The upcoming "Missing" TV series starring Ashley Judd is guilty of perpetutating one huge cliche I'm absolutely tired of:

Whenever a tough gal in a story is given a caring side, most of the time it is toward kids. Dreadful, snotty kids.

Why is it that strong female leads, if they have to have someone in their life, can't be given a hot, smart boyfriend more often? Or a girlfriend also possessing those qualities? The movie "Aliens" missed quite a huge opportunity by not making Hicks, played by Michael Biehn, a love interest for Ripley. He was gorgeous back then. But no, Ripley is a woman, and even when a woman is tough enough to give Rambo a run for his money, she's still meant for motherhood.

The jackass who made the Silent Hill movie made the protagonist a woman, not in order to defy stereotypes including the one I'm talking about, but to perpetuate them, as Harry Mason from the first game was too "feminine" to his liking. I so wanted to kill him when I read that. Yeah, men should just be insecure, narrow-minded macho morons, because that's what being a man's all about, baby!

In plenty of the occasional instances when strong women are actually given boyfriends, the guys turn out to be horribly...plain. Plain looks, plain personality, plain everything. Not that leading men are never given boring girlfriends, I've seen that plenty of time too, but leading women seem to have it worse.

I enjoy strong women who would do anything for their boyfriends. If something traumatizing happened to me, such as rape, I'd love to have a girlfriend that would want to find whoever was responsible and murder him/her/them in the slowest and most excrutiatingly painful way imaginable. But machos, who sadly make up far too much of a male audience, would find this kind of women threatening. How pathetic.

This is it for now. Feel free to share your opinion on the matter.

There's Xena, warrior princess, who imo is the toughest woman ever on television. She did most of her intense fighting not for her kids, but for her girlfriend Gabrielle.

And there's Buffy. She didn't have any kids, but she fought mostly for her friends.

Maybe this isn't quite related to the topic, but it's still about the depiction of women, so posting a seperate thread might be excessive. So..

The women in a commercial I saw for "The bachelor" seem frighteningly pathetic. They disgust me. They seem like dumb, weeping messes. Just the way machos love them.

I'm not condemning vulnerabilty, or kindness, in women. Women can still have these and have strenght of character, and intelligence. Samus Aran from the Metroid series is one example.

However, I also hate the kind of "tough" gals Michelle Rodriguez frequently plays in her movies. They seem hopelessly insecure, like they're constantly saying "Look at me, I'm a badass! Didn't I tell you I was a badass? Oh, and just so you know, I'm a badass! Don't you forget it! Got that?!". That's not tough in my mind, that's pathetic. Such women tend to be misandrists, always a chip on their shoulder, permanently trying to dominate men. Battle of the sexes this, battle of the sexes that. How about gender equality? Nah, far too difficult and complex a concept for feminazis and machos alike to ever hope to grasp.

Just thought I'd share that.

I agree about the chip on the shoulder thing. Some female characters just seem to have some snobby, self-righteousan attitude problem. All men are scum... until their partner shows up, then it's just the bad guy. They try too hard to break from stereotypes only to create a ridiculous extreme.

A couple females I've seen fit this at times are Olivia Benson from SVU & Elle from Criminal Minds.

It's been societal tradition that Men are the protectors, and Women are the caregivers. Too weak looking after the kids or doing laundry/dishes to know how to fight. Manly men fear men will steal their women or they are insecure & think their woman will cheat on them with a manlier man. When a woman goes off on a thing, she needs some kind of motivation like kids or "justice" because a woman can't be shown to have the same "undesirable" motives men have.

My ideal woman would know how to take care of herself, because I can't be there every second of every day, and you know, chicks hate when you don't leave them be. They hate when their men hover & babysit them.

I'm looking for my equal, which is why I'm attracted to Tira from SoulCalibur, and Sam Puckett from iCarly. Though Tira is an extreme, worst case scenario, and my attraction to Sam is somewhat narcisistic as I swear she's based on me as a person.

To be fair, I've seen a lot of movies about macho men who love kids and fight for kids as well. There are many movies about men/fathers who go to the ends of the earth for their children or someone else's.

I think it's not necessarily the women=caregivers aspect of it, but more of the heroes= protectors of the innocent and those incapable of taking care of themselves (namely children). No one would like a movie character who feeds children to hungry aliens or velicoraptors, but the majority of people would like a character who rescues a child.

Usually, the reason children are introduced into such movies (like Aliens, Jurassic Park) is to up the emotional ante of the film. Would Jurassic Park have the same impact if children weren't in peril? Let's face it, nobody was sad when the lawyer was eaten right off the toilet. Some people thought it was funny. But when poor Timmy got shocked by the electric fence, you could hear a pin drop in that theater.

lol people

I remember people looked & turned around when I laughed at some guy getting either stepped on or eaten, when we saw the 1998 Godzilla film, back in high school. Silly Humans, it's just a movie, it ain't real. Stop hiding from the real world, shiz happens.

The lead woman's man is plain so as not to outshine her, as she's the focus.
Too many TV cliches n stereotypes. Woman can't be strong without some "reason" for it.

La Femme Nikita(the original, not the oversexualized remake) has her strong points, but overall is an example of slavery. From ancient kunoichi to CIA/KGB operatives, the way you treat your women is horrendous. Tools n eye candy.

Caring for children is preprogrammed genetical behaviour.

Besides, if I want a credible tough woman on tv, I watch Sigourney Weaver. Axes the hell out of any contemporary actress.
