A bit vague but, I'll shotgun it. Ok, first you can't say the Lockon Technology, because by an interview in Gamepro, the creator said that Knuckles was slated for the original Sonic 2 (Sonic 2 was going to be sonic2+half of three), and So instead of deleting the coding (They didn't know how to compress enough at the time to include knuckles), they left the coding pieces in for Lock-On tech. That's howcome when you plug in Knuckles you can play as him. Sonic3 had a game save system which wasn't featured in the first two, and an extremely difficult cheat code. That was corrected in S&K by having it lock onto S3 which also allowed continuation of the 'story'.
