MK was one of the games that helped create the ESRB and remains one of the most controversial games, still, more than a decade after its initial release. So, where would gaming be today if this land-mark series had never existed? More than likely, games would have remained in the kiddie corner for several more years, and games like Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, Resident Evil, etc. (pretty much the majority of M-rated games) could not have ever been created. Ponder it! Speculate! "What if"s are always inventive. Fatality.

Oh man!

There would be no Tekken, VF, KI, DOA, GTA, and others. Nothing that's out today would be what they are today without MK.

The originality of MK has in some way either big or small has been copied by everyone in the industry. There's only a handfull of games that have made that sort of impact, but nothing to the level as what MK has done.

If you look closely enough at a lot of games, you'll see some MK influenced element in them from character design to story lines.

If MK was never made...

Grand Theft Auto wouldn't of been around same goes for any other M rated game.

Besides that I think there would have been a game that pushed the boundaries if MK never existed.

Im happy it was made.If I think about a life without MK I don't think I would of been into video games.

With or without MK, gaming would be more or less the same today. Other games would have taken MK's media attention(Doom and Night Trap spring to mind) and mature titles still would have thrived. Fighters wouldn't be much different as most of them follow the example of Street Fighter, not Mortal Kombat. I'm not denying MK's importance, but I think some people overhype it's impact a little too much.

nintendo still wouldnt allow m rated games if there were some (which im sure there would be), and i gaurantee that alot of the violent games today wouldnt be as violent if people hadnt witnessed videogame character ripping each others heads off. mk (and doom) really did raise the bar in videogame violence, but im sure alot of fighting games would still be around. street fighter is what set the bar for fighting games, so we would still have tekken, virtual fighter, dead or alive, soul calibur, ect.

Side scrolling fighting games would rule the roost because street fighter wouldn't have to have made a 3d fighter. They'd have the biggest fanbase when Tekken/Soul Blade/Battle Arena Toshinden come out and they'd probably beat them because of players' brand loyalty.

Even if MK was never made I think we'd probably be near if not in the same area with mature rated games. It was inevitable and even if the gaming industry wasn't they'd have to catch up with the violence in other media.

Exactly.

The only impact it would have for me, is that I probably would have never talked to anyone here.

I would have wasted more money on Virtua Fighter probbly, and would have found something els to take up my internet hours.

As far as gaming, it woulnd't be exactly the same, but it still would have progressed in a similair fassion. I guess you could argue that without MK Tobias and Boon may not have amounted to what they are today.

VF, Tekken, and so on would all still exist even if MK was never made. The GOOD fighting games (None of those F-list games that no one cares about) of today have little to no real influence from MK at all. Most take their aspects from SF2, not MK. The only really good thing MK introduced was the concept of juggles. Besides that, there hasn't been any real great contribution from MK to the genre in years.

Gaming would still be where it is right now. Not every game in history was/is based around MK (for the people saying there wouldn't be a GTA, Manhunt, ect.) The fighting f=game genre might be different and some games or ideas may not have been implemented until todays times, but other than that, it would still be the same as it is now.

it would be pretty close to the same. if mk didnt come around then some other violent game would have started it all.
