Let me start off by saying that anyone that has read any one of my posts on online multiplayer, knows that I'm not a fan. I've decided to try and come out of my shell a little for this game.

I've been playing ranked games for the better part of the day. I've been having my ass handed to me for the better part of said day. I don't mind that. Win, lose, learn, get better.

I decided to play a little more tonight before I went to sleep. Won some, loss some, then came upon my last match of the night. I skimmed his "hero card" and noticed he had a 0/0 win loss record. That didn't really settle in to me. I know I hit up some training/arcade mode before I jumped online, so I assume most would have a similar practice.

The match starts, and I, still being in the "having my ass handed to me" state of mind, immediately go on the offensive and more or less crush the guys' first life bar. He says "just go ahead and beat me dude" in an annoyed tone. I'm not mic'd up, so for lack of a better idea, I oblige. I finish him off and as the connection cuts out, he spouts off some bitter b.s., and that was the end of it.

Me being me, I kind of start to feel bad(yeah, yeah). My current win loss is something around 6/14(yeah, yeah) so I'm obviously not great myself. But, I guess the gist of it is, should I have taken it easy? What do you guys think? Do you take it easy, or do you swing for the fences(like I did) and damn the noobs?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing you guys' thoughts. Thanks!

Play player matches, focus on getting better and not on your record. Your online record is meaningless, what matters is getting better and having fun

I agree. The whole bit about wins/losses leads into the whole "should/do you take it easy on people with a shitty/nonexistent win/loss record.

Honestly, player matches are a better experience. When I play in either though and I end up fighting a "Noob", I do usually take it easy on them since they just got the game and it's understandable. I also try to send some friendly advice, such as try going into training mode for a bit and practicing with some characters or play battles to get used to the game. I had a pretty good set with a girl, I taught her how to clash and we ended up going 9-9.

^ Records may be meaningless, but online honestly isn't. The netcode is a HUGE step up from MK9's, and online can improve your game a lot. Just remember to have fun and not stress about winning/losing.

I finally got online to play with other people when XBL gold was free last weekend and I ended up playing a few matches of Tekken.

Now I'm by no means an amazing player but I don't get absolutely annihilated either so I'm just on the badder side of all right. I ended up playing a guy who seemed about as good as me but perhaps I had a slight advantage because towards the end of our 3 bout match it seemed like he just gave up. He totally still could have won because of my love of show off-y unsafe moves but he just seemed really defeated and I really wondered why.

I think people online sometimes enjoy obliterating the noobs so they just get used to it. If it happened to him in one game then it probably happened in countless others.

I'm sorry is this even what we're meant to be talking about?

You should totally annihilate newbies as long as it's not with Deathstroke, or zoning in general lol.

@oracle...close enough.

@redman...that's kind of what's weighing on me. Win/loss records certainly aren't everything. I kind of feel like cultivating the community and making it fun should be what its about. Then I think to my first player/ranked matches...and yeah, I caught a "no mercy" vibe.

I'm not down with death stroke honestly. Said match was Green Lantern(me) vs Harley Quinn. He immediately jumped for an interactable I countered with GL's ermac style grab, and said crushing began. I'm not much of a Zoner.smile

I say it because most of the time people complain about zoning rather than rushdown. It also looks way less cheap. Some people will complain about anything though, and will call you spammer, combo spammer, block spammer, noob, no lifer, etc.

I was on a 15 win streak on Ranked. My record is like 22-5. I have this rule where I only use Grundy on Ranked. And I never use interactables unless someone uses them on me.

So I fight this Deathstroke. Tries to zone, uses the sword flip to get distance, ignores all combo potential. But I completely shut him done with Grundy. After the match I sent him a message offering advice. I told him that if wants to zone with Deathstroke, that he should use Deathstroke's Character Power first. He told me he was still getting used to the game and thanked me for the tip.

Another match was where I had to fight a guy with a record like 144-73. He was Superman and kept using the air heat vision enhanced. But again, I shut him down with Grundy. Afterward he sends me a GG message, I return the favor.

It feels good knowing there are some decent souls in Ranked. And not just a bunch of elitist dickheads who think a record means everything.

It's hard to not care about your record when you know it's there, but that's just me. I hate records. I wish they don't exist.

It depends. I usually don't go easy on an opponent because I want to show the other player what the game looks like at high level. Also, the more winning strategies a player is exposed to, the faster they'll improve.

That said, I want the other player have fun. I played a lot of local MvC2 in my day, and I know how feels to be in constant lockdown. I don't know how many times I would play against Thanos/Juggernaut/Doom, and while being zoned I'd turn to my friend and say, "it's like I'm not even fucking playing the game!" If I can play a style that keeps me at peak strength but allows the opponent to stay pro-active, that's my solution.

Also, some people are going to complain no matter what. No strategy will be fair enough in their eyes. I've gotten hate mail in MK9 for zoning, for throwing, and for "doing long combos" (lol). The fact is that people don't like losing, and if they're sore, they'll find any way they can to rationalize why they're better and deserved to win.

And to the other posters: some of the best advice I was given was to care about your online stats. The reason is because if you do, you will play every match as if you have something to lose, and that is HUGE for tournaments.
