- DC Universe Orders Live-Action ‘Doom Patrol’ Series With Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns Producing

The upcoming DC-branded streaming service, DC Universe, has ordered the live-action series “Doom Patrol” for 13 episodes, Variety has learned.

Based on DC characters originally written and drawn by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney and Bruno Premiani, the one-hour drama is described as a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief).

The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of fellow DC Universe series “Titans,” “Doom Patrol” will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.

The series will be written by Jeremy Carver. Carver, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions will executive produce. Johns is the president and chief creative officer of DC Entertainment. Berlanti Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television. The show will go into production later this year for a 2019 launch.

With this series order, Berlanti will now have 14 series on the air going into 2019. The incredibly prolific producer will have 10 shows on broadcast alone. Of those, six air on CW: returning shows “Arrow,” “The Flash,” Supergirl,” “Black Lighting,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” and “Riverdale;” and the new CW football drama “All American.”

Woo! If you've been following Titans casting, you probably had susicions. Here's hoping it can stretch the boundaries of what's expected! Doom Patrol is always at its best when its deliciously weird!

- EXCLUSIVE: DC’s Streaming Service Courting Kelsey Grammer to Lead ‘DOOM PATROL’

Spinning out of Titans will be Doom Patrol, a group of super hero outcasts made up of Elasti-Girl, Robotman, Negative Man, Crazy Jane and Cyborg and led by Dr. Niles Caulder, aka The Chief. Last month, Revenge of the Fanboy revealed a character description for The Chief and now it seems that the creative team has set their sights on Kelsey Grammer as the man to bring Dr. Caulder to life.

The timing of the interest in Grammer is of note as Titans is still filming, giving Grammer, or whoever they end up landing as The Chief, time to make an appearance on that show which will work as a bit of a backdoor pilot for Doom Patrol. It’s possible that the Doom Patrol is at least partially functional as a unit when Titans kicks off, given that Elasti-Girl (played by April Bowlby) will be appearing on Titans.

Interesting choice. Shout out to the Frasier fam!

- ‘Doom Patrol’: Brendan Fraser To Star As Robotman In DC Universe TV Series

EXCLUSIVE: Brendan Fraser has been cast as one of the leads, Robotman/Cliff Steele, in DC Universe’s upcoming live-action series Doom Patrol, from Greg Berlanti and Warner Bros TV.

Fraser will provide the voice-over for Robotman and will appear in flashback scenes as Cliff Steele. Riley Shanahan has also been cast in the role of Robotman. He will provide the physical performance of the character on stage in full body costume.

Written by Jeremy Carver, Doom Patrol is a reimagining of one of DC’s strangest group of outcasts: Robotman (Fraser), Negative Man, Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby) and Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero). Led by the mysterious Caulder, they’re called into action by the ultimate hero for the digital age, Cyborg (Joivan Wade). Banding together, these rejects find themselves on a mission that will take them to the weirdest and most unexpected corners of the DC universe.

Another interesting choice! Looking forward to seeing Robotman in action.
