Sindel's story FINALLY makes sense (spoilers)
11/27/2019 12:41 AM EST

Controversial apparently, but I do not get the backlash over the change to Sindel's story.

Jerrod was always portrayed as weak and frail, so who is the strength of Edenia? If she died in Edenia, how did Sindel end up in Jade's desert on EarthRealm? Why was it when she was resurrected by Quan Chi, she was already "evil" looking and intentioned.. all he did was resurrect her.

If Sindel's legacy in MK3 was Kitana's memory (remembering, she was less than 5 when Sindel died).. it makes sense that she remembers her mother differently to the reality. The original storyline was "nice", but left a lot of holes that didn't mesh.

Quan Chi as much as said he would bring Sindel back and under Kahn’s control (in more or less words).

But that aside, I still don’t agree here. It makes 0 sense, IMO, to completely change everything that had been established about her character. Also the extremely weak reasoning they gave for doing it. “Well we decided we didn’t like that her look and her personality didn’t match so... SURPRISE!!!!”

Please.

Also what about the plot holes this stupid idea has established? For example: In THIS timeline (as of MK 9 with the reboot which started this current timeline) Sindel’s sacrifice created a protective ward for Earth Realm. What happened to that? Suddenly didn’t happen? Well that’s a problem as far as this timeline’s story goes as it was an important plot point. And now they have three different people killing Jerrod. Was it Kahn? But wait, D’Vorah said she did it! No no no, it was Sindel right? You see? Doing this messes up the story points they’d already established in the current timeline.

It would be one thing if they were only changing things from the previous time line (as was the point of the reboot) but it’s quite another (and more than a bit sloppy) to change things you’d already played out in the new timeline. Again, the reason they gave is weak.

I don’t begrudge anyone their opinion on such matters... people like what they like. This is just my personal take on the situation.

Personally, I think her ending makes sense from her revenant's perspective. Quan Chi brainwashes everyone to believe what he wants them to.

Given how loosely and inconsistent the story is written to transverse and intersect between the characters' perspective and their revenant forms, I honestly dont believe that we should take the storyline seriously.

I can see Netherrealm retiring her for the next few MK games because of the backlash, only to retcon her again and possibly to undo all the shit they fucked up with her storyline. We truly won't know until the next MK game.

But he couldn't have brainwashed her until after he resurrected her. Suicide is a weak way out just because you don't want to marry someone.. if she is as strong a fighter as she appears, she would have died fighting Kahn.. she didn't.

Quan Chi controls revenants - she wasn't a revenant in MK3, so couldn't be controlled in that way. I think the problem is too many people like fairytales, which her story was. People treat MK: Annihilation as canon..

Plus NONE of these characters are in MK12 - that's what Ed said and the game suggests. This story has ended. There'll be a new tournament no doubt, new worlds, a new time.. but these characters are all dead.

Keep in mind within original MK3, She was brainwashed as well. Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi has memory manipulation abilities in addition to their knowledge of sorcery. So In Order influence their subjects, Memory Manipulation is important.

For Example with Bi-han, True he wasn't a moral or even a good person in life but when Quan Chi strip any good in him, any ounce of compassion, loyality or any sense of right or wrong in order to make him into Noob Saibot. Keep in Mind Lin Kuei are a guild of Assassins first and foremost, so Every Lin Kuei member had kill people before.

In Order for Shao Kahn to control Sindel and enter Earthrealm in full without her getting in the way, Altering her memories would be important by the Shadow Priests let by Shang Tsung within the Original MK3. Also Shao Kahn is a brutal dictator and due to his brutal nature, suicide would make sense, it is never a good option. Lets face it, Shao Kahn is a horrible person and Abusers like him never stop abusing others. Also Most Suicides are people that are at wits end and will not think rationally about how their death will effect others. Also it is never fun to talking people out of suicide.

Actually, she was (well undead anyway)... the Sindel in MK3 was brought back from the dead and fully under Kahn’s control. However, MK3 Sindel is irrelevant as the current Sindel is from the new timeline established in MK9. Quan Chi said “I will bring Sindel back to you and you will find her more...cooperative.” Quan is a necromancer (his specialty) so anyone he brings back from the dead would automatically be bound to his will.

As for why there was not a fight to the death between Sindel and Kahn, well I believe there are two reasons. 1. Kahn did not want Sindel’s death...so I doubt he’d have killed her. He wanted her as his queen, so more likely he’d have taken pleasure in breaking her spirit further and gaining her submission. 2. Sindel’s state of mind at the time. Think about it from her POV. Her husband was dead. Edenia’s best warriors had fallen in Mortal Kombat allowing Kahn to be well within rights (according to the Elder Gods rules) to claim Edenia as his and merge it with Outworld. He’d conquered her entire realm and took everything she held dear. Sindel was a broken woman and more than likely didn’t believe she had any chance of winning such a battle. Also there was Kitana to consider. What would Kahn do to Kitana had Sindel failed and died trying to take him out? So she decided not to oppose him and fell further into depression as time went on (which would explain why, eventually, even thoughts of Kitana couldn’t stop her from ending her life).

But yeah, in the new timeline, Quan brought Sindel back and so she was automatically in the necromancer’s thrall. So she was brainwashed from the jump.

They actually reveal her killer in her new timeline and it plays into the evil Sindel and her being a pawn.

Re-read her MK3 bio: Sindel once ruled the Outworld at Shao Kahn's side as his queen.
