Hear me out.
In terms of what a video game system can do. I don't see how much different other than specs and graphics, that the PS4 would be that different. Yeah, I know. I don't work for Sony nor do I know their plans. My point is this. The PS3 can do a lot than just play games, I know you all know, but let me just point it out. You can stream movies, music, browse the internet, browse and download movies and games. And play DVD's, blu rays movies, cd's. Can connect to the PSP, VITA( which could be a add-on in away if used differently).
So I ask, besides getting back on topic. What would the PS4 do that the PS3 can't, to make it really worth the getting? I mean, the biggest leap Sony can do, besides graphics, imo, would be VR.
Anyways. I think to extend the life span of the PS3( not that it really needs it) would have an add-on with a better graphics card, 1-2 gigs of ram, a 500 gig HDD, 2 more USB ports and a network card. The add on could connect thru either, the network card or via a usb cable. To make it more worth getting. Sony could make it to run off the power from the ps3, without having to use its own power supply. The only downside to that part, would be a better chance of the PS3 overheating. They could make games that support it and the current games could look better and they could make it to where, the games no longer need installing on your ps3. Price wise. I could see it being between, $149.99 and $199.99. Would be reasonable, if it did match specs of the next xbox.
I am curious, if they went this route. Would you guys be against it and if not, what kind of add on, would you like to see? And maybe the add-on could put the PS3 on bar with the next xbox, in terms of specs.

I don't think the PS3 even has a network card (at least not the Slim one)
And this kind of add on would take too many resources for a USB drive (because they have a finite speed of data transmission, at around 60 MB/second, which would be hard to work with if you're storing/playing a game from there.
I think Sony should wait a few more years to see if a newer, better disc format comes with a better storage capacity than Blu-Ray, so we'd have that much more to work with, but I don't know how long the wait'd be for something like that.

Nintendo considered such for Nintendo 64, hence the holes in its bottom.
This recent news also suggests that the next-gen consoles will be a "quantum leap forward" what comes to the specs. What's more important though is the innovations and concrete additions. The re-establishment of PS3 Move, a new joystick, walking AT-ST legs for your console, a water sprayer frog that shoots H2O towards the losers... The list could go on.
There is no new disc format coming any time soon actually; it's not a long time ago since Blu-ray beat HD DVD. Xbox 360 had this HD DVD player as an external device too. The next game format will probably be immaterial.About Me
If it tastes like chicken, keep on lickin'. If it smells like trout, then get the f*** out!

Disc format?? I'm almost 100% sure next gen games won't even have a tangible format. It'll be streams and downloads on a whole network, which of course will have its pros and cons.
Well sony recently bought Gaikai, so i doubt that theyd release an add-on but make a streaming app so you could get new 'ps4' games on your ps3 and i highly doubt sony will change the controller much for the ps4, so you could still just use the ps3 pad.

I read that article as well. I also read somewhere, that next gen systems will be the last consoles, players will need to buy. Hopefully Sony and MS have smartened up and have decided to make the components more upgradable to compete with PCs.

This will never happen. There will always be a need for physical media and it will likely always be the mainstream method of distribution.
There's way too many variables involved with digital distribution and there's far too much of a market to lose in the physical media department.
One of the easiest ways for a developer to bank some extra cash is to release collector's editions of their games. No more physical media? No more CE's... and that's just one of the tons of reasons that I'm too lazy to list. Just think about it for 2 minutes.
