Your Thoughts About Nintendo - Long Post
So, I recently had a discussion with a few people about the decline of Nintendo. The Wii U has proven that it's not that strong of a console, and there's rumors spreading around that there might be yet ANOTHER system coming out by Nintendo. That the Wii U was just more of an upgrade.
Nintendo is also going to mobile apps, which in my opinion is a huge and smart move for them. But I don't think it's enough for them to be as powerful as they were back when the Wii was still THE console to get. Now, I hear nothing but just Sony and Microsoft going head to head with each other, very rarely does someone actually bring up Nintendo.
There's absolutely nothing that wants me to get a Wii U. Even if I am a fan of Super Smash, that's literally the only game that makes me want to be interested in it. I remember when the Wii U wasn't released, there were a heck of a lot of users who were nagging at the others who already made their opinions that the system looked too gimmicky, that there was nothing to offer anything new. Opinions weren't being accepted by a lot because it was like, "How dare you insult Nintendo?" Well, I feel that the Wii U is nothing but one big failed gimmick, and that there's nothing impressive about the system, even the games aren't different either.
They also didn't advertise the product that well. None of their commercials spoke out to me that I HAD to go out and get the Wii U. They didn't bother showing off any of the games they featured other than Zelda and Mario. Oh gee, two games that haven't changed a bit throughout the years are being showcased once again! Show me a game that would actually get me interested, not something that I've seen a dozen times!
Not to mention, they also cut the price down as well as discontinued the Wii so that there's better sales for the Wii U, and that's because it's hardly doing anything in sales. The only other system that's doing quite well are their handhelds, but with that too, they sell the same kind of games for that, such as Pokemon and Mario. If I have to make a huge guess as to what is keeping Nintendo somewhat up, were the sales from Pokemon X and Y, and their latest Mario game...
Don't get me wrong, I like Nintendo, but the last few years, I haven't been interested at all with them. The only system I bother touching still by Nintendo is the N64, and that's because they cared about the games. That's why I LOVE, absolutely fucking love that system. They cared about the games they produced. I would rather play a shitty looking game that had awesome mechanics, awesome story, awesome gameplay. Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day... You hardly see those kinds of games anymore. A game where they jam pack so much into one game, the replay value is so high. Sure, I was a giant fan of the Wii, but the sad thing is that I didn't have any kind of interest replaying the games I already beaten. Epic Mickey was a fail, and I already got through everything in both Mario Galaxy one and two, got all the characters in Super Smash... what am I supposed to do now?
I just feel that Nintendo has really lost it, and I'm being more and more attached to just one system rather than two like I always have been. It's always been Sony and Nintendo with me, but now it's just Sony. I intend on just getting the Playstation 4. As of right now, Nintendo is just a thing in the past for me. So I'm asking you if you guys feel the same way, or if I'm just being a total nutcase and it's just me.

I used to like Nintendo, but after the release of the Wii I refused to support them. I really didn't like the direction they were going in with the whole motion control gimmick. The Wii-U is slightly better because it's at least a pad now and not a stupid stick.
But Nintendo has nothing to offer me. Aside from Smash and Mario Kart, their games don't interest me at all. I hate that they keep farting out Mario games every year, and Zelda every few years. Where's F-Zero and Starfox? Or Metroid? They shaft their IPs and play it safe by releasing things they know will sell. That doesn't sit well with me. How about releasing some new IPs if they won't release the old ones?
That and from a hardware perspective, Wii-U is unimpressive. I'm actually leaning towards getting an Xbone as my secondary console with PS4 being the first. Those systems have better tech and the quality of games will increase with time on those platforms.
I'm thinking after the Wii-U they should just stick with the handheld market. That's where they dominate.

I had to edit my original post because I forgot to mention the handhelds as what you mentioned.
But then again, they also had to do some changes with their 3DS mainly because people were not liking the whole 3D gimmick. Sure, you can turn it off, but if you have to turn it off for every game because it gave you either headaches or because it just doesn't make the gameplay interesting at all, why get it? Oh, well there's a 2DS that's coming out, don't worry about that! So that's another large sum of money being wasted because you don't like that 3D gimmick... So two systems, one you're bound to sell, and the other just gives you the old feeling of playing a handheld... What a mess!
See, right there tells me they're all after the gimmicks, and what better way to show off them by producing games they know will obviously work well with it, such as Mario? As what you stated, they have a massive collection of games they could have been making as of right now. Even if the Wii isn't to your liking, still, they could have easily made more Metroid, F-Zero and so much more. But they don't, because they think Mario and Zelda are the only two games that can do well in the markets and won't be an instant failure.
But Mario can save Peach so many times before it gets boring, and to be honest, after Super Mario Galaxy, it got tiresome, and it's not fun anymore chasing down a giant evil turtle in some different environment that's supposed to make me play a Mario game different than what we were used to back in the old times. And with Zelda... well, I can't really say that much because I never really touched any of the games, but I can easily say from watching playthroughs on Youtube, it doesn't seem that different.
If there is to be a new system from Nintendo, the gimmicks need to stop and they need to realize that they were powerful before it. They didn't need help from it. Which I don't think will happen, but I want it to happen. What's also depressing is that they can't even work out the kinks with online. You have all these other systems using online features and Nintendo hardly does anything with online gameplay. Why? Why is that not a huge feature? This could easily be a great option to have for Nintendo and they shun it away as if online playing is useless to have. Seriously? I don't think so.

Same here.
I've been saying this for a while now, but I feel Nintendo has lost touch with the gaming community. They've neglected the hardcore crowd who have gone to Sony and MS and concentrated on the casual and family market, which have moved to mobile.
They refuse to admit that features like online are a big deal and have created this whole convoluted and trite online experience with their games. They've also relegated the feature to almost nothing or an afterthought in most of their games. Millions of PSN and XBL subscribers can't be wrong.
Nintendo has also changed and tried to push new input methods with every console after the SNES. That is one of the reason I didn't bother getting the original Wii, it was because I felt it was gimmicky. Gamers (hardcore) are very skeptical to any input method besides a standard controller. Just look at the push back from gamers on the PS Move and Xbox Kinect.
While I want to say graphics play some part in this, the ds and 3ds have shown that you don't need cutting edge hardware to offer a great experience, but the tools need to be there for both developers and gamers for a great experience, which is lacking in the Wii-U. DLC, which is huge with both Xbox and Playstation has been almost an afterthought for the Wii-U, same with friend systems and matchmaking.
Add in the fact that Nintendo isn't giving games what they want. There have been games released in japan that haven't made it stateside, when gamers wanted them. There has also been call from a lot of gamers to release a true console experience of Pokemon. That game would sell boatloads. Yet Nintendo hasn't put any effort into a major Pokemon console release. The same goes for a mature Zelda title and Nintendo has killed off the Metroid franchise.
Microsoft and Sony go head to head because there is no competing with Nintendo.
Nintendo is the video game company. Its legacy and belt is stronger than anything Sony or Microsoft can ever amount to in gaming, and that's how it will always be.
It doesn't matter what kind of system Nintendo dishes out, because unlike with Sony and Microsoft, it's not the console that matters. It's the games.
For the sake of argument, allow me to clarify that in the end this is only my personal opinion, no matter how much I disagree with this statement.

Analysts have said that if it wasn't for Nintendo's name recognition and well established franchises, they'd be in just a bad a position as mobile start-up companies like Mad Finger or Rovio.

I'm not going to deny that Nintendo still holds a powerful legacy. It'll always be a great company. You can stick with any kind of opinion you want, it's fine with me.
The purpose of this thread is that I've fallen out with Nintendo. I have not been a happy customer with the company for a long time and I wanted to see who else is also a disgruntled customer. I'm not the only one, and I'll make it very clear that two days ago I had a long conversation on my boyfriend's page arguing with a few other people about this same topic. (Even though it started when my boyfriend posted a link about how Nintendo may not work with mobile apps).
Unless they do something where I HAVE to go and spend my money on a system of theirs, I won't be buying any more Nintendo products. It's not going to stop me from playing, like if a friend or whoever owns a Wii U and offers me a chance to play, I'm not going to just be a bitch and decline because I'm an unsatisfied customer. I'll play it, but I'm not going to be intrigued enough to go out and get one.
However... I will not agree with you on saying that Sony and Microsoft will never compete, game-wise with Nintendo. I would argue back, but this is not about console wars, it's about being a dissatisfied customer to Nintendo and I want to see who else is somewhat fed up with the way they've been.

Another problem Nintendo has is the lack of third party support. Why buy any big game on a Wii-U when it would be better on an Xbox or Playstation. Take Watch Dogs for example, unless Wii-U is your only console you're not getting Watch Dogs on Wii-U. Why is that? Probably because Wii-U has no exclusive content to offer.
I could list tons of other games but you get the point.

My only gripe with Nintendo is the lack of consistency with their franchises.
It seems now that a video game series will only see an update depending on its success in a Super Smash Bros. game. Truly, SSB is the biggest marketing strategy for Nintendo.
However, I must say it works wonders. Without Super Smash Bros., Fire Emblem would have never gained popularity in the U.S., and I doubt the Kid Icarus and Donkey Kong Country series would have ever gotten revived.
The only Nintendo franchise that remains consistent is Pokémon, and that's really because it belongs to Game Freak.

About Me

I have a Wii U, and I must say, it made me gain interest in games again.
When I bought a Wii, I got dissapointed that they forced the use of Wiimote in most games as I really disliked that control. For that reason I ended up buying just two games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Even then I played Brawl for years before finally buying a PS3.
The reason I bought a PS3 was solely to play Mortal Kombat games, as I was a big fan at the time. During the time I had a PS3, most of my games were fighting games (MKvsDCU, MK9, Injustice, MvC3, SFxT) because I never got interested in anything else. In fact, I only bought 3 non fighting games, Section 8 + Section 8 Prejudice bundle, and Magic 2012. The other games were bundled with something I bought (Uncharted and Uncharted 2 with a Dualshock) and a tournament prize (Killzone 3). After 5 years with the PS3, my interest in games was almost gone as I got fed up with shooters, bloody, post apocalyptic and dark themed games. The so called "mature" games were so dull to me, they lacked the fun that made me love games in the first place. The PS3 also made me hate DLC, as I felt it more as content purposely left off the game to get more money from the dumbed down consumers. Most people nowadays just compare the specs of consoles to say which one is better, they don't care about gameplay, they just want graphics, blood and gore, cinematics, and online multiplayer, they want to feel like they are grown ups by cussing, making fun of others, participating in virtual bloodbaths, makes me sick.
I sold my PS3 to buy a Wii U, and boy, I haven't felt like this since the Gamecube times. People complain about Mario and Zelda getting all the spotlight, that they are the same game over and over and truth be told I thought the same for a long time, that was until I played Mario and Zelda, you see, Nintendo just have this magic to make old franchises feel like they haven't aged at all. As I was playing 3D World it reminded me why I'm still a Nintendo fan, they truly are innovative. Nintendo makes fun games, and in this era of "mature" games, that seems to be frowned upon, instead the console (specs) wars are supported. In my opinion, a console is good, if its games are good, and that's why I think the Wii U is a good console.
These are the games I currently have: Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and Sonic & All Star Racing Transformed. All of them have been thoroughly enjoyable, even though only MH3U and Sonic Transformed have online play, even though none are shooters, or focused only in blood, or cinematic heavy, or "mature".
I'm happy with my choice and I will continue to support Nintendo because as I've said, I don't care about trivial stuff, I just want to have fun, even if I'm called childish, I don't really care, I rather be childish and have fun, than be "mature" and be all frustrated about graphics, console wars, and nonsense truly childish things.
By the way, I would rather get an Xbox One than a PS4 because of Killer Instinct, and the chance to play Rare games again if they decide to remake them.

Golden words.

This actually caters to my point a bit.
With PlayStation and Xbox consoles, people focus more on the system and its many functions than the games the consoles are supposed to be for. In fact, when the Xbox One was introduced, the advertizement detailed everything about the system except video games. That was actually the reason I got turned off from the system.
With Nintendo, I know I am going to buy a video game console for playing video games. Hell, with any console I buy it's for playing video games. Microsoft and Sony tend to fall flat on that a lot with their consoles, with their many extras and unnecessary gimmicks. At least with the Wii, the remote was actually for playing video games. That is why I love Nintendo. In the end, it's all about the video games.
This is why I refuse to buy a PS4 until the games I want are released. I don't want a gaming console for watching movies, listening to music, surfing the internet, or using Facebook. I have other stuff for that (like a laptop). I want a gaming console for gaming. At least with Nintendo, I know I'm getting just that.

Here's where I have to disagree.
Sony's entire marketing strategy with PS4 was that games were the primary focus, that it's a gaming machine and everything else is secondary. Sony also has more than 10 first party studios working on PS4 games, some of which are entirely new IPs. I'd say they definitely have their priorities in the right place. There's also the fact that Sony embraces indie developers like no other. By allowing indies to self publish their games, indie devs are able to put their games out much faster.
Microsoft is actually doing a good job too. They've got some really good titles out there. Now their whole marketing with Xbone is it's an all in one machine. So you'd be right to say gaming isn't their primary focus. However, they've shown that gaming is still very important to them. Games like Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Titanfall, and Quantum Break are great examples of this.
I really don't want to turn this into a console war, as Nintendo is the primary focus here. But I did feel it was necessary to point out that Sony DOES care about video games first and foremost. And that despite Xbone is not primarily a gaming console, they are doing a good job with games.
On the subject of Nintendo, there is one game that looks surprisingly good. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Easily one of the best games on the console so far. I'd buy it if I had a Wii-U.

Except I'm not one of those people who cares more about the system itself rather than the games. I care about the games that I can play more than anything when it comes to any system. That's why I LOVE Nintendo 64. A console where graphics wasn't everything. It was the games that matter. A shitload of extra fun games where the story was great, the game play was fantastic, and graphics wasn't that big of an important feature.
And that's where I feel Nintendo lost me. I don't think they care about the games anymore, they care about how to feature this moveable controller and how to change it around throughout each new game they make. Sure others will disagree, but this is how I view it and it's not thrilling to me. I am not a fan of a system that cares only about three of their biggest sellers when they could do so much with the other games they have such as Donkey Kong, and Metroid to name a few. I'm not one of those people who enjoys seeing a twenty-something year old series not change things around.
I just don't see the love anymore like they had when Nintendo 64 was the main console. And I played that more than the original Playstation.

I don't really see how caring about other issues with consoles is considered childish when we all put in our money to get something and not be satisfied with it.
It's like World of Warcraft, if I'm not happy with what I'm playing with, why would I continue to put myself though crap, wasting my money with it? I'd stop immediately if I was dissatisfied with the game, and I did for a while. I wasn't interested in the material they threw out at us, I was not a fan of the story, I hated the way things were playing around, so I stopped. But they managed to get me back into the game once they released something that got me interested, and it's been keeping me interested because they fixed something I wasn't a fan of. This is exactly how I feel with Nintendo, and I wouldn't say it's a childish thing to be upset about.
A customer that's not happy with something does have the right to be upset about it, and if they feel like venting about it, there's nothing wrong with that. And I'm not trying to purposely put Nintendo down, I still love the company, but as of right now, their products they're releasing isn't something I'm a fan of and I will not go out of my way to get it. If they put out something that I want to get, I'll think about it first, read up about it on Flipboard and other video game news related sites. I'm just a person who has been around video games all her life, even wanting to work in the video game industry one day. There's nothing wrong with a little venting every now and then.

Nintendo is without a doubt my favorite company out of the big 3. I hope it does what it can to survive. In addition, the Wii U is an amazing console with obvious flaws, but I love it to death. Shame not everybody sees it in the same light I do.

I've always loved Nintendo. My first proper console was the NES and i've always had nintendo consoles since. I've also almost always got the consoles AFTER their 'lifespan' because of money.
My flatmate and i just last week got DS lites (along with pokemon white for me and black 2 for him) and we're ecstatic with them. He also found me Ultimate MK3 for the DS - proving it really isn't about graphics to put out good games for things.
I've had my Wii for some time now too and love it. The devs tried making the controller as adaptable as possible and i think it really does work no matter what your preference. - e.g. Mario kart has about 4 different controller styles.
I'm not won over by the 3DS or Wii u either, but like i said i don't buy consoles new and i am relly happy with what i've got. I don't plan on bying any more since i have enough and there's still games for them around.

Funny because that's exactly why I like the Wii U.

You sure you're not talking about the Wii? Because the Wiimote is an afterthought in the Wii U as it should have been in the first place. As for the Gamepad, most people think it's the Wii U gimmick, when in fact it's just a controller with a screen. The Wii U isn't centered around the Gamepad as the Wii was with the Wiimote, it's just there for extras, like being able to switch items in Wind Waker without the need to pause, which is really cool. People say Nintendo haven't been using Metroid, but they forget that they made 2 Metroid games for the Gamecube (Metroid Prime 1 & 2) and 2 for the Wii (Metroid Prime 3 & Other M). Granted, they need to use more franchises like Star Fox, F-Zero, Custom Robo, and let Mario and Zelda catch a break. But that doesn't mean they haven't changed things around, that's a very ignorant statement.

Do you mean console wars are mature? Yeah sure. If you care so much about specs, why not play in PC then? It's so much better spec-wise than the ''next generation'' consoles.

3 games? That's all you can take from the Wii and call yourself a giant fan? Please... Metroid Prime 3 (and you say they haven't used it), Metroid Other M, Xenoblade Chronicles, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Super Paper Mario, The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, Mario Kart Wii, Monster Hunter Tri.
Sure, you can say none of those appeal to you, but to say they're bad just because you're hating on Nintendo, is stupid.

I know that the gamepad isn't mainly focused, but I see no use for it, hence why I stated that it's a gimmick. If it's just for extras, why couldn't they try to use that for the Wiimote alone instead of creating something that is chunky and big (I know it's not THAT huge) that serves a lesser purpose rather than a main? I see it just as a gimmick. You might not like that, but that's how I see it. Oh well.

I don't get why you think arguing about something is childish when you're arguing with me right now about how you don't like that I'm disliking something you like. I don't want to go to PC gaming because I enjoy playing on consoles. The only time I play on my laptop is for World of Warcraft.

1.) I'm not going through my entire Wii game list and nitpick everything I found boring or wrong with them, so I decided to just do three games. I mean, seriously, you want me to go through all of my games? Yeah I don't have to nor do I want to.
2.) I never called myself a giant fan, I still like Nintendo, but I am not as pleased with them as I was back when Nintendo 64 was their main focus. There can be a "not so huge" fan for Nintendo, you know. Not everyone needs to be a die hard Nintendo freak.
3.) I am not hating on Nintendo, I had never stated ANYWHERE that I hate them. I am still a fan of them, but like I said, I am becoming disappointed with them with the way they have been since the release of the WiiU. There is such a thing as to becoming disappointed with something that one has liked for a long time. I mean, look at some people for Mortal Kombat.
You're obviously a huge fanboy of Nintendo, which is fine. But not every company is going to meet the needs of every single fan. There are going to be some fans that become disappointed. If something I like isn't doing something I enjoy, I'm not going to waste my money on them until I see that they're doing something that has me spending money for them. As of right now, Nintendo isn't doing that, and I should be inclined not to put money down on something that doesn't flatter me. Why it bothers you greatly, because from the way you posted it just seemed that I pushed the right button, and it truly bothers that there's people out there not satisfied with Nintendo. I'm not happy with them right now, I'm not going to force myself to like something if it's not making me happy.

^Hillarious.
I'm probably in the minority here in that I haven't bought a handheld system since the Nintendo Gameboy or a Nintendo console since the N64. My tastes changed as I grew up and the flagship Nintendo characters really didn't/don't interest me. I don't long to see the next big Mario game or the next iteration of Zelda.
Now the Wii is a fun little party game system but, I never seriously considered buying one for myself. Haven't played a Wii U beyond some demo stuff at stores and it's really not my thing either. One cool thing about Nintendo though is that it's a true video game company. Sony and Microsoft have multiple interests but Nintendo is squarely into gaming.

Except I was referring to Nintendo as a company, not the console when I was replying to Godly. I'm a fan of the company, not their latest products. And of course, I'm not going to lie and say I didn't like the Wii, I did, but sadly I found it to be boring after awhile. If I have to be clearer on what I am a fan of or not, fine, I'll be clearer from now on. But I do find the reactions to some of this to be a tad bit silly. I mean, not everyone is a fan of Nintendo, but just from the reactions I'm getting, it seems like it's a sin to hate, even slightly dislike a company that's been around since the 80s.

That's the thing, Nintendo is a one trick pony. All they can do is create innovative gameplay. Which is great, but as games are evolving it's clear that innovative gameplay isn't enough anymore.
I've heard several people say Nintendo should go the Sega route and just become a software business. I actually think it's a good idea. They'd get way better sales.
