Most fighting games will have unlockable characters. I find that unlocking characters is much more rewarding. But there are some games where 95% of the roster are available right from the start. Games like Tekken 6, MK9, and MVC3. Its convenient to have a large portion of the roster available but I feel that having all characters right away isn't as much fun as unlocking them. The best game for unlocking characters in my opinion is Super Smash Bros. Not only do you unlock characters but you have to fight and defeat them in order to unlock them. Which is always exciting.
What about you guys? Do you prefer rosters that are readily available? Or do you prefer unlocking characters?

Unlocking characters is fun. Unfortunately I never owned SF4 but only SSF4, so I didn't get to experience the fun in that series. Damn Capcom.
They seriously should concider doing the character unlock-thingie in SFxTekken. Maybe make us unlock characters they never even announced.

They should definitely do that. I love surprises.
Before I used the internet, I used to love unlocking characters in fighting games, but ever since there has been such an easy free flow of information, now I know who all of the unlockable characters all ready are and how to unlock them and it defeats the fun, so I would rather them just be ready all ready.

I loved unlocking characters in SSBM, but not in MK.
I'd say keep "special" characters locked like if we ever get another Playable boss or Maybe a new character or something like that.

This. SSBM did character.....uh.... unlocking the best. That's part of the reason I still love Melee so much.

I hate unlocking characters in games like MK and MvC3, but it's very fun in Smash Bros.

I hate unlocking shit, period. It's a cheap gimmick meant to extend the life of a game. All too often I find that games that require unlocking things are generally when you break the surface not much fun - it's not always the case but it usually is. If the core gameplay isn't enough to keep you coming back based on it's own merits then you've got problems.
Basically I think unlocking things is archaic and stupid unless the things being unlocked are fluffy extras like music or artwork or something along those lines.

Making you have to unlock characters forces you to expand your horizons and play as characters you wouldn't normally play as. Not to mention its always exciting when you do unlock certain characters.
So I'd say I'm for unlocking of characters.

I remember when I first got MKDA after a long Break from MK.
The only Characters I knew were Cage and Scorpion I think, I don't like having all New characters at the start and then returning characters as unlockable.

I'm indifferent in unlocking characters.
I wish some games had some challenge behind unlocking characters rather that, "you must beat this game in order to play so-and-so."
Like, in order to unlock this character you must:
Perform both fatalities with all characters in Arcade mode on Medium
You must do a 20 hit combo
You must defeat one super secret character
and
You must give Icebaby $10,000 in order to unlock Cyborg Smoke.
Yeap.

I used to like it, but not anymore now that I'm more into the gameplay.
For example, MK10. Fujin is very likely going to be in it and I want to pick him right away on day one and hit the training mode. I'm planing on maining him in the next game and I would hate to be forced to play as other characters before I can finally pick my fave.
