Mr. Jackson enslaved Nena, he forced her to stay against her will, and he beat her. Somehow he still found the kindness in his heart to pay her $300 a year for her troubles.
So maybe Mr. Jackson can claim legal ignorance

Of course, some(see below) must think the courts are being too hard on him, after all poor people don't deserve help out of poverty
