So a few weeks ago I started an attempt to create Mortal Kombat 2X in M.U.G.E.N., basing it off of the impressive Mortal Kombat Project build. This game was meant to be a recreation of MK2 but with the "kombat kids" replacing their parents/mentors. After (spending many hours) creating the first sprite of my Mortal Kombat 2X project, I came to the realization that I had 100+ more sprites to go... and that was for all EIGHTEEN (18) characters. I bit off more than I could chew and it didn’t take much convincing for me to quit this project (for the third time now).

Instead of taking a total loss and not giving myself a chance to create a project with the Unity engine, I decided to recreate Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. After some thought, I decided against it because it’d be a “same shit different day” game... but what about SCORPION?

Fans, myself included, have always day-dreamed about MKM: Scorpion. A fiery fantasy that would reignite after rumors of Fire and Ice (the MK Shaolin Monks sequel) swept the internet. Of course, to this day, there has been nothing.

I’ve always wanted a game exploring the Shirai Ryu, taking us back to feudal Japan perhaps, or whenever the clan was form. A project like this, however, is still too big for just one person, and a newbie at that. So, instead, I adjusted the scope to simply be a game about Scorpion right around his death and reincarnation.

I went through many design iterations of how the game would play. A beat ‘em up like Streets of Rage? This would require the removal of the directional pad to input special move commands... so then I thought of having a “trigger” button like MK Shaolin Monks that you’d have to hold. Finally, I decided to go with the 2D era of MK because that’s what many people are familiar with. It will play just like the original Mythologies.

I know, I know! Everyone hated the “turn” button in MKMSZ. That is why I will take the time to program the option of enabling or disabling this feature. In its place, the player can instead use a “cycle target” button where you choose who your main opponent will be, and Scorpion’s direction when flipping around will be determined by who you target. Of course, there will be the ability to target nobody so it’s set to the default.

The game will include a training level which not only introduces the player to the game mechanics (which will be reminiscent of the original mythologies games) but also the story behind the Shirai Ry and Lin Kuei. I have enlisted the help of longtime friend and fellow sprite editor @Venomark (who is a talented writer as well) to assist me with story writing, dialogue, and props. I will not have the boring “read your own story” type cut scenes (no, I will not animate that shit). I will have voice-over reading with MK1/MK2/MK3 ending style cut scenes to develop the story between levels.

I have a lot planned for the story, but I do not want to ruin it. The story will take place before the events of the original MKMSZ and it will end sometime after MK1. With that said, you can probably use your imaginations and figure out what the game will have in store for its players. There will be new things to see, and A LOT of throwbacks!

I will make a ONE LEVEL beta for this game, and if reception is good and I enjoyed making it, the other levels will follow. This beta will not feature any new sprites or special moves. It will be a proof of concept to test out the game mechanics only and how well I built the game using the Unity engine.

Subsequent updates will be a level at a time, more than likely. It may take a while to release the final, completed... but I hope it will be worth the wait! I will be posting artwork and level designs as I progress so you know I am still actively engaged in its development. So stay tuned!

And in case you were wondering, to keep this game semi-current/relevant, Scorpion's final sprite design will be based off of his classic look in MK11. Although I am going for a more realistic look for some areas of the Shaolin Temple (as you will see) the core areas will remain very similar to that of the original. The new areas that Hanzo explores will be custom made, but with some splash of nostalgia in the designs.

For some eye candy, here is my latest level design for the Shaolin Temple Armory, and a concept art I did for the life bars. Yes, that is a fatality blood orb like MKSM. Fatalities will work like they did in Shaolin Monks. Check out my deviant art gallery for more designs and updates as they come. I will only post in this dead forum every now and then.

So this will have truer MK gameplay than a Beats of Rage build? There were a couple interesting MK sidescrolling quests made with the Beats of Rage engine in the past.

Never heard of it.

I am actually now leaning towards more of a Streets of Rage game play style. Trying to recreate MK was pretty abysmal.

Um, after quite a few conceptual revisions, I can't quite answer that. The project morphed into a cooperative game similar to Streets of Rage (genesis) where Scorpion and Sub-Zero are fighting the Lin Kuei during the events of MK3. I was calling it Fire and Ice, and out of sheer coincidence, it is almost like MK11's story mode where the two are fighting the cyborgs.

Oh, um, I have one and it’s going to be a lot of hard work for you though, (even though this was made on months ago?) I think that, not only will it be cooperative, but a competitive scoring game for this (MK11) story mode MUGEN game(?).

So whoever has the most score than the other player for scoring a hit on the opponent, the reward for the winner of the match gets a character they fight and use it on co-op

Ok so I think that there would be new villains in town for example: Evil Raiden(MKD-MKA) or either Dark Raiden(MKX-MK11). The chose is for the players to challenge one of them of choosing their adventure on their path they make by their decisions and actions like one of those chose your story games! Okay I have no idea what I am saying now.
