I found this particular quote from EGM interesting:
"Certain characters are fast, others are power characters that don't rely on combos, others will be more throw oriented-we really wanted to make sure that each character felt unqiue."
That quote is from Lead Designer John Edwards and it appears on page page 37 in the right hand column next to Sub Zero.
Did I read that right?
This type of uniqueness of character has NEVER been a staple of MK. Even in 3D, where most fighting games typically have characters with unique moves and styles, MK never had any real differences in characters. Sure, Kano and Jax had about two more throws in MK:DA than anyone else, but this??
Characters that don't rely on combos? Throw oriented characters? I have to wonder what Edwards is talking about though, considering that everything we saw from E3 indicated that every character was fast and used combos.
What do you think? Do you see the next MK being like what John Edwards said? After all, we've seen a lot of unique animations for characters and Ed Boon has also said that making characters unique is a focus, but I never thought that it would be to the extent that Edwards speaks of. Or do you think that this is just mid-development hype that won't pan out in the final product?
Perhaps most importantly, do you WANT unique characters as Edwards describes them? Power characters, throw oriented characters, fast characters, characters that don't rely on combos etc?

A heavy throw character is what really confuses me. Who would they give that to? No MK character really communicates "I mostly perform throws" to me. Kano? Stryker? The Shokans?

A heavy throw style was already seen with the Wrestling and Judo styles of MKDA.

Yeah, but the Judo style belonged to Kenshi and Smoke, a sword fighter and an assassin. Doesn't compute. But it made sense because they had a limited amount of fighting styles and they had to distribute two to everyone.
Now there's no excuse.

Two or three lame tosses does not a "heavy throw style" make. Wrestling was the biggest fucking letdown in Deadly Alliance. If Hsu Hao was rocking powerbombs, piledrivers, and suplexes for real, he might actually have been a little popular instead of one of the most hated characters in the franchise.

Apparently they had noone proficient in Khapsagay or Nadaam Böke. Well, he does have wrestling of some sorts as I recall it and Shuai Jiao, which is the fundamental wrestling basis of most martial arts around China.

Jax, Stryker & Sheeva sound about right.A heavy throw character is what really confuses me. Who would they give that to? No MK character really communicates "I mostly perform throws" to me. Kano? Stryker? The Shokans?

Hsu Hao would be a perfect example of a heavy throw character.

And as for each character being unique and different from each other to me is very important, lack of individuality in fighting style was the whole reason I wasn't a big fan of MK vs. DC.
