Say I want to rip a few Mortal Kombat 3 gif animations while using mame. How would I do this? For example, I want to capture Scorpion's spear special movie with each and every frame it contains and then make it into a gif. I just need a method for capturing every frame without having to do it the tedious way - capturing a printscreen screenshot frame by frame. Thanks

Mashing the screenshot button is always the easiest and best way IMO.

Yea, that's not the kind of answer you wanted, I know.

Heres a good method, use the pause button (usually p on your keyboard) and then hold the shift while you hit the pause button. This will take you to the exact next frame of movement. Just keep using shift+p until you find what you are looking for.

Thanks for the tips. But one qustion - when you say mash on the print screen button can you do that and hold multiple screen captures at the same time? All I know is that when you hit print screen, it overwrites whatever file you previously hitted printscreen for and only gives you one frame.

2 more questions: When you pause in mame, the screen dims, how can I do do a clean pause? And is there anyway to get rid of the background and just leave the character sprites on screen so that I can rip them more easily?

No, not the Print Screen button. MAME has a screenshot button, it's usually F12. You can make as many screenshots as you want, and all your screenshots will be saved to the MAME/snap folder.

Not in MAME, sorry. However, it's possible in ZSNES, but that would mean low quality SNES (Duh) sprites.

Some backgrounds make it easier to get the sprites than others. Like if you wanted an MK2 character, you'd be best taking pictures of them on the Pit 2 stage since the Pit 2 has a mainly solid background color. In MS Paint, you can use the paint option to fill in the entire solid area

The Pit 2 in MKII is a great stage for ripping, as is the Pit 3 in MK3. The characters don't have any shadows in there, so you won't get confused with people who have black pants or black shoes (pretty much everyone)
