MK3 MK2 MK1 (MK2011) *Story Spoilers* longish post.
So, my favorite game of the "golden age" is MK3. So, since we didn't get alot of info about anything other than MK1-2 before release, I was interested to see how MK3 played out.
For staters, Shao Kahn did not steal all of earth's souls righty away, which, IMO, was much better.
I always thought MK3 could be a little more like an action movie rather then MK1's enter the dragon feel, and MK2's overall dark tone. In the opening scenes of the MK3 portion, you see the military, tarkatans with shotguns, explosions, dragons. It was everything I thought MK3 should be.
If you really think about it, the urban MK feel (like MK3) was never explored after MK3. All other games were set in temples or outworld, etc. I was very happy to see how the whole "Ninjas and monsters invade a big city" thing turned out.
The only thing that bugged me about MK3(2011), is that, unlike the original arcade game, they took out all non-urban stuff.
The Pit 3 is not in the game.
The Soul Chamber was only in MK2's part of the story, even though it was introduced in MK3, (Might have something to do with MKSM)
Motaro's lair... Well, it would be stupid to have his lair but not him anyway.
Hell, another arena that appears before MK3 in story mode.
Still, they did it well. I just wish they left in some of the fantasy stuff.
Now, on to MK2.
If there is anything I study more then Greek Mythology, it's MK mythology. Kind of a dumb thing to be an expert on, but I know there are many other MK mythologers on his site. So, the one thing about MK2 is; it was the first time the "other realms" were explored.
Really only slightly talked about in MK1, we still thought Shang was top of the food chain back then, but in MK2 we were introduced for the first time to, the most memorable ralm in MK other then Earth, Outworld.
The one thing about MK2's part of the story that bugged me? It didn't feel like there were any stakes really. Despite the bad witing, MKSM handled it better. In MK2, our heroes journey to the other realm, and fight in a tournament to ensure the survival of Earthreal forever, I felt like in MK2(2011) you didn't feel that weight. I understand it was too short of a story to explore ALL of MK2, but it just felt really weak.
Other then that, everything else was okay. I geuss we will neer see what truly happened in MK2 all fleshed out, So far we have seen it done non-canon, and with Raiden tanpering with the timeline. Oh well, it's a shame to see what is generally accepted as the best MK game ever get handled kinda poorly.
Okay so, MK1.
Almost perfect. We got to go back to a simple tournament with rules, on an island in between realms, with one big bad guy: Shang Tsung.
Why is it "almost" perfect? Why are people who do not belong in MK1 in MK1? It would even be more acceptable to see people who don't belong in MK2 in MK2, but MK1? The reason I say that is: MK1 was a small tournament held to give Earthrealm one more chance (after all, it was number 10) to defend itself. I understand it doesn't really effect anything to have a few extra people there, but it still made me a little dissapointed. Also, it would have been hard to have MK1's portion of the story told with seven people, but still. Another thing being, actually, there were more then just post MK1 charactes. There were random dudes and dudettes standing around like they were in he tournament (we never see any of them fight), It seems this idea of the tournament being bigger and containing less important fighters came from the MK movie, they have drawn ideas from the movies before.
Other then that, it was spot on. The locations, the feeling of. I say this again, "Enter the Dragon, and movies like that in general.
All in all, it was cool to see MK1-3 revisited.
If anyone actually read that whole thing, good for you.
Now, give your opinion, and make sure to make it as long, if not longer, than mine.
