The state of retro gaming - VGA graded games?!

My brother recently moved out and left me his entertainment center, which gives me more room to hook up some of my older consoles. Systems that I don't play as much, I had unhooked them to make room for my more recent systems. In looking for some newer cables and games for these systems, I came across VGA graded games. Just like comic book, they are now selling graded sealed video games on auction sites for hundreds of dollars?!?!
I mean seriously, retro games and parts are hard enough to come by as it is. Now people feel the need to have their sealed games rated, so they can charge 10x fold for these games?! Games are meant to be played as it is. I know some gamers do like to collect these games (particular the rarer ones), but is there really a need to do it to more ordinary titles? Gamers are so concerned about where the industry is headed with the PS4 and Xbox One as it is, but it looks like retro game isn't fairing much better.
1st party developers, and publishers are so concerned pirated games, and emulators, but they are making it harder on gamers to get what they need as it is.
Sorry for the rant, but I had to vent, so what's your take on this?

I think it's perfectly valid to get collectible items appraised.

Most gamers are looking for these games to play, not to just sit on a shelf sealed. I can understand wanting have proof that the game is new and factory sealed. A good number auctions for retro titles are misleading or counter fit shrink wrapped. But I still don't see the need to go and have a title like Super Mario World for the GBA graded and sealed so you can charge a few hundred dollars vs maybe $85-$100. I mean they're titles like Super Mario Land for the original Gameboy that are sealed and going for $700+. That is just outrageous IMO. I know its a hard title to find and if the game wasn't graded the seller could probably get $200-$300. Is there really a need to go and jack the price of these games up that high? That's all I'm saying.
It just reminds me of scalpers, who go out and buy up new consoles on launch day, so as to sell them on ebay for higher prices because of the low stock. its just for profit.
[edit]: Not to mention that a lot of these titles are available on newer consoles as digital downloads, which i thought would have kept prices in line.
