This is an excellent piece of artwork! You are certainly skilled with rendering realistic and believable humans, and you clearly understand human anatomy.

I've noticed that you have a tendency to depict Mileena as a classy, regal sort of gal. This costume has a royal feel to it, and the flower motif feels extravagant. The bold colors are pleasing to look at, and the green eyes are an interesting choice for Mileena. You definitely don't have a problem with deviating from tradition! I look forward to seeing more! 5/5

@ETHER:

I suppose these Mileena costumes go along with the idea of an "empress of Outworld" situation. I think a girl like her would wear pretty things, hehehe... 'cause she's so ugly underneath it all. Also, to hell with tradition! haha! I aim to remove the word from the english language. grin

@TheBigMistake:

Less clothes, yet somehow less trashy, yes? Heh. I think so, anyway.

Thanks for validating me, folks. grin

no offence, but THIS is exactly why mileena has become such an awful character in my opinion. the art is GREAT, but the outfit - well, just about non-existent. when is somebody gonna design a really awesome, layered and complex look for one of the female characters?

again, great art, but i just hate the design.

Um, no offense, but I don't care.

Mileena is a seductive character, she has a hideously disfigured face and so desperately wants to be validated. Her personality is flawed, even revolting, her face is full of teeth that deny the girl any romantic interaction other than sex. No one can get close to her, she can't be kissed, the only man who accepts her disfigurement is a monster himself. Mileena, however, is not a monster. She is human as well, she has emotions that Baraka does not have and could never have. A tarkatan male can never give her what she needs to be happy, so she seeks power, stimulation, and yes, physical sensation. This is why I think the "insane" direction they took her in in this game is fitting, because she is so deeply conflicted she can't control herself

The woman in her tells her to attract and seduce to compensate, but the monster in her tells her to do it in the most raw and uninhibited way: With her body, nothing more. She lacks the self discipline to be genuinely alluring and attract a man in the most pure way, so instead she flaunts the one thing she has that has been shown to her as being good. Her body.

Her outfit doesn't make her a terrible character, her outfit is, in my opinion, the key to her success as a character.

As for a layered and beautiful design for a female character, I am currently working on one for Sindel. I am not so shallow that I will put all of these women in strings and see through fabric, but I will never cover up Mileena. As you can see, this design does not come from a vulgar place, I'm not even straight.....

I put a lot of thought into every detail of this design, it is not just something to provoke boners. There are flowers on it because there is a language of flowers. She is a rose because roses are often considered the most beautiful flower, yet they can draw blood when touched. I impleneted hibiscis into the design(though I forgot what they looked like and tried to estimate) because in the language a hibiscis represents hidden beauty. The heart shape on her chest is intended to express what I mentioned earlier, that beneath her fangs and violence there is humanity, emotions, a soul. The shape that repeats in a spiral on her arms, across her mask, and on the straps on her hips, is called a vesica piscis. In many ways it is viewed as a symbol for femininity and the vagina, I implemented it to make her sexuality deeply ingrained in her design, not just in how bare it is, but the clothing itself tells a story. The black inbetween each piscis is a tooth, rows of endless black teeth. Black is a very deep and telling shade, speaking of secrets, ugliness, death, while the teeth are pretty straightforward for Mileena. I've read that she invokes the image of vagina dentata, which is the myth of a woman with teeth in her vagina. These myths were warnings to discourage the sexual abuse of women. I think it is a fitting image for Mileena. She flaunts her body and sexuality and she kills any man who latches on. This can just be her tarkatan wild side, but her humanity conflicts with this, at least in my view of the character. She is protecting herself from her own insecurities. That protective instinct is filtered through her tarkatan side and manifests itself as murder.

You know, after reading what I've just said, apparently I do care, haha. Thank you for being perfectly honest about it as your displeasure with her look has driven me to speak so much.

I agree with Harle on this. Perhaps if he were to draw Kitana the more layered costume would work. Mileena as Harle said is meant to be seductive.

sorry, i dont buy the "she's seductive" argument. there's wearing revealing clothing (kitana, jade, all the women) then there's wearing nothing at all (mileena). it's difficult to take a character who wears a cloth in her third costume seriously. again, the art is great, but the design is just not very clever.

take a look at some of the work on this site - especially from guys like EmperorKahn and JAX007 - look at the level of detail and depth in their designs. this is just underwear and a pair of sleeves. i cant believe fans of mileena are happy to see her going to shit like this.

Oy, nevermind. I can ramble on for days about every reason this costume is relevant, but you are not interested in that. Please don't come back. You're not interested in the picture, you're not interested in the work, and you're not interested in what I have to say. Good day, sir.

And you know what, good for them. I'm glad their designs are so detailed. But I'm also glad I can put so much thought into my work that it completely goes over your head, and I'm glad that you appreciate none of the detail in my work because you focus on nothing but her skin. Her skin took me ten minutes to color, her non-existant costume took me close to five hours. Do not respond to this. I'm not interested.

I'm aware my response may be a bit harsh, but when someone says "Despite how every single detail in this costume has some meaning beyond just it's aesthetic qualities, it is not clever. Here look at some people who do what you do better. How can any Mileena fan appreciate this shit?".... I am not going to respond respectfully when you refer to my work as shit and point me in the direction of someone you think could do it better.

jeez...SOMEBODY can't take a little criticism.
i have ONLY had good things to say about your art.
it's mileena's character in general and her fans' attitude towards her that i dont like. frankly, i dont care how much thought went into the costume, IT'S BARELY A COSTUME. it's a bikini and some sleeves. and if that's what defines mileena's "character", then, honestly, mileena's a shit character.

Point proven. Begone.

What you said was not criticism. You've insulted the design, you've insulted the character, and you've insulted me. You ignore my level of thought and detail because it is not suited to your tastes. That is not constructive. You can appreciate that yes, I can draw a series of lines that in the end resemble a person, but if you do not like the actual substance of the image, why bother? Generally if a work is poorly done from a technical stand point, constructive criticism on how to improve my technique is welcome... But when someone dismisses my efforts and calls it 'shit' because it does not fit their personal preferences, that is not welcome and I will react accordingly. I do not care nor in any way desire to hear about how much you dislike the way I view the character, clearly you are not the target audience of this piece. When I tell you not to respond, I do mean it. So I will say it again, do not respond. You don't want to have an open conversation about my work. I spoke freely and explained in depth my views on the subject, and your response was to dismiss it entirely and reiterate how little you actually care for it. If you do not care, do not speak.

It is definitely an amazing piece of artwork you did there! And I truly like the name - Outworld Rose... it sounds like a very mysterious delivery of flowers. A very dark force though. Incredibly beautiful. I am amazed!

If you're going to make an equivalent for Kitana, I recommend to name it after this. I like it when you didn't draw the veil to show the teeth once again. It's obvious! Great skills you have. Keep up the work well done.
