Okay, so my boyfriend and I are trying to do a handful of fun activities to do over spring and summer break. One of them includes skydiving. I am terrified of this mainly because I am a very paranoid person and I'm afraid of really huge heights.

However, I should have the ability to conquer my fears. So, despite that I haven't announced to him that I want to do this (he'll find out about it on Valentines day) it would mostly be the two of us and a friend of ours who is as crazy as the both of us.

My question:

Has anyone skydived before that could give me any kind of relief and give me their experiences? I know that I can check this online on some skydiving's site, but I'd like to know from someone's personal experience on how it all went and how it was to them.

As well as if anyone else wants to know too that might give it a try.

I went Skydiving during a Spring Break back in college. Was pretty wicked.
Unless you take classes or meet whatever certifications are necessary you'll have to go tandem with you harnessed to a jump master/instructor. It really wasn't that scary but heights have never really bothered me. The sensation itself is difficult to describe but the freefall feels like floating in water with you not really gauging just how quickly you're falling. The gliding part is pretty relaxed and your free to look around at the scenery which is pretty cool. Landing takes some finesse but the jump master will be the one doing that as well so you dont have to worry about injury or messing it up. Your instructor will be the one pulling the cord to stop the freefall, guiding the parachute while gliding, and then sticking the landing.

Seems like you had a blast. I think I'd go only once and never do it again.

Does it go pretty quickly? What I've read, you're only free falling for sixty seconds, and then for three-five minutes, it's all gliding in the air.

It seems really cool and I'm sure it's worth the hundred bucks you put down.

I went with my brother and his friend last Summer, and it was definitely an experience you won't regret. I wouldn't worry about the heights aspect of it, honestly, it didn't even play a factor for me. I don't like heights when I don't feel secure(not a fan of standing on edges of building tops etc.), but I do like roller coasters. When I say it wasn't a factor, it's because it just doesn't even seem real. You go up in a small personal sized plane, that fits maybe 4 people, and you can't even really see much other than clouds once you get up there(we jumped tandem from 10,000 feet). It honestly felt like you were in a car, then once they open up the door...that's when it gets real. lol But it's nothing to worry about. They know what they are doing, and as long as you do as they say, everything will be fine and safe. I wouldn't worry about it. Like with anything, the less you worry and the more you relax and stay calm, and have confidence in your safety, facing your fears, the more you will enjoy it and feel proud of yourself for being able to experience such a unique thing in life. Something most people only see in movies or games etc. You actually are doing it, and that's quite the feeling. You'll be riding that natural high for the next couple of days.

It's really quite awesome. I would love to again someday.

And to answer your last question, the free fall is around 60 seconds, from 10,000 feet. You free fall 'til about 5,000 ft., then you/instructor pulls the shute. Then you glide down, and they let you grab the handles and practice some spins and flares. The gliding lasts about 4-5 minutes it felt like.

Me too! I'm always afraid that I'm going to fall even when I know that if I just stand still I won't fall. Lol, it's kinda hard to explain. You know, you know but still, no just no... lol

I basically have to get over this paranoid feeling, and I'm sure I can be easily talked out of being paranoid by the people that want to do this with me. (Mainly the boy) And yeah, always doing what the professionals say will always lead to safety.

I also read up about how long it takes and the site that I looked at said the same thing. Sixty seconds of free falling, then three-six minutes of gliding. Which is fine with me, I'd probably just have my eyes closed from time to time, although that would obviously ruin the fun.

However, it's a shame that I can't bring my own camera on the flight, at least that's what the site said. I would totally like to show off that I did this, but it'll probably happen either during Spring break or summer vacation.

Yeap, and I'll be screaming despite that I lost my ability to scream. (Yes, I literally cannot scream)

That's why I refuse to go onto anything that has me looking down on what I'm standing. AKA, glass floors and such.

I have the feeling that I might fall through, and that's something I don't want to do.

Not sure if you are doing tandem or what, but there's just this awesome feeling you get after you've lived from jumping out of an airplane from 10,000 ft. It's a lot higher than it sounds, everything is just lines and you won't even be able to see people. Buildings look like little miniatures. But the satisfaction and awesome rush you get, by being able to say "yeah, I just jumped out of an airplane from 10,000 ft." is unlike anything else.

When you see it done in the movies, you can always say "yeah, I did that". heh

You'll be proud of yourself. Getting the most out of life.

I'm not sure what we're doing just yet, I haven't really gotten around telling my boyfriend and his friend that I'm interested in getting a fear out of the way by tagging along. (I'm kinda gonna reveal that during Valentine's Day)

I really hope I get the ability to capture everything I see with a camera, but I saw that you're not allowed to bring it with you. Which is a shame, because the way you describe how everything looks like would be an awesome picture to snap.

Although, the rush might be awesome to feel! I is ready for this... I hope.
