OTHER IDEAS

- During the closing credits of Mortal Kombat, background music can play “Farewell” by ApocalypticA or the theme music from the movie “Last Hurrah for Chivalry” and show highlights of winning arcade/tag team ladder matches in similar fashion when video game player lands final knockout hit against Shao Kahn, maybe just highlighting the great hits and combos landing during the course of one’s climb up the ladder either in arcade ladder or tag team mode with various cut shots and freeze frames of the matches against opponents.

- In tag team mode, it would be cool if the tag in partner was tagged in the match and executed a simple front somersault or a front ground roll and also tagged out of the matches with back somersaults and backward ground rolls unless executing a specialty move for partner in match as an assist. It’d be cool if they also after being knocked out would stayed laid out on the floor during the course of the match like in MK1. It’d look more realistic instead of being knocked out the screen. And when the round is over the camera could just cut to round 2 with the fighters of the original round in their stances again. That way the action of gameplay would continous and fluid yet realistic.

- It’d be cool in the “Courtyard Arena” that the monks in the background would clap only after a won round like in MK1, instead of throughout the match and if the claps sound effects were louder. It could sound like the clapping from the fight scene between Bruce Lee and O’Hara in the movie “Enter the Dragon” but just after each round instead of each scored hit for a dramatical affect in winning the match.

- It’d be cool if in the “Choose Your Fighter” screen, that they presented the fighters with the actual sinister digital facial pictures like in MK1 instead of the mini-sized pictures of the fighters. And in the Arcade/Tag Team ladders, once they cut to the “Vs.” screen, in the picture they execute a brief form in their martial arts style of fighting like Soul Calibur 3 does in the character select screen through motion captured animation. It could be a motion captured animation of the characters or digitized motion capture reel. Obviously with a multitude of characters the screen would be easily filled with these facial pictures so they could rotate the group of say “7” sinister looking facial pictures of the characters throughout the screen in a similar motion that a revolving door rotates the different doors, is the same way a fan could rotate/navigate the “Choose Your Fighter” screen. So for example, they could be formatted like five fighters on the top row, two to the left, then a space for the “Mortal Kombat Dragon Logo” then two to the right, then three down on the bottom row making a total of 7 characters for each screen. Then there could be some arrows located on the bottom towards the center of the screen with the words, “Previous” or “Next” to navigate to the next screen of fighters to rotate/navigate to. In the scenario of a two player match up, player one would have the authority to choose their fighter first or go the next screen in those scenarios.

- Maybe sometime further down the line in a future Mortal Kombat, it’d be cool if the game presented an Adventure Mode. This could be a change up from the monotonous one-on-one/tag-team game play. It could be formatted like the third shooter video game like Assassin’s Creed or Dynasty Warriors. This can also offer another mode for fans to unlock hidden secrets, characters, arenas, fatalities...etc.

- It’d be cool if Scorpion didn’t have a pair of ninja katana swords on his back in his retro-ninja costume and looked more like the human Scorpion from MK1 and had the ability to morph in to the hell spawn Scorpion that he is now. It could be sort of like a temporary mode or alternate personality for Scorpion. I also don't understand the significance of him having swords on his back when he rarely uses them and also there so many possible uses that can come from his harpoon.

- It would be cool if there was a Entry Mode to where there was a stage specifically designed for this mode such as a dojo. In the dojo there would be a fighting mat with fighters in long sleeved gi and pants kneeling on both knees surrounding the mat. Or a training room like in the movies “Matrix I” or “X-Men” inside the mansion. Here, a Sensei or Sifu character could watch a sparring session in a high chair with student-like fighters with novice skills surrounding the fighting pad. And as you progressively get better, you fight more skilled fighters up to a novice level so it wouldn’t be too difficult (this mode would test of how well you can control your character with hand to hand combos and other techniques before fighting in the real environment.) And a visual demonstration of this would be the student fighter’s skill level you’d spar with would be that they wear different colored belts indicating their skill level until you’d get to a student wearing a white long sleeved gi with a black belt wrapped around their waist or a students wearing a long sleeved black gi with a black belt wrapped around their waist or the various colors of a long sleeved gi with a black belt wrapped around their waist. (The color of the student's long sleeved gi could indicate what the students are good at.) As you’d advance you would receive “1st level dan” achievements or “2nd level dan” achievements and so forth and so on. There could be separate levels and "Destiny Towers" in Entry Mode to help find what one would be good at for the separate long sleeved gi uniforms are all the way until receiving a long sleeved black gi. Also fatalities or specialty moves would be disabled or not allowed to be performed in this scene because of your learning. Finally you’d have to take on the Sensei or Sifu character in a sparring session. It could be like your training for the tournament Mortal Kombat. It could also be a testing ground before you could actually unlock the normal format of the one-on-one/tag team mode of the game and this could apply for each character you choose. You’d be required to past this entry level mode of the game before unlocking the Mortal Kombat Arcade Gaming Modes with each chosen character. That way you gain some familiarity with the character before using your character in Mortal Kombat on the ladders and get use out of all the characters. This also could be just an additional mode when this mode has been passed or mastered by all of the selectable characters in the game.

- Or you have another “Test Your Knowledge” Mode where video gamers would be quizzed on button combinations of your characters specialty moves, fatalities, novice level combos, X-Ray Moves, with you having to enter in specific button combinations across the screen to match the actual console button combinations. Prizes could be Koins or other unlocked materials, secret characters, arenas or whatever.

- Another thing I am blown away from is the background and stages from the game. Sometimes I’ll just look at the scenery instead of the game play because it looks so authentic. The lead artist/designers of the stages are some very imaginative and creative people. I wish I could see all the original stages from MK1 remained with the upgrade in computer animations. Also I’d like to see the “Original Pit” the “Warrior Shine”, the “Palace Gates”, with the original cast of MK1 in statues. Also maybe Mortal Kombat can revamp the arenas from “Bloodsport” “Shang Tsung’s “Soul Chamber” from MKDA or the arena from “The Quest” the movie. That would be great!!! I also think that the next Mortal Kombat should retain all the stages from the current Mortal Kombat 9 game.

- As far as mechanics go, I’d like to see characters stay frozen in the exact posture they were in right before being hit with Sub-Zero’s standard freeze like in MK1. It looks like the character jumps into a scared posture when being frozen, I don’t understand the reasoning behind that switch up.

- It would be cool if in the “Choose Your Fighter” screen, you could choose your character’s costume. So if you like more traditionalized costumes you could choose that attire to where it would be a default option for the characters, or if you like the civilian clothing costumes you could choose that as an alternate. That way you give the video game fan options to choose what their character can look like. I’d also think with the options of various costumes and attire, I think the more traditionalized attire such as a gi, Mandarin vest/robes, kickboxing pants or hakama for the characters should be the primary/default option for their costumes and more civilian clothes could be alternate options for the characters as maybe hidden or unlockable options in the game.

- Another mechanic I wish that could be touched up some more would be the way that characters fall down. When being hit in the air, like an air-juggle combo, the characters turn into some rag dolls with their limbs flapping. If Mortal Kombat could emulate Tekken’s mechanics in their air juggles and fighting that would be cool!!!! Also I’ve noticed when a knockout hit is administered; the character just falls down like a statue. They look stiff. I think if they, again, mimicing Tekken’s mechanics on knockout hits and the mechanics of how characters, “Shake out the cobwebs”, “and Get back on their feet”, “Get up feeling overwhelmed” “Adjusting/Dusting off their Attire” “Spitting blood out of the Mouth” like the old school kung fu movies and basically showcasing with more detail the emotions/expressions and realistic simulations of how someone would get up from a knockout hit after a lost round would be more realistic. I also think that mechanics of general or standardized moves should be crisp. The mechanics of Johnny Cage’s sidekicks and shadow kicks along with Sub-Zero/Scorpion were very precise in MK1 and MK2. Daniel Pesina or other great martial artists, or whoever can mimic those exact mechanics of martial arts moves would be nice.

- It’d be cool if Scorpion had his exact original MK1fighting stance, along with Sub-Zero, Johnny Cage, Kano, Sonya Blade and Raiden. I think that would be better. Really it would be nice if all the characters had realistic fighting stances that were conducive to their fighting style of martial arts.

- It’d be cool if Tag Team mode had three and four tag in partners as well as the standard double team partners. I think it would be great!!! It’d give the game a different dynamic and also make things more challenging for the video game players. It would also make for some fun online play. Or on your “Battle Plan” or “Choose Your Destiny” screen, you could have a Survival Match. In this particular match, your character in a single bout would fight three to four fighters sequentially with just one energy bar by themselves. Or in a tag team mode, it could be a series of five fighters in a row. It would be towards the top of the ladder, maybe right below Goro or Kintaro, after the last Endurance Match or the Legion of Assassins Matches. Also there could another mode of Survival Mode where you could test how long your character would last against a streamline of fighters with a portion of energy regenerating in between bouts.

- It’d be cool if Johnny Cage’s shadow kick left images of himself trailing behind like in the original MK1, really with all of his shadow based moves, his shadow punch, shadow kick and other shadow based moves he might have or new ones given to him. I liked the visual presentation of this manuever like in MK1.

- I think there should be a motion to where fighters can “Show Mercy” by waving off his opponent and they collapse to their knees in defeat after the announcer says “Finish Him/Her”. They then could just simply strike a winning pose towards the camera. Or if they are getting beat so bad, such as a losing by a flawless victory, the losing character has the option to perform a hara-kiri move and kill themselves by breaking their own neck in a kneeling position on both knees and then fall over to the pavement. Or they’re could be a motion to where the losing opponent can perform a button combination and get a little boost of energy on their life bar to where they get a “Second Chance” right before the announcer sadistically laughs. It could also bring about a different dynamics in gameplay. It could be an unlockable feature in the game or features to have after a certain amount of Koins are obtained.

- It’d be cool also if Mortal Kombat had various options for the number of rounds players could participate. For example they could have two, three or four rounds for a single match. I think that would give players an option to choose how long their gameplay would be to their liking.

- I really hope that the next Mortal Kombat game tries to focus on a centralized theme of an epic Asian time period throughout its stages, graphics, costumes and attire for its characters, gaming features, and themed music soundtracks through the course of a fight. I don’t know if it could be something to the effect of using traditional Japanese or Chinese instruments but part of the appeal that Mortal Kombat 1 had on me, was the epiciness of the overall game. It didn’t come across too cartoonish. I thought that it had the perfect balance of realism and fantasy. The characters weren’t too far-fetched with their moves, looks, and personas. The sound effects were very realistic to how someone would sound letting out a war cry in battle. Scorpion’s iconic catch phrase of “Get Over Here!” and “Come Here!” sounded like he said it with conviction, as if he had just a been punched in the mouth or had a bad day. The catch phrases for most of the roster in MK9 are promising and I think should be kept as well. MK1 also had a lot of continuity with the feel of its characters. There weren’t a lot of variations of the costumes. That’s what I appreciated most about the game and the realism of how the characters were presented. The ninja characters looked like an authentic ninja would in ancient Japan instead of having the motor cycle bike mask, or oxygen masks. They didn’t have all the armor and shoulder pad accessories that they have now. I guess they could be good for alternate looks and costumes but I like the traditionalized looks of the characters and hope they could be a primary look for the next game as an option.

- I would be nice if Mortal Kombat retained all the characters from MK9, except Mileena, Cyber Sub-Zero, Freddy Kruger, Cyber Cyrax, Cyber Sektor and Sheeva. I don’t see them being mainstay characters throughout the series. Unless their gameplay and moves can be enhanced in some fashion through a brilliant stroke of creativity or a person/group of people who can really relate to what those characters are all about. I also think if they do retain Mileena that they change her name to something like "Ravish" to where she as a code name. Mileena sounds too common of a name for supposed assassin. I also think they should consider changing the names of Ermac to "Kollage" since he's suppose to be a fusion of souls combined into one person. Noob Saibot should be change to "Nightshade" because the code name has flair and pops. Although Noob Saibot is supposed to pay homage to the name of it's creators, the code alias Noob would be better sounding in my opinion. It could also provide a means for a continuation of a storyline for these characters connected from MK9.

- I also think they should introduce new characters specifically new female Kunoichi Ninja characters with a look similar to Ibuki from Street Fighter to where they have a overlapping sleevless gi with a thick sized sash wrapped around their waist and loose fitting pants/Sashinuki-hakama like pants. They would also have markings over their heart indicating their alliance with a particular clan say for either Lin Kuei or the Shirai Ryu. And they would have a moderately fitting clothed mask concealing the lower half of their face, neck and chest. And any other characters introduced the game would be able to execute at least nine unique specialty moves, have their own backstory, flare and personality. The ninja characters would also have a fighting method such as Ninjitsu, Hapkido/Akido with variations in styles based on geographical locations. The male ninjas can have the same ninja pallete swap as in MK1 with different colored vest or shades for match ups.

- I think MK needs to bring back "Endurance Match Ups" and also for the more skilled fighters, they can have "Survival Matches" where they take on four opponent's in a one on one format intertwining in the match ups by tagging in and out.

You put a lot of work into this, and you've brought up some interesting points, so here's my feedback.
-I like the idea of a highlight clip playing at the end of arcade.

-I think the current tag-in/tag-outs are fine. Why must they all do rolls and somersaults, when they could do something character-specific?
It would be cool to see tag victory poses with both characters.

-I don't like the idea of flipping the character select screen. Seems unnecessary.

-I'd like to see an adventure/MK:D Konquest mode again, too, someday.

-What does it matter if Scorpion has swords on his back? I assume that he, as a ninja, had a sword or two. He uses them midst combos and for pop-ups (and fatalities), so I don't see what the problem is.
What I want to know is where the hell that garotte wire came from in Sonya's 2nd fatality, and why Quan Chi needs a sword (he never uses) for his 2nd fatality..?

-I think that dojo/belt thing is unnecessary, but just a training tutorial (hell, even a SF4/MvC3 combo challenge) for each character would be nice.

-In terms of characters getting up and dusting themselves off, it sounds an awful lot like Tao Feng, with those little cutscenes interrupting the fight. If they weren't in cutscenes, you'd probably just end up dash canceling (or attacking) out of the animation, rendering it utterly pointless, unless you want to get hit again. (Idle poses are also pointless, but you will see them if you're playing Test Your Luck or something)

-I'm confused as to what you mean by 'number of rounds players can participate.' If you're talking about rounds per match, you can already set it to three, I believe.

-The series has lost that mystic Asian feel, which many liked. I just prefer very dark and atmospheric, like MK4. It'd be nice if several stages/character designs catered back to the Asian style, though, I'd like variety. And as for the realism of Sub's and Scorp's costumes ala MK1, ninjas probably weren't meandering around in baby blue and canary yellow outfits. :-p

I know what you mean that they certainly don't look too convincing now either, but every single 'ninja' in the series, besides Scorpion, is not actually a ninja, so they've got some room for creative license.

-Again, why do you want to change characters' names so badly?

'Mileena' is too common of a name for an assassin? I don't know a single other assassin character named 'Mileena.' Why would she need a code name if she has no intention of even concealing her identity? The lady loves the limelight.
Besides, she has had the same name for 18 years, so why would they change it now?

It's not like with Smoke or the Sub-Zero bros. that when they revealed their true names, they suddenly were only referred to, in-game, as Tomas, Kuai Liang and Bi-Han.
Ermac sounds way better than Kollage, and Nightshade sounds like a Marvel/DC superhero/villain name.

-I'm ninja'd out, to be honest, and want to see some other kind of character emerge. (Subz, Scorps, Rep, Smoke, Noob, Ermac, Rain, Chameleon, (Tremor), Mileena, Kitana, Jade, Khameleon, Frost, Skarlet, (Cyrax), (Sektor), (CSZ), (and Cyber Smoke)) A Red Dragon would be nice, or another member of SF.

-Endurance and survival modes would be much appreciated.

I hope you don't take any of this the wrong way, and I hope I don't come off as a bitch, but I'm just giving you my honest opinions on these ideas.

I appreciate you feedback on this topic as well, but I'll expand on my reasoning for the various changes.

- As far as the tag-ins and tag-outs, I see a simple somersault or ground roll would give a more fluid transitioning in between partners while the transitioning between characters with the theatrics seems a little far fetched and choppy in terms of transitioning between characters.

- In terms of flipping throughout the "Choose Your Fighter" screen I would feel that there would be too many characters to display all on one screen so I mentioned flipping the screen down below only to not only emphasize the characters in their facial pictures. I would think otherwise that the characters would look photoshopped images animations instead of the real pictures like MK1.

- Scorpion having a sword or two just seems out of place if he hardly uses the weapons for only pop-ups and combos. I think it would underutlized in that respect in the moveset. I'd rather him have a wider range of move variations of his signature move of the harpoon. Either that, or I think if he is to have swords he should use them more in combat. And I agree with you on with Quan Chi and Rain.

- The cutsceens of characters getting back up I thought would be an added touch of realism. Characters getting up, spitting out blood, getting up feeling overwhelmed, popping back up on their feet would be an added touch to emphasize knockout blows in between rounds.

- In terms of the realism of the MK1 palette swaps of ninja characters, I would agree that the sky blue and bright yellow outfits weren't colors that a epic ninja warriors would wear but even so, the dark blue color was more in line with the colors of a ninja so that could be Sub-Zero's default character. But that I think would make a better feel than the costumes that they have now. I think they look like variations of oxygen mask, motorcycle bikes, and veils instead of the regular clothed mask like in MK1 and I just appreciate the original look better that current ones for both Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Rain, Ermac and Smoke.

- I would definitely like to see the more epic Asian themed stages and tone for the game as well. I thought that MK1, MK:DA, MK2 and other series had some really graphic and detailed backdrops from their games. It would be cool to see some of the backgrounds revamped or reimagined like the "Courtyard" with the statues of all the original cast lined up in the background. But the variety of fighting in the Matrix Subway, or the streets are also really good adaptations as well. I think all the stages that they currently have now would be fine to have.

- As far as Mileena's name, an assassin I would think would like to keep their government name a secret, when especially dealing with their line of work. So I would just think that Mileena would be putting one's identity way out there as well as it just seems too regular to me. I always envisioned assassin characters having an alias or code name and "Ravish" would seem like to be a fitting description of her supposed personality. To me, Ermac sounds like a mythical wizard from the Harry Potter movies. Doesn't sound like a code name for a ninja character. Kollage would seem to be a more accurate conatation for a character who is fused with various souls. And "Nightshade" would be a better depiction for someone who has the ability to control or manipulate shadows imo. If I had never played this game, I would have thought that Noob Saibot would sound like a line of cybernetic robots or super computers.

- Well in terms of ninja characters, there are quite a few characters but I would like to see the emergence of some miltary trained Kunoichi like ninja characters that didn't look like strippers or pole dancers. Ibuki from Street Fighter has a really good look with a sleeveless gi, clothed mask concealing her neck, chest and lower half of her face and ballooning ninja pants or Sashinuki hakama attire without looking like a low life female character. It stays true to a female ninja's attire without over emphasizing the skin or sex appeal.

But those are just some ideas that think would give the overall game a better look in my opinion.

Some really good ideas! Just a bit to much to respond on all the points. Maybe you could separate some points in different topics next time?

* Test your knowlegde sounds like fun. I can see it working.

* Adventure mode. This one is hard, as much as i like to see it, i know it's alot of work. GFX these days are very detailed so if they did adventure mode it should look detailed aswell. I dont care for the GFX but im sure they dont whant to take that risk.

* Johnny cage shadow kick. I agree. It looks cool and makes sense for JC.

* Old background stages. Agree. MK9 made them perfect. It's a big part of MK's look/setting. The series should always remain some of the klassic stages. And making new ones that fit into that setting.

* Hara kiri. If it's a simple and quick hara kiri i say yes. If they are all different per character not so much. Just what fits his/her personality.

* Ninja outfits. I agree. Less is more sometimes. No need for random stripes, armor, pockets etc. It takes away their MOBILITY and increases their WEIGHT. No need for Ninja's/ stealth assasins (Lin kuei, scorpion, Reptile) to be very armored. It would make more sense if they were knights or from a medieval war battle to be massivly armored.

* Asien/oriental theme. I agree. I miss this aswell. Not perse like in MK1 but MK2 and MK4 looked very mystic aswell. Chanting monks, oriental statues, priests etc. is what i like to see more in the series.

* Basic costumes. Very good one. Leave the costumes simple and close to their classic look. I like the idea that i can earn body parts with coins etc. that i can add on the default costume. Tho it should be limited or else characters would look really off.

Some of myne ideas

* sub zero's classic freeze animation. It looked better and original. Now he does a simple hadoken like animation. Same could go for Reptile's forceballs.

* Slower paced stances. In the older MK games (first 3) when you stood still, the characters looked really dangerous. How they slowly moved from left to right (somehow on the rhythm of the BG music) looked really aggressive. Also if you walked foreward it looked like they were really hungry to kill you. Agressive and focused. I always liked that alot. Love to see it return.

* Some more color. MK always used to have atleast some GREEN, RED and YELLOW in their color pallette. These colors combined with black, grey, purple, orange and dark blue makes a good color pallette for the MK series. Looks better on the long term imo.

* Shao kahn talking while fighting. I like to hear Shao kahn or someone else with a similar voice talking while fighting again.

I agree with your sentiments about Mortal Kombat too...We just wish we could get more of a response. We post tweets to Ed Boon, Nether Realm Studios and WB Games Entertainment hoping that these ideas will get implemented into the next game. From what we researched the next Mortal Kombat isn't coming out until 2018. We don't know if that's true but if so, that should be plenty of time for the MK Staff and creators to implement the ideas as they're described. We wish there was something more we could do to make our ideas heard and seen but it seems like they're getting ignored. We put "7" female Kunoichi ninja characters in the "Fan Submission" section of this forum and have gotten very little in responses. It feels like we're doing this for nothing. We hope not.

Maybe Boon is not the right person to tweet to? Maybe he's too bizzy or doesn't care. If we look at MKx, i dont think Ed. cares alot what fans like or don't.

Also seems MKO not to be the place to discuss ideas or improvements. (Most times they don't reply or don't like the ideas) I have always find hard times to find other users on MKO that like the same aspects of MK. It looks like most don't care much about "Asian/ mystical" mytholgies within the MK series. I for one was always very interested in the old costumes, stages, music and more. Always been a big Kung fu fantasy fan. So MK was immediatly on my radar. Check out mksecrets and totalmk, they share more of our ideas.

I have also seen many interviews of NRS when MK9 was anounced. Besides Ed. Boon and some of the older devs. the young team doesn't seem very interested in the asian mytholgie aspect of the series. As they are given more space and creative input, it influances the series alot. The characters look more gothick inspired. Leather boots, clothes etc. Very western horror like. Something that bug's me ALOT. I could be wrong but it seems im not if we look at MKx.

This is not so topic related but i think it has influance on the ideas part. With this in mind all i can hope is that more fans scream for the klassic look. So MK looks closer to MK9 again with new stages and characters that fit the setting of the original timeline.

If you have some editing skills, maybe we could form a group to make visual ideas on YT? I remember NRS reacted on art or videos before. Once you have footage to see the differences or new ideas more ppl can relate to it. Some lack the imagination or seem to be less interested in tekst form. I am a game designer myself, if i can help i am willing to.

I've gotten ppl saying that NRS and Ed Boon won't take my ideas to fruition because one they're all in text and two I'm not a programmer or computer animation designer. I don't care about all that. I know that my ideas are superior and well-developed and thought out. And if the characters that we've described in detail were to be rendered correctly in the Unreal Engine 4 that Tekken 6 or Tag Team 2 use then Mortal Kombat would be the best fighting video game on the market right now. And that's not just me saying that. I think I've got several long term viable characters here that would be just as popular as Scorpion and Sub-Zero if not maybe even more popular for the franchise. And I don't see why Ed Boon, WB Games Entertainement, NRS doesn't want to have that for their franchise. I would like to develop the ideas even more and have the Asian themed game from MK1 and not have it ruined even more so with the gothic, goblins and monstered themed direction that Mortal Kombat is going to now.

It is not necessarily bad if MK has this type of theme; in my opinion Killer Instinct's unique characters are portrayed as diverse lot. That successful game does not solely rely on asian mythology and importantly, it brings individual character personalities to life. I love the old asian theme as well but I find myself more concerned about current MK plot/character induced stupidity, which breaks immersion.

I would keep the theme direction in terms of the mixed "Western" roster choices and average music. However, to address nostalgic mysticism concerns, I would champion the idea of focusing development on many new and remade classic "Asian" locations and stages in MK XI. Stage locations should satisfy mysticism fans more than fancy costumes or having NRS implement a forced quota system on having x amount of Eastern characters for each game.

I agree.

The problem is not western characters perse, in opposittion, i like to see diversety (aslong it fits the setting of the series) The problem i see is, when they make a ninja, or asian inspired character, it doesn't look "asian" inspired but "western" inspired instead. Look at scorpion's default costme for example, it looks very Hard rock/ metal inspired. Or they are massivley armored wich makes more sense for samurai's than ninjas. The same goes for many other aspects in MK recentley.

As for KI. I like Killer instinct. I think the designs and animations fit the setting of the series pretty well.
