Hey guys. I am BEYOND a casual gamer. A friend gave me his old XBOX so I could play the new MK titles and stream Netflix/watch DVDs. Last night it did the infamous 3 red light trick. It will come on for a few minutes or hours, but it usually ends up crashing and flashing those lights. I've been trying to find a solution, but everything I find is hard-core McGyver crap involving taking it apart and soddering, etc.
Does anybody have some advice? I didn't really invest enough to buy another one or repair it, but I do enjoy it. Hopefully there's a solution somewhere!

Unfortunately the red ring of death is the end of the line. There's nothing practical you can do(at least that I've ever heard of).
Sorry to hear about this friend. I'm on my third personally. I don't think I'm even gonna bother with an x box next gen.

As much as I hate saying this, if you yell loud enough Microsoft will yield. I've done it myself. That's pretty much how America works these days; make a big enough stink and you'll get what you want. Call up MS, be irate, eventually they will send you a box.

Well if you really didn't pay much for the system in the first place, the cheapest option might be to send it to MS for repair (unless your willing to try and fix it yourself) . Even if it's not under warranty still, it could be cheaper than buying an entirely new system. I think MS charges $99-$150 for repair service. Unless you can find a used system somewhere else for cheaper. I personally wouldn't suggest buying a brand new 360 system at this point (or any current gen system) as next gen systems will be released by years end. It's just pointless to buy a brand new current gen system.

Well, poop.
You make a good point about the repair. I don't want to drop money for a new one for sure, but maybe I'll consider the MS repair option when it kicks the bucket. I'm currently unemployed, so that's definitely not a priority right now, however.
PS- Anybody hiring?!?! Damn if the LA job market is impossible!

just phone MS and say you have an Xbox thats given you the red rings. i was given 3 by my friends and had them replaced in a month for free. gave one to my mom, 1 to my nephew and have one hooked up to an old tv for when my nephew visits. just hold on to the hard drive if you were given one.
was a lot easier replacing the 360s then my ps1/2/3s. v_v
