Dunno if you guys got it in Aussie, but the NZ idol was fucked. The voting system got so abused that it really didn't matter who won in the end, and although there was only one winner, about 8 of them tour the country doing weak tours for 9 year olds.
The whole thing is rooted.

In the US, all 12 finalists tour the country after the competition ends.

Can somebody point out to me the purpose of having a winner then?
Is it just to cover their asses and make it look like a real competition, so that people don't realise it's a giant advertising ploy?

Basically the final 2 get a record deal right away. It's guaranteed. The others get a contract IF companies are interested in them and think they have potential, which I would say is the point of the tour, to get record executives to notice the other 10.

In the UK after Pop Idol has finished all the 12 finalists go on a tour than half of them get record deals doesn't matter who wins because you'll end up making money from it anyway.
