As many of you know, shortly after MK11 was announced, GameStop Italy dropped some pretty heavy Kombat Pass leaks in their description of the Premium Edition. Mind you, these could all be lost in translation but if we are to take them at face value, it looks like a BattlePass system is looking more likely to be implemented.

Now, I think this is heavily likely given the current state of loot boxes in the gaming world. I cover in this video here, should you be interested on why I believe NRS will be going away from loot boxes in favor of a Fortnite-like BattlePass system.

The benefits are in the transparency - no random NRG drops to be found. Instead you have a multi-leveled system where in each tier you level up, you unlock, say, a new piece of gear or a color shader or something for your character. This works wonders for Fortnite and keeps the game addictive and kids and adults alike coming back for more to grind to get that next unlock. The next unlock that you can see laid out before you.

EXAMPLE:

Say you have Sub-Zero. His BattlePass like the rest of the cast is 100 tiers. Each tier you unlock something akin to -

  • Tier 1 // MK1 Face Mask...
  • Tier 5 // Color Shader...
  • Tier 10 // MK3 Tunic...
  • Tier 25 // Premium Skin...
  • Tier 100 // MKD Shredder Helmet...

etc, etc.

How would this sit with you in replacement of loot drops? I for one think its fantastic, if implemented right. We do of course run the risk of them charging per character for the full battlepass, but that remains to be seen. Let's dicuss! What are you hoping to see in terms of this and how gear is unlocked in MK11?

This would add a ton of replay value. I really hope this is how it will work.

@FistfulOfDatas same here man! Really hoping. Would give me incentive to grind through every character!

Actually this is a super cool idea. I hadn’t seen that leak but if it’s true, that will keep me playing for an unforgettable amount of time. I just hope it’s not behind a paywall.

@Shaolin_Flame Yes! My thoughts exactly. A really fun way of unlocking stuff. I know not everyone plays Fortnite, but I find their way of unlocks to be really well thouht out and worth while for their players.

I love the Idea! Incentivizing with clear objectives bypasses many of the Loot box issues while giving you goals and bonuses to playing. It's just a better approach all around. In the Fortnite battlepass system there are characters that have certain requirements to unlock the full versions of their costumes. Really dig the idea unlocking things not just as a result of points or some such thing but also conditions or specific requirements.

My biggest fear about this is having to reach level 100 or whatever the cap is for each kharacter to unlock all their gear and that would suck. Hopefully we can unlock them in the krypt as well

I can’t imagine they wouldn’t implement the krypt somehow too still. A combination of the two working in tandem would be ideal

@GoDisNotHereTODAY I think it's a good idea, hopefully they can take it and run with it!

I really like this idea as long as it is implemented right. I didn't play Injustice 2 so I am unaware of how bad that situation is.

If they incorporate the Krypt into it and just have everything unlockable through in game currency then thats great. However I doubt that will be the case because WB likes money. I think if they do this battle pass thing right it will come out amazing and they will profit massively. Having said that it would be really easy for them to screw the pooch. As a massive MK fan who is also super frugal it is hard for me to determine a balance that is both good for making as much money as possible for NRS and keeping the content affordable for us. They have a lot of options. Here are some things I would like to see.

A "free" pass and a "paid" pass similar to Fortnite. There are a few reasonable ways they could do this and many ways they could mess this up. I think almost everything in the paid pass should be cosmetic. No attack boosts, no new moves, nothing like that. They could add some of this into the free pass but I would hope they keep it pretty scarce. They could charge for a pass for each character, but I think that would piss a lot of people off and the better option would be to have a paid pass for the season that is inclusive to all characters as opposed to making somebody pay 10 bucks per character AND have to play through to LVL 100 for each character to unlock everything. This would destroy the completionists among us, especially if these are seasonal passes.

Maybe there is an overall progression and a per character progression that are both meaningful?

There is character progressions (just one, no paid pass or anything) and an overall progression which has a free and paid version. Perhaps DLC characters can be a part of the paid pass.

@newt27 Great comment. I agree that charging per character would piss off a ton of people but also at the same time, they would need to monetize it somehow to turn a profit, I would imagine. Especially if it's replacing the loot box's.

They could release the game complete at launch with no future DLC and it would turn a big profit. How many MK games have operated at a loss, especially recently? Loot boxes, microtransactions, etc. sole purpose are to make even more money. They exist for no other reason. The fact that publishers and company CEOs keep pushing out the false narrative they're used to make a game profitable is laughable.

This could go one of two ways:

1- Cool progression system that has a multitude of unlocks for all characters, adding an obscene amount of replay value and constantly pushing you to unlock things for your favorite fighters.

2- It ends up being packed with either microtransactions or pay-to-progress-faster crap, or both, devaluing the entirety of it and stripping away all the fun.

My heart says it'll be 1, my brain says it'll be 2.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of. One of the least attractive features of "Injustice 2" was the gear system, especially with how it was implemented online. Personally, loot boxes and other microtransactions are the reason I refuse to touch specific game series. I will not pay for stats. To put it mildly, you'd have to be one ignorant individual to actually WANT a pay-for-stats/progression system. That's one of the things putting a pretty heavy damper on the video game industry as it is. No need to ruin one of my favorite series of all-time with petty business practices. As with every preceding title, everything should be earned in-game. Otherwise, you're just overcharging for a game that isn't complete.

I agree.

I don't mind putting money into this sort of a system if the items are purely cosmetic, like MKX costumes; given the way they've built Injustice, it probably won't be just that. Paying to instantly unlock the entire Krypt is about as far as I'd like to see progression-based transactions go in this franchise.

I phrased that wrong. I didn't mean to turn a profit, all MK games have been profitable, you are right. I meant maximize profits, so to speak, haha

I am with you there brother. I believe with my cold, dead heart Boon will give us option 1. But realistically it will be 1 combined a bit with 2!
