- Rogue One Is the First Star Wars Stand-Alone Film, Rian Johnson to Write and Direct Star Wars: Episode VIII

Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

First spin-off movie confirmed~!

- Ben Mendelsohn Named as Potential “Star Wars: Rogue One” Lead

As recently released Netflix series “Bloodline” enjoys a wave of positive buzz, one of its lead actors has been attached to a very high-profile upcoming film: Deadline published an unconfirmed report Wednesday that Ben Mendelsohn is “circling” a lead role in “Rogue One,” the upcoming “Star Wars” standalone spinoff film to be directed by Garth Edwards of “Godzilla” fame.

There’s no further details on the nature of Mendelsohn’s potential role. Thus far, the only official casting in the film is Felicity Jones, confirmed earlier this month as one of the film’s leads.

- ‘Star Wars: Rogue One': Diego Luna Joins Felicity Jones in Lead Role (EXCLUSIVE)

Director Gareth Edwards has found another rebel fighter to battle the Empire in “Star Wars: Rogue One.” Sources tell Variety that Diego Luna is in talks for a lead role alongside Felicity Jones and Riz Ahmed, with Ben Mendelsohn set to star as the film’s primary villain.

Disney and Lucasfilm had no comment on the casting.

At a panel with Edwards and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy at the recent Star Wars Celebration convention in Anaheim, Edwards revealed that the plot of “Rogue One” revolves around the heist of the Death Star plans by a group of rebel fighters, with Jones starring as one of the rebel soldiers. Sources say Ahmed and Luna also play rebel fighters.

The film will take place between Episode III and Episode IV, but closer chronologically to “A New Hope.” It’s set to bow December 16, 2016.

Of all the places to start with a spin-off film, that is not the most interesting.

- Stormtroopers Arrive on ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Set

The first photos have trickled out of the set of “Star Wars: Rogue One,” the 2016 anthology film directed by “Godzilla’s” Gareth Edwards.

Aerial shots taken at London’s Elstree Studios, and published over the weekend by the Mirror, reveal stormtroopers gathered at the ramp to a ship on a set for what appears to be a desert oasis or perhaps a beach. The images aren’t exactly earth-shattering — none of the stars is shown — but they are the first look at the standalone film.

Felicity Jones is the only actor officially announced for “Rogue One,” which focuses on a band of resistance fighters who set out on a daring missions to steal the Death Star plans from the Empire (just before the events of “Star Wars: A New Hope”). However, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker and Jonathan Aris have been rumored for roles.

“Star Wars: Rogue One” opens Dec. 16, 2016.

- 'Star Wars: Rogue One' Cast Revealed, First Photo Released

Lucasfilm announced the castmembers and crew who will make up Star Wars standalone Rogue One on Saturday, accompanied by the film's first cast photo.

The Gareth Edwards-directed film focuses on resistance fighters who unite to steal plans to Death Star.

Castmembers include Oscar-nominated Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.

"Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe," producer Kathleen Kennedy said in a release. "It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know."

The Donnie Yen rumors were true! Interest rising!

- Rogue One star Donnie Yen shows new stormtrooper helmets

Today, Yen surprised fans with an enigmatic tease of the trophies he may be collecting.

The helmet in the middle is familiar enough to anyone who’s ever seen the original Star Wars trilogy, but the two on either side are unique designs, even as they incorporate elements that make them unmistakable Empire chic.

So what do these helmets represent? Lucasfilm sources did not immediately reply to EW’s request for further explanation. The only information Yen shared was this statement that accompanied the photo on his Facebook page: “I am the force and I fear nothing... Going to put this in my company’s display room.”

Donnie Yen hunting Stormtroopers? Uhhh... That sounds fucking awesome.

- Dracula legend back from the grave - for Star Wars prequel: Peter Cushing is set to be digitally recreated in new spin-off Rogue One

As the grim-faced star of countless horror films including Dracula and Dr Frankenstein, Peter Cushing raised life from beyond the grave.

But now the gravel-voiced British actor, who died in 1994, will be raised from the dead himself.

Cushing, star of many Hammer House of Horror movies, will be digitally recreated in the new Star Wars spin-off Rogue One, which is being filmed at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire and is due to be released late next year.

In the original 1977 Star Wars, Cushing played evil Grand Moff Tarkin, commander of the Death Star and 'boss' of Darth Vader.

In the new film Cushing, who died of prostate cancer aged 81, will be painstakingly brought back to life using the latest Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) techniques.

Pretty interesting. More about the process in the article. Given the time line of the movie, it makes sense. Kinda cool.

- Loose Lips Sink Death Stars: ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Character Details, Trailer Rumors, and More

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
Mads Mikkelsen (Galen appears to be his name in the film) is kind of the key to the film in a way. He is a scientist that took over the Geonosian Death Star project. He solved several of the flaws the Empire could not and is sort of a revered person in the Empire for his contributions. However, Mikkelsen’s character is a Robert Oppenheimer-type character. Oppenheimer helped design the atomic bomb only to say, “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” The guilt “Galen” feels for his contributions to the Empire become too much and he defects, attempting to make things right. In order to do this, he enlists the help of his only daughter....

Lots more in the article, but this piece is particularly interesting.

The most exciting thing I've heard about the movie so far is simply the fact that they're acknowledging Attack of the Clones.

I'm curious if this will have any impact on Rebels. Even if the film (likely) has no real references to it, this would be the event Rebels builds towards. Sort of like a bridge between that and ANH

I doubt it's gonna happen, but I'd be stoked if there was some reference to Kyle Katarn in this in some way, considering he was responsible for stealing the plans in Legends.

- ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Official Teaser Trailer [YouTube]

The much talked about first teaser trailer. Come and get it, ya lousy nerfherders!

I'm really digging the composition of some of the shots they show.

I like the idea of positioning this film on the ground, in the trenches, beneath stomping AT-ATs and what have you. A modern war film type of perspective the classic trilogy never quite managed.

I also quite like some of the new character designs. Donnie Yen's little bit has me excited to see more of him. He doesn't quite look the way I imagined, so that's interesting.

The stuff that excites me the most is the stuff I don't recognize.

That Mon Mothma is eerie, though.

- ‘Star Wars’ Veteran Jimmy Smits Confirms ‘Rogue One’ Cameo

Three weeks after eagle-eyed fans spotted what appeared to be Jimmy Smits in behind-the-scenes footage from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the actor has confirmed that, yes, he reprises his role as Bail Organa in the upcoming film.

“People got nothing better to do –?” he joked on CBS’s “The Talk.” “There’s stuff going on in the world!” However, after briefly feigning ignorance, Smits conceded he has a minor role in the Gareth Edwards film. “Can you say the word ‘cameo’?” he said, adding with a laugh, “Can you say the words ‘small part’?” Smits then pushed for a change of subject.

Jimmy Smits is gonna Organa-ize your world. Yeah, man.

Bail being in is exciting. So far the most exciting things about this film for me is related to the fact that they're actually acknowledging the prequels unlike The Force Awakens (aside from a clones reference). Which is ironic considering how much this movie is playing off of OT nostalgia. Still wish for a Palpatine cameo, though.

I'm hoping it resurrects a few more elements of the original EU. Disney is slowly loosening up about that, in particular with Rebels. I'm not betting on anything grand, but just a small nod here or there.
