Over at Blood-Sports.net we are currently in the process of conducting research for a new featured article we will be publishing titled "The 10 Most Influential Fighting Games of all Time". These are the 10 fighting games that absolutely stand out as leaders in the genre, ones that introduced original concepts that are still being used even today. They can come from any year, be on any platform, and be by any developer.
As part of our research for this article I'd like to ask you guys who frequent this site for your input. In your opinion, what are the 10 most influential fighting games of all time? You can list up to 10, but make sure you order them and give reasons as to why you think they should make it onto this list.
I would really appreciate the help guys :)
Thanks in advance!

Well, I guess Soul Calibur, MK, Street Fighter, KIller Instinct, Tekken, Virtua Fighter and some others will be in there.
Those are the ones I'd put forward, Virtua Fighter being the only one I'm not familiar with from the list.

I can't say 10 but I it would be definity Resident Evil. This game created the Horror game genre.
Super Mario Brothers for the Jump N Run genre and Final Fantasy for the RPG genre.

FIGHTING GAMES dude!
Also when you say a game, be more specific. If for example you say MK, specify WHICH MK it is.

Oh sorry I have bad eyes
1. Street Fighter (because it was the first fighting game and made this genre successful)
2. MK1 and MK2 (because of its deeper storylines and created the "bloody" fighting games
3. Tekken 1/virtual Fighter 1 (the first 3D fighting games and realistic fighting styles)

(In no particular order, yet)
Street Fighter II: CE (it started the really good SFIIs, and those generated thousands of rip offs); Mortal Kombat II (because it generated alot of merchandise and hype); Tekken 3 (it just sold great and it was great, great fun. Everybody I know loves it); Mortal Kombat (because of all the controversy); X-men vs. Street Fighter (I think it was the first cross over, and it was the first step into building a large series of insane, awesome fun)
I think naming more than five would be too many.

There are three rules for doing scientific research. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.

1. Street Fighter 2 (easy choice)
2. Mortal Kombat (also easy, but SF gets the top bill)
3. Art of Fighting
4. Samurai Showdown
5. The King of Fighters
6. Tekken
7. Soul Calibur
8. Street Fighter vs X-Men
9. Guilty Gear
10. Virtua Fighter

5. The King of Fighters
6. Tekken
7. Soul Calibur
8. Street Fighter vs X-Men
9. Guilty Gear
10. Virtua Fighter
ok, I've decided to make a ten list afterall.
(from least influential to most)
10- Soul Calibur (Great fighting system and all, but not very influential because it's so recent and hasn't spawned many rip offs -yet)
9- Tekken (with it, began one of the best series of fighting games ever- to some people anyway. Not a big fan myself)
8- Street Fighter II (First SFII ever- nuff said)
7- X-men vs Street Fighter (already talked about it)
6- One Must Fall (Fucking sweet game. So simple, but so great. It's hard to desribe why it's so good, you gotta try it.)
5- Mortal Kombat II (already talked about it)
4- Mortal Kombat (same as above)
3- Tekken 3 (same...)
2- Street Fighter II CE (same...)
And the single most influential fighting game ever...
1- Street Fighter. That's right. Crappy fighting system. Only one character to fight as (not counting Ken for P2). But without Street Fighter, there would've been no Final Fight, no Street Fighter II, and without both of those games, IMO, there wouldn't have been no Streets of Rage, no Golden Axe, no Mortal Kombat and no KOF (and other SNK fighters).

Street Fighter II - The first overall brilliant fighting game. Awesome characters, fun to play and the first of its kind.
Mortal Kombat - Created the violence in games. There was so much controversy surrounding it (but like they say, all press is good press) but it was still a brillaint game. Great characters, revolutionary graphics and great gameplay.
Killer instinct - Perfected the combo system in fighting games (im not a big fan though)
Tekken 3 - Still IMO the best ever fighting game. Great graphics and amazing to play
Dead or Alive - (I believe it) Created the concept of interactive arenas. In Dead or Alive 2/3, you can knock your opponent through walls onto lower levels which was new a new concept at the time of release. Damn good game as well, nearly as good as Tekken 3 but with worse characters
Mortal Kombat 4 - Although controversial as to whether its any good or not, it made the transition from 2D to 3D for a major video game series. If the MK team had not been brave and released MK4, we could still be playing MK in 2D (like the recent Street Fighter games), but some people may like this. I think it is better that it is 3D because 2D WILL be phazed out soon. Thats why I think MK4 was very important (I also thought it was a good game!)
There. My 2 cents. They're in no order by the way
