Best guess, the temple is where Sindel's resurrection takes place, and that Shadow Priest who's also in the stage is part of the ceremony and Rain was either guarding him or Sindel's body. After all, they're both standing next to a very large altar, large enough to lay a person on top of.

hmmm rain is a mk 3 character but he and sheeva are the only ones i think have a possiblity of not makin the cut. If goro is not a boss i doubt sheeva will make it. As for rain hes an easter egg backround character at this point like the other post 2d characters, that and alota people dont like him. But your totally right maby it isnt a backround character thing and a story specfic thing (never even thought about sindels ressurection, good call)

Definitely a great catch!!! With the alter an all, makes me wonder if there's a possibility of a stage fatality on this stage, maybe the priest/Rain rips you apart sacrificing ya and he strips your pockets lol, could also envolve the glass window shattering in 3D and Raining glass on the victim. He must really be the watcher of Sindel's corpse for sure, yet this still don't mean he won't be playable and make a cameo I mean look at Cyrax MK3, Khan MK2/9, Tsung MK1/9, and Kitana MK9.
