I'd like to point out the images of MKII Shang Tsung hidden in the dragon logo. (I didn't notice them until they were pointed out to me.)

Are they those Black blotches??

Yes, they certainly are.

My goal was to have some kind of generic-looking pattern in the background, then cover it with sprites of Shang Tsung, then somehow blur or otherwise warp it all until it was barely recognizable, but still possible if you focus.

The dragon guy himself is gray, sort of like a zombie's skin. And everything seems kind of blurred and a little out of focus, like a zombie's mind. Perhaps the MK Dragon has been bitten by a zombie??
