So my girlfriend and bought this yesterday and have been playing it all day lol. This is mega nostalgic fun.
I see thought that the online reportedly has a lot of problems. However David Jaffe himself is addressing the issues, and they are being worked on (take notes Mr. Boon).
So now a general Twisted Metal Thread. Talk characters, cars, tactics, and more;

After reading through the strategy guide and watching a few videos on Youtube, it's safe to say that I'll be borrowing this game from a friend or someone rather than actually buying it myself.
There's a lot of problems I have a hard time accepting. This isn't Twisted Metal, hasn't been for a very long time and I am very disappointed in where the direction the series went after it debuted on the Playstation 2. I HATED Black for various reasons... It's not the goofy, insane, cartoon-like characters that Twisted Metal 1 and 2 were like. Head-On was the only other game that actually did it right.
When E3 announced this game's return for the PS3 I was ecstatic... Up until they showed us the new changes and I was not happy with that.
The constant inconsistencies they have with their characters made me more furious about this game than before. Krista Sparks was never a model, she was Calypso's damn daughter for heaven's sake!
Playing as only three characters in the series blew my mind out of proportion. Why reduce the characters and allow them to drive other cars that the series had?
Like I said, this isn't Twisted Metal... it's just some butchered game that has the title "Twisted Metal" on it... Fuck.

I liked it.
Replay value is low. Once I beat it (which was in a day) there wasn't much to do.
In terms of gameplay, it's great. Very fun and exciting. Every car is different and plays different.
In terms of story, I enjoyed it. It was pretty short but I enjoyed it for what it was. I liked how they kept it dark. I love the gritty side of TM. I'm also glad to see Calypso has gone back to being a dick again.
Overall, I would only rent it to play it. Not a buy from me. But I did have a great, fun, very nostalgic time playing.

If you bought Twisted Metal for the storyline, your a moron anyway.
I was a bit put off by the only 3 characters, until I played the game. It works and it's done pretty well. TM is about Rock and Roll, Cars, and destruction. Thats why you buy it, and thats what it delivers.

I think I would have felt more insulted if you would have used the proper "you're." Not sure exactly how anyone would be considered a moron if they liked Twisted Metal's story... Whether or not they've been consistent. Although, I am not ashamed at all to enjoy Twisted Metal's story... even though it's inconsistent... I just didn't like the direction at all where the series went since Black.

There's actually one huge thing I've noticed in the stories that isn't ever really said. The worlds are coming apart.
So a while back, someone told me that every TM game occurs in its own universe, and that's true to a point, each game has it's own little flavor around it that makes it more unique.
For Example, in TM1 the game is kind of the standard world (as standard as TM can be anyways). Sweet Tooth wasn't flaming, and the characters weren't screwed over as much as they would in later games (I think only Spectre and Outlaw were screwed). Calypso's face is heavily burnt and his hair is rather frizzy
In TM2, the world is a bit more colorful and alive, there are a lot more bright colors in the palette, Sweet Tooth is flaming, Mike and Stu want to get high, it's just more vibrant. Calypso has sleeker hair, a nice suit, and his face is only scarred, but not burnt.
TM3 and 4 will be ignored because they tried to emulate TM2's colorful world, which is part of why I don't like them.
TMB was stated to all be Sweet Tooth's view of the world, as a dark sadistic place, perfect for him. Calypso is bald, wears some jacket without a shirt, his chest is heavily scarred, or burnt, and his eye is sunken in.
In TMHO, it's implied that Calypso's meddling with the world in his competition is starting to fray reality, Calypso looks like a combination of his TM2 look and his Black look, he's balding, and his eye is sunken in. The characters are slightly more serious than in TM2, It seems like different perceptions are merging in to one world.
Now on the PS2 port of HO, there was TMLost, now while that was just the remnants of the cancelled Harbor City, and the canon is debatable, Manslaughter's bio states that he was sent by a more colorful Calypso (probably TM2's) to destroy this Calypso for whatever reason. If this is canon, it would mean that the different Calypsos know about each other and are trying to become the only Calypso by defeating the others (kind of like that movie The One with Jet Li). And it would possibly explain HO, as the Calypsos have started to merge.
Lastly, there's TM2012 (yes 2012, I'd recommend a title change, but I won't complain about it). In this, Calypso has no visible scars, his eyes aren't sunken in, and his hair is similar to what it was in TM2. This Calypso keeps trophies in his office that represent the different winnings of different characters of different universes, including some non-TM games (Kratos' Blades from GoW for example). He even has the cases for TM1, 2, and War of the Monsters. Basically, this Calypso seems like the strongest one so far, he can go in to any of the other universes (including one more similar to our own) and take things to put on display.

I always maintained that Twisted Metal is the delusions of Marcus Kane the crazy homeless man from TM2.
I think Marcus Kane is a bum that hangs out in a car junkyard and has schiztophrenia. Sweet Tooth is who he is in his mind, and Twisted Metal is in his head. Each game is a different re-imaging of his recurring nightmare.
Regarding your and you're, because I see this all the time; I would hope context clues help you discover the true meaning of how I meant to use the word. Furthermore, it's only a typo. I often type words out of muscle memory because I am usually playing a bass and that is how my hands operate. If I was writing a collegiate prose I would slow down and make sure it was corrected, however this is Monday on a Video game forum. What I was saying was easily understandable. Can I enjoy a thread without my spelling and grammar under a microscope now? PLEASE?

Jironobou, your explanation is amazing. If that really was the games' actual canon that would make one hell of a story.

I've heard about Twisted Metal for awhile now but I've never actually played any game from the series *gasp*.... haha...anyway, would this be a good game to start with??

Yeah it would be. As has already been pointed out, the game doesn't follow a cohesive storyline. You won't be missing anything.
A lot of reviews I read on it say that the controls are a bit difficult, however my girlfriend didn't start gaming until about 6months ago, and this was her introduction to vehicular combat.
I bring her up because she also has Dysgraphia: a transcription disability, meaning that it is a writing disorder associated with impaired handwriting, orthographic coding (orthography, the storing process of written words and processing the letters in those words), and finger sequencing (the movement of muscles required to write). It's the last bit that applies to gaming. Finger Sequencing. Her hands also become easily fatigued.
Yet she is able to handle Twisted Metal just fine. So I can only assume that those reviewers find anything more difficult than an FPS to be awkward control scheme.
We have been playing the Co-op mode on Normal difficulty and not really having much trouble up through chapter 2/3.
So the game is fun, easy, and not too deep. I'd say pick it up.

To be honest, to get a better grasp of the game, why not you just start from the very beginning?

It is expensive and completely unecessary to enjoy TW2012. However I will say that owning any game in the TM franchise is worth whatever it costs in PSN store or at local playNtrade. They were all quality games. Though TM4 was a little goofy artistically for me. I like the grittier games. On a side note Vigilante 8 on N64, PS1, and PC is also a nice vehicular combat game.

Did the game get easier on Normal? I haven't had my ass handed to me nearly as much as when I first got it and started playing Challenge.
Also: I'm loving Axel and its high jump.

I don't know if Normal mode is just super easy, but the GF and I got golds on all of Grimms stuff and most of sweet tooths.

I knew I'd gotten my storyline idea from somewhere, and it is indeed the storyline.
Minion load screens in BLACK:
At the load screen for each level while playing as Minion, there are a series of numbers instead of words alike with the other characters. These numbers can be translated into words. The formula used is 1=A, 2=B, 3=C, etc. Here are the messages you get after translating the numbers:
1. I do not think this is real.
2. I must speak in code or he will discover me.
3. We are trapped in his head.
4. This is how he sees the world, how Sweet Tooth sees his life, it is not real.
5. All of us are trapped in his head.
6. I miss the old colorful world.
7. We will return to old world one day.
8. In the real world my name is Marcus Kane.

that reminded me of another bit of speculated backstory.
Marcus says that TMB occured in the mind of Sweet Tooth (aka Marcus' other identity) The fact the his vehicle was named Minion (which could be considered a slave to a higher power) infers that Marcus is a slave to his other identity, and has been locked away there for some time. When you consider his psychotic "reformation" mentioned in 2012, it might put some more perspective into him
NOTE: I feel like I should still mention that his dual personality was hinted at in 2012 as well, but not to such a degree of inept straw grabbing.

I haven't played in a while, but when I did I preferred Outlaw and Junkyard Dog, but Reaper was my 3rd.

Sticking with Axel for now. EDIT:I didn't know Twisted Metal's online site has a customizer you can use for user created downloadable skins..haven't seen anything spectacular so far besides classic versions of sweet tooth and a Mystery Machine skin for Vermin. DOUBLE EDIT: wait nevermind there's a shit ton more skins than I thought there were...

So after playing Campaign on Hard and having a very frustrating couple hours against the last boss I realize this...
There ain't no goddamn way I'm unlocking Warthog.

According to the guys at TMA, the AI gets very cheaty on Twisted.
But I don't know if it's worth it, Warthog has stronger armor than Darkside, but his specials are essentially Axel's, except his shockwave only goes forward, and he charges his weapons by leaning the entire vehicle back, exposing a weak spot on his belly.
Damnit, I want to play this again... Thanks guys.
