Kitana, Princess of Outworld, A favourite of many. 10.000 years old. That's a long time even to imagine for many of us, even for the ones who are a little older. The things she may have seen, the lives she has lived....There have been many men surrounding Kitana before Liu Kang, many stories that could yet be written or shown.

Kitana was born in Edenia around 10.000 years ago, as Edenia was still free. She is shown in various semi-canon media such as the animated series or the Legacy series ranging from infant to teenager by the time Edenia had lost 10 MK Tournaments and was invaded. In the John Tobias approved but also semi-canon comic Kitana&Mileena, she was even a young lady, capable warrior, by the time Shao Kahn finally won the War. In the Shaolin Monks game, which is semi-canon or even canon, she remembers her first years, but is kept under a mindspell by Shao Kahn so that she keeps thinking he's her real father.

Shao Kahn was one of those who truly wanted Kitana's affection. His daughter by marriage, though not blood related, he cared for her in his own way and wanted her to worship and obbey him. Whether his feelings for Kitana are romantic or paternal is a guess, but considering that they are unrelated, he must have seen Sindel in Kitana and had a certain love and romantic affection for her.

The religion in Old Edenia was the worship of Protector God Argus and the Elder Gods. In the MK vs DC game, Kitana renamed Shang Tsung's island the Argus Island and created the most important Edenian taskforce there. Even though that game is non-canon to the main events in the series, the background information is. It is therefore proof that Kitana was deeply religious and worshiped the Elder Gods and Argus. Around the time Edenia lost the 10th Tournament, Argus and Delia were discussing their plans against Shao Kahn's invasion at their balcony in the MK Armageddon story intro scene. Taven also talks about how his family had managed to protect Edenia from Shao Kahn's invasion up until that point during konquest mode. It is very likely that in order to unite the House of Argus with the Royal family of Edenia, King Jerrod's family, Kitana was intended to marry either Taven or Daegon in the near future. There is a precedent in a God marrying a human in Argus with his wife, Delia. However, that never came into fruition, as Taven was left asleep for the next 10 thousand years and Daegon became a traitor to his kind after killing his father and mother with the Godslaying weapons.

Another character who was interested in Kitana's affections is Rain. He too was raised during the Edenia-Outworld War after being orphaned by one of Shao Kahn's raids. In the MK3 ending of Rain, he is told the truth of his ancestry by Kitana. This also is proof that Kitana was not an infant, as the Legacy series incorrectly showed, as she had access to information she could have known only if she was old enough by the time Shao Kahn's invasion ended (probably lasted some years). Although it does not directly imply a romantic bond between Rain and Kitana, the fact that they are close and that she is the one to draw him into the fight against the Emperor suggests it. In the MK Conquest tv series and the animated series this is obvious, as Rain is portrayed as a competitor for Kitana's heart. Being an intelligent schemer who desires to take over Outworld or Edenia, Rain must have contemplated the possibility of a marriage to Kitana these last 10.000 years. It would be a political advantage for him in his ascension to power. However, if Kitana has considered this as well is unknown.

In the MK Conquest series set 500 years ago, Kitana and the Great Kung Lao share mutual respect for each other, which turns into admiration and affection. Though by the end of the series she is captured and assumed murdered by Shao Kahn's shadow priests (though never shown on camera), she could have only been brainwashed into serving the Emperor again. No in-game reference has been made to Kitana and the Great Kung Lao, but 500 years is a long time not to be romantically involved with anyone.

And this brings us to the present. Liu Kang is the last of the important male characters desiring Kitana's affections. Although the age difference is great, Liu Kang is an adult, an honorable fighter and a good man, managing to win Kitana's love. In death however, their twisted selves appear to share power, but whether or not they still have feelings for each other is unknown and even unlikely for revenants. Kitana opting to support Earthrealm in the conflict with Outworld and not doing her tasks properly infuriated Shao Kahn, but if we look at it from the perspective of a man who had been brainwashing Kitana for thousands of years only for her to rebel again every time and now sensing he's losing her for a puny mortal like Liu Kang, would be grounds for jealousy and would make his character more tragic, if not actually relatable.

Well, there you have my analysis. I hope it was as fun for you as it was for me. I'd really like to see Kitana's past in Edenia explored more, her interactions with Taven/Daegon, Jade, Rain and Tanya from that time and the Edenian Resistance fight against Shao Kahn's invasion from when they were teenagers. I think they could base an entire anime series/ tv series. Game around that period, there would be many more characters around: King Jerrod, Queen Sindel, Argus, Delia, Shao Kahn, Shinnok, Quan Chi, Raiden, Fujin, Reiko, Drahmin (as a human warlord), Ashrah, Havik or Hotaru (potentially that old) etc.

What I think makes for the best story and actually makes the most sense is: Shao Kahn invaded Edenia, killed Jerrod and forced Sindel into marriage and adopted Kitana as his daughter. Shao Kahn actually fell for Sindel, trying desperately to win her affections, but failing. Sindel reluctantly kills herself and leaves baby Kitana to be raised by Shao Kahn because Sindel knows Shao Kahn will raise her as his princess/heir, so since Edenia is now part of Outworld, Kitana, in a way, will still be heir to the throne of Edenia. Shao Kahn has baby Mileena created by Shang Tsung to help ensure Kitana remains under the assumption that Kahn is her father and Mileena is her twin sister. Mileena ends up flawed with the tarkatan teeth. While growing up Shao Kahn trains them both in the art of kombat and assassination, Kitana always being better than Mileena causing Kahn to favor Kitana more, which causes Mileena to grow more jealous and resentful towards Kitana. Kitana is beautiful and a better fighter than Mileena.

(Yes I’m aware that some of this is pretty similar to the legacy series, that’s where I got some of these ideas from because I actually like that version of their back story more than any of the others.)

I think it makes for a better storty and shows more depth of character if Shao Kahn actually did love Kitana and Sindel. He is very one dimensional as the boring evil dude that just wants to conquer all the realms, there should be more to him than that.

So this brings me to MK2-3. I think Kitana should have stayed loyal to Shao Kahn, she still should have found out about Kahn killing her real father and Sindel committing suicide, but since Kahn raised her for her entire life as princess of Outworld, she stays loyal to him. She still confronts him about it and he confesses. Kitana upset that she had been lied to her entire life, rebels a little bit, but not to the point of completely betraying Kahn and becoming a good guy.

I like the subtle love interest between Kitana and Liu Kang, that could have made for some good Romeo and Juliet type storylines. They somehow cross paths and are instantly drawn to each other, but once they realize who each of them is, they can’t act on their feelings openly, so Kitana secretly sees Liu Kang as an act of rebellion against Shao Kahn, because she is upset about him lying to her. Maybe Mileena finds out or something and tells Kahn or confronts Kitana, there could have been a lot more story potential, if they didn’t make Kahn so one dimensional. We could have had more of an Outworld soap opera.

I always loved the thought of Reiko actually being Shao Kahns and Sindels son, Sindel faked baby Reiko's death and gave it to Edenian resistance, there Reiko grew into a powerful warlord together with Rain. Eventually, Rain betrayed Edenia for personal glory and power and the resistance was shut down, Reiko was a prisoner and during this time (long after Sindels death of course) he was discovered by his father Shao Kahn, which sees potential in Reiko, but doesn't know it is actually his son. He has Shao Kahns behavior and Sindels hair lol, it is just a match made in heaven. Reiko would be a cool HALF-Edenian male, half outworld, half Edenian is cool anyhow!

About the Kitana thing, I never liked her relationship with Liu Kang... Why a princess always has a love interest anyway? I also hope King Jarrod will enter mortal kombat one day with cool abilities, this time with the time-controlling Kronika would have been a good point to summon King Jerrod back.

BTW, I would also LOVE more background info on the Edenians and more story plots there, maybe even a game about Kitana's life before the merge/during the merge/after the merge. I love Edenia, too bad Boon doesn't really feel the same.

@ckl3456789 I'm sorry man, but you're wrong on a few esential things:

1. Kitana was not a baby. Only media representing her like this was Legacy and it was wrong. She was old enough. We have an image of her as a young child in Sindel's ending in MK3 with Shao Kahn's shadow looming over Edenia. This is most likely because she grew up in the Edenian-Outworld War. The original creator, Tobias, approved a comic which had Kitana adult by thw time the invasion was over. Though that comic is non-canon, it contains John Tobias's background information

2. Shang Tsung wasn't even born 10.000 years ago. His bio says that he is from Earthrealm, a former participant in a MK tournament. Given that Earthrealm didn't have a civilization except for cavemen more than 6.000 years ago and Shang Tsung is definitely Asian in origin, I'd say he's at most 2000 years old. The MK Conquest tv series shows this in detail and how he was an Earthrealm warrior pretty much like the Great Kung Lao but corrupted by Shao Kahn. He couldn't have been there 10.000 years ago, let alone clome a baby Kitana.

I'm very glad for that, the world would be awfully boring with only working sheep that think only work, sport and such things are important...

I never understand these kind of statements, people go on holiday, that is also a waste of time and money (and very bad for the planet), they play piano or guitar, also a waste of time in my eyes, everything on this planet is a waste of time, you die eventually. Better have fun before that.

Sorry, thought you were another one of those, look-at-my-life-being-so-important-and-your-life-being-so-empty-you-can-do-this-kind-of-shit person :-p

@mattteo

I was not claiming my version of the story was correct or canon or anything. I was explaining how I would have done their story.

Your point about Shang Tsung is right though, I forgot Shang is only 1,000 years old.

Btw, in those Tobias approved comics, Shao Kahn does say that he wishes Kitana was his real daughter

I'm not picking through all the errors in the lengthy ramblings of misinformation you provided. But, I will make a couple drive-by points.

  • None of the television series are canon. Nor has "Legacy" ever been recognized as anything close to canonical.
  • Shao Kahn has never been romantically interested in Kitana, who he had brainwashed into believing was his daughter. Their relationship never ventured into and it was never even implied that their relationship was in any way crossing into the weird realm of incestuous filth that you're assuming.
  • .

Excluding Paul W.S. Anderson's "Mortal Kombat" adaptation, every attempt to turn MK into an animated or live action series or movie has been a resounding failure. I'd rather NRS drive their stakes into developing an open-world or similar action-adventure title that gives us a much more solid understanding of the backstory of one (or more, in the case of anyone with ties to any other character) character(s). Personally, I don't need to see yet another disasterpiece attempting to forcibly wedge itself into established MK lore.
