Cyber-SubZero: One of the most pointless character changes ever?
The more I think about it, the more I feel CSZ truly was pointless.
Sub-Zero being the robotized one this time around didn't have much impact, because in the old games, we never knew Smoke all that well. He didn't have a personality, and there were no story modes where we not only could have gotten to know Smoke better, but also see the impact his automation had both on him and Sub-Zero. Had that been the case, reversing the roles in MK9 then might have had some impact.
CSZ was given Cyrax's "re-humanization" storyline, which left Cyrax himself reduced to a jobber after his automation. Infiltrating the enemy base after getting back his humanity is something Cyrax should have done. But I guess they couldn't give a B-player like Cyrax two chapters over a major one like Sub-Zero.
The only time I feel Sub-Zero's automation actually had some impact in the storyline, was when he encountered Noob Saibot and told him how they were both shelves of their former selves. But it's not like Kuai Liang also had to change to make Bi-Han's transformation anymore memorable.
In my opinion, neither Smoke nor Sub-Zero needed to be automated, anyway. If they really wanted a Cyber-SubZero, they should have just made him a non-canon "what if?" character like Human Smoke in UMK3/MKT. I did like his gameplay, design and fatalities, so I wouldn't have wanted CSZ removed from the game.
Rant over.

Making a whole thread to rant about a character nobody gives two shits about.

Yes, it was pointless. I said back then and this only proves it. There was no point to him and as far as I'm concerned, he never existed.

It's not one of the most, it is THE MOST POINTLESS character change in mk history.
Worst idea NRS ever pulled. Taking a mainstay and established character with arguably the best story progression, and fucked over Kuai Liang for 1 purpose only. Shock factor.
I hope we never see this happen again, the only cyborgs in the game should be Sektor, Cyrax, and I would prefer human smoke, but the alt outfits for all 3 should have human, and cyborg forms.
Story purposes though, i would prefer only Sektor and Cyrax be cyborg. I am sure Shadloo would agree.

What does this have to do with MKX?

To me, it was a bit of a fun. NRS planned to kill Sub Zero off in the story mode, anyway, knowing that in his spectre form, i.e. without the actual physique in biological sense, he would be adaptable to 'transformations', including reversion back to his humanoid form. Why not make an experiment, if only in an installment?

I see more this CBZ like a bonus for the fans of "hydro".
It would be cool if sub zero would have a alternate skin as cyber in mkx

I totally like to agree with this. NetherRealm had to know about all those mugens out there like Project, Chaotic etc. Hydro was an awesome character and they thought put him in the game, in a way. BUT....NetherRealm did it for shock value nothing more.

This. The fanmade Mugen cyberninja, based on the 90s comic character who looked like a more casual Sub-Zero.
I used Cyber Sub-Zero a lot, I like his dive kicks.

Looking back on it, there is one thing i never understood. Why was Cyber made into a completely different character with a completely different moveset while the likes of Cyrax, Sektor and even Reptile (in challenge tower) were just robot reskins?
OK, with cyber enhancements he can use bombs and divekicks, but his whole fighting style changed for no real reason. Does anyone think the movesets were swapped at some point in development? I ask because Sub's regular fighting styles have the thin ice sword and the methodical pattern combos, whereas Cyber has the thick ice sword (that looks the same as human form used in the previous 4 games) and his combos felt more 'random'.
The whole bit in the story where Raiden saves Smoke but just looks on as the cyber Lin Kuei takes Sub is really the worst part of that. It makes him look like a total dick when i don't think that was the intention.

It would have taken more work to make the human selves of Sektor and Cyrax significantly different from their robotic selves, gameplay-wise.
Only Sub-Zero and Scorpion can take more than one slot on the roster, or get more than one chapter in a story mode, after all.
