I use paint. That's right, I use Microsoft Paint.

Basically the key is finding a good base sprite... You can find sprites at various websites on the internet.

But yes, once you've found that good base sprite just zoom in and carefully recolor skin tone and that kind of thing. I then use a bright color like a sky blue to make an outline of new clothing or edits to existing clothing. When I do this I'll use another sprite with similar features so I can use it for reference. After that all you have to do is recolor everything and add in shades and folds and wrinkles and such.

I don't know if that makes sense but that's what I do. Just take your time and make sure you get all the details right.

For example of finding a good base sprite, here are two of my first sprite edits, both of them are Li Mei showing off both her normal and alternate costumes from DA. It also shows the original base Psylocke sprite.



You can do a lot if you pay attention to detail and take your time.

If you have a program that allows you to rip individual sprites from animations than fightersgeneration.com is your best bet. There are hundreds of sprites. The guy that runs the place is a dork but the site has hundreds of animations

If you need sites with already ripped sprites than you can go to kikouken.com, a badass Chun-Li shrine that has sprites from a bunch of different games like the Alpha series and SNK Vs. Capcom Chaos, all of them Chun-Li though obviously.

There's also cammyfan.com, it has a lot of Cammy sprites but I'd only go there if you can ignore the webmasters fanboyism.

There are a ton of others, just use a search engine.
