The tournament/online scene for fighting games
I have read a lot of things about the tournament/online scene of the fighting genre that sound rather...unsavory. I always try to remain objective and not sound ignorant, so if any of the things I'm about to say are wrong, feel free to correct me.
The tournament/online fighting scene seems to have a lot of ridiculous rules. In MK9's case, for instance (and probably MKVDCU's too), fatalities are looked down upon, because they take too long and a lot of players are just pathetically impatient, boringly practical and want to move on to the next fight ASAP.
I've heard that taunts in Super Smash Bros: Brawl aren't allowed, on account that they're insulting. If that's true, then it's laughable. Losers should just take their loss instead of asking for potentially insincere modesty on the winners' part.
The ban of console exclusive characters. I believe it has something to do with say, XB360 players of MK9 not being familiar with Kratos, thus struggling against him online and giving PS3 owners playing as him an unfair advantage. If that's true, then can't they just watch vids of Kratos in action on youtube, familiarizing themselves with the character's moves, combos etc? It's not like he's Shao Kahn, gameplay-wise.
The three examples I've cited are things I've read online, the first one right on these very boards. But since I try to avoid jumping to conclusions, I welcome anyone that is part of the tournament/online fighting scene to clarify things. Provided that I was wrong about anything at all, of course.

While its fun to watch fatalities once in a while, seeing them over and over again gets boring and consumes a lot of time.

I've never heard of this rule when I played Brawl. Even then why would you taunt in the middle of a match? It leaves you wide open

No they can't. There's a difference between watching someone play as Kratos and playing against Kratos. It would be unfair for an Xbox player to go up against an unfamiliar character.
Hope this helped

1) The thing about time is something I have a problem with. Do players always have something important to do offline that makes fatalities a waste of their precious time, or do they just want to to move to the next fight? Because in the latter's case, waiting a bit isn't the end of the world. And as for the boredom you mention, I believe players could consider it a consequence of losing. There's no reason victorious players can't celebrate by finishing off the opposition if that's what they want. The losers have after all, lost.
2) In my case, I taunt after eliminating opponents, or when they're about to fall off-stage because of me. Taunts are fun and add flavor to a match. As for the risk factor, I try to time them right. Besides, risks are fun.
3) Unless losing online has worse conquequences than bruising one's ego, XB360 players could learn from their losses to Kratos so that next time, they're better prepared, if seeing him in action wasn't enough. I realize that the tournament scene is a little different however, and that money may be at stakes, so unfamiliar characters could then provide an unfair advantage thus are better banned.
Still, it highlights something about the online/tournament scene that I dislike, and it's the boring practicality. Fighting an unfamiliar character to me sounds entertaining, but no, lot of people online just want to win. And win. And win some more. And they are willing to spam moves, and stick to the exact same strategy forever, and ever, and ever. Just to win. No trying different tactics, no experimenting with different characters, no variety of any kind. Yawn.
But again, I'm giving tournament/online players a chance to express their opinion. Your reply was mature, SubMan. Just thought I'd give credit where it was due.

I think you're kinda missing the point here. Fatalities aren't frowned upon so much because they take up valuable time, although that is part of it when u are playing back to back games (the loser will want to redeem themselves ASAP most times). they are just annoying to see over and over again. I play MK online a lot and seeing Scorpions fatality practically gives me a headache now. I have literally seen certain fatalities hundreds and hundreds, maybe even thousands of times.
Combine this with the fact that the online MK community is rotten as fuck and filled to the brim with immature douche bags. At LEAST half of the games i lose I have to sit there and watch some asshole's little victory dance or teabaggin session BEFORE they even launch into the fatality i have seen hundreds of times, which is then often followed my sore winner hate mail. I'm a grown man and never take games seriously, nor am I quick tempered or impatient in my real life, but after awhile that shit makes me wanna put my fist through my T.V.
Further combine this with potentially laggy games. For instance picture yourself losing to someone you KNOW you can beat, someone who is literally doing the exact same things over and over but lag prevents you from countering or escaping, then it doesn't even matter if they teabag or not the fatality alone is pretty fuckin aggravating because it was not earned whatsoever. Now repeat this cycle like 5 times in a row adding the additional few minutes it often takes to even find a game in the first place. It is easy to get impatient with fatalities.
That said, even if I played one of my friends and they kept beating me simply because they were better, if they fatalitied me every SINGLE time I would tire of it much faster than i would if we just went to the next game. While a fatality isn't as annoying as tea bagging, it still never feels good to lose, especially multiple times in a row, and watching a fatality every time starts to feel like a slap in the face after multiple games.
And that's my rant on that.

1. Fatalities are boring to some, and they don't really contribute to the gameplay which is what tournament players like about the game. Also having seen them a million of times does not help.
2. Never heard of that, probably false.
3. Losing to a character because of unfair advantage should never happen in the first place. You don't learn the game by watching, but by playing and practicing. Watching only gives you an idea of what to try to do in the game. If you can't practice against a character, you can't learn the matchup which gives the other player an advantage even if the character is trash.

Exactly what the other people have said.
(I) don't do fatalities for the point that i've seen them a LOT. Sure, it's fun to see them a few times, but after awhile.. Maaan. lol.
They are looked down upon because like @Spaceman said, the online MK community is really SHITTY. I went on ranked, 2 matches in both of them ragequit. I can't even imagine why people still bother with online for certain games. I've been playing offline, and it has made me a much better player. EVEN against the AI! The AI barely jumps and when it does it helps me practice anti-airs, punishes, etc. It's a lot better then online.
I have to say that the only thing I really go for online is babalities. Even though when I do one, obviously they ragequit lol. I mostly play with my clan members who are respectable MK players, and therefore we mostly just do the no blood code in the first place.
I'm pretty much saying that for just MK.
