Weapon Use in MK9?

posted07/07/2010 02:36 PM (UTC)byBefore we begin, no, this is NOT a thread about adding a weapon style to characters as in MKDA - MKA. I don't believe all of the characters should have weapons.
I'm talking more of an MK3 approach to weapons:
I've noticed in the videos that have been released so far, that there have been weapons included in some of the basic combo hits. These were most notable on Sub-Zero and Nightwolf (hell, even Kung Lao delivered a particularly brutal blow to his opponent with his hat at the end of a combo). I thought that was cool... but then I noticed that while doing her combos (except for a soaring sai special at the end) Mileena's sai were not implemented at all. Which got me to thinking.
Should the characters that have "signature weapons" (Kitana, Mileena, Jade, Kabal, Stryker etc etc..) be able to use them in combos ala MK3? I think yes. I think it adds a look of style to the combos. Already the ones I've seen with Sub and Nightwolf look great.
The point is that for some of these characters, their weapons are as much apart of the character as special moves or specific costume elements.
When you think about Mileena.. one of the first things that comes to mind (beside her hideous facial features) is her signature use of the Sai.
Same with Kitana, her fans are always mentioned as being among her best assets.
People saw Mavado for the first time with hookswords and were immediately like "Hey!! Those are Kabal's!" before anything about his story was even revealed.
So I'm not asking for a "weapons stance" in the game. I want only those who have had signature weapons from their debut, to be able to use them in their combos like in MK3. This is a limited part of the roster and shouldn't be hard to do.
Also, if it is done... Jade's staff needs to be the classic one glowing with TK power. :P
Your thoughts?

I'd want that... also, Jade's staff and Baraka's blades... Raiden's electric staff maybe... and Stryker's nightstick...

I agree, I liked what I saw in terms of Sub's sword so far, so why not have it for all the characters known for having particular weapons? Sounds good.

watching nightwolf I'm pretty sure MK3 style weapons are already in, same with subzero and his ice sword. I think we're good in that department.

Well i thought so too... until I saw Mileena's sai were not used in her combos, only as the soaring sai special move. Now, while I'm aware that it is still early.. I'm betting they showed these eight characters because they were the most complete of the bunch so far... which is why I'm concerned about Mileena.

Mileena does use her sais at the end of a combo. Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0nWxrqh7i0, at 4:40...the quality of the video isn't great, but she definitly stabs Cage in the shoulders/back. Kung Lao has a similar move where he stabs and inbeds his hat after a combo. EDIT: Ah, just saw that you pointed out the Kung Lao hat stab earlier.

Scorpion uses his swords during kombat I now I saw that in the game vid. Thought that was cool I don't mind if they incorporate them this way but separate weapon styles hell no.

Yeah! i was thinking the same!!! It ́s kind of disapointing seeing Mileena barely use her sais. I wish she would use them all the time...

Signature weapons in attacks : Yes
(Kano, Kung Lao, Mileena, Jade, Scorpion, Stryker, Kitana, Nightwolf)
Although I like Sub-Zero making weapons from ice.
Arbitrary weapons for everyone : No (Ermac having an ax)

@ red5iver: Actually I did see that one, although I didn't mention it because it kind of looks like a new air special move to me rather then a jumping basic attack. However I could be wrong.
@ silverhairedghost: I don't want weapon stances either, that's why I started this thread with that little note ;). However I think that weapons incorporated (for only signature weapon users) as they were in MK3 is perfect. And I agree, Scorpion's sword use was cool.
@ Kamionero: Ah! So I'm not crazy after all... someone else noticed too. Or does that just mean both of us are crazy and everyone else is ok? ... great, deep thoughts the rest of the night now. Perfect. -_-
@ Chilly-McFreeze: Absolutely agree. Only the characters who've had signature weapons from their introduction. No one else. (unless they make a new character.. but that doesn't seems to be only at a "maybe" status right now as far as characters go.)

I think that'd be fucking AMAZING!
I remember playing MK:Trilogy as Jade (of course)
and seeing her staff glow purple as I did one of her long
amazing combos. :)

Hahaha nah, i think everyone feels this way... characters like Kitana are defined by their weapons!!!
Like I said in a different thread, I dont necessarily have to have the gameplay to be affected by the weapons (more damage, larger range.. altho ideally they would) but I think it ́s a must to keep the game even borderline realistic to have characters like Mileena and Kitana use their weapons all or most of the time during gameplay. They dodged this issue in mkDA thru Armageddon by having the weapon stance (which most ppl dont want back, myself included) and in MKvsDC... i honestly dont know cause i havent played it hahaha.
But i think it takes away from the game to see these characters weapon-less... it takes away from the credibility of the game and I as a player would feel gyped!!!
It ́s different for characters like Nightwolf and Sub Zero who create their weapons with their powers, or Kung Lao whose weapon is not really ment to be wielded during combat... but the female ninjas, Baraka and Kano would absolutely need their weapons, i think, available for other than special moves.

I agree with Kamio... Since the MK team are trying to make each character feel unique, they should let the girls use their weapons more during combos...
I agree. I also think that, over time, some characters that were given weapons after MK3 have pretty much become known for those weapons as well. Cyrax is pretty much known for having a lightsaber-type device. Kano is known for his love of knives. I'd even like to see Liu Kang or Cage whip out nunchucks in the middle of some combos. And what about Raiden and his staff?
So yeah, I would like to see a few more characters incorporate this the way we have already seen Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Nightwolf incorporate it.

I might be the only guy on the other side of the fence here. Im actually very fond of the weapon kombat in MK. If u think about it, there has been an official "weapon stance" since MK4, weapons were implemented in the combos and win poses of MK3, and the new fighters in MK2 had weapons: Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Baraka, even Shao Kahn had a hammer (Jax didnt have a weapon in MK2, but his MK3 arms are his weapon now) MK1 had 7 fighters, 4 of which now have a weapon associated with them (Kano, Raiden, SubZero, Scorpion) Weapon Kombat was just another thing that set MK apart (and above) street fighter. It doesnt have to be as drastic as flashing the Name of the weapon as you whip it out tho.
In MKvsDC, Baraka was able to whip out his blades and Deathstroke could pull out his sword and fight with it. I really liked this, but I didnt think this was very fair to the rest of the characters. Im pretty sure Baraka will be able to do this in the new MK as well (as he should)
I agree from watching the videos, it does look like we are going back to the MK3 style where the weapons are only implemented in combos, throws, fatalities, and win stances (minus baraka probably, who should be able to "snikt" on command). But if u really stop and think about it, there are only JUST A FEW characters who don't have a weapon attached to their personality: namely Sonya, Liu Kang, and Johnny Cage (all from MK1)
Here are my ideas for those 3 fighters.. and just a few more examples (IF weapon kombat was totally coming back)
Liu Kang has had the same exact move set since MK2, just let him use his nunchaka! LoL.. its very Bruce Lee of him
Sonya can have something military style. Maybe one of those expanding Night sticks ( http://media.photobucket.com/image/night%20stick/waynehead05/Funny/NightStick.gif ) maybe give it a pink electric charge, kinda like sandra bullock in Demolition Man.
Cage, i have no clue. What do douchebag actors use? He can whip out some brass knuckles, or just pull out his oscar trophy. haha he is supposed to be the comic relief anyway. He had that staff in MK the movie, but Jade and Raiden already have a staff
Kung Lao can weild his hat in his hand, much like Captain America.
Sektor/Cyrax pulse blades fit them perfect.
Ermac should have a TK weapon instead of just a basic axe. I think he had the axe in MKD as homage to the axe that was shown in his and Scorpion's combos in UMK3. He can have a TK sword or axe, or a TK "fist-blade" like Psylock uses in Xmen.
Noob Saibot - a sythe made of shadow energy. just like in MKSM
Quan Chi should pull out a green glowing femur bone. LoL. It could have a blade on the end, or a spiked ball, or a skull. That would match his special move and his intro videos in MK5 & MK6, as well as pay homage to his MK4 Leg rip and beat u Fatality.

I think Kano should have his knives too but I don't know about the nunchaku... It was more like a weapon style that fit them but I don't think Kang or Cage should use them mid-fight, they already have their defining characteristics which is brutal hand-to-hand fighting...

nightwolf using energy hatchets and daggers, sub using an icicle sword, scorpion using his harpoon tip to slash and stab, mileena stabbing a sai in a shoulder blade, etc., yeah i would say signature character weapons during combos is an assured thing.
well kabal needs his hookswords, mileena needs her sia
and of course when it comes to weapons the most important character in this catagory is the the man with built in weapons ,baraka.
i think he will defently need 2 fighting styles like he did in mk vs dc, he was the only (mk)character in that game that had that,
i kinda want to keep it like.

I'm liking how this looks in the gameplay videos. Sub-Zero and Nightwolf being the highlights. I wouldn't like it for all characters though. A balance of charcters with and without weapons will make the roster seem more diverse.

I love the way they're making everybody's punches and combos visually unique. Some people pull or create weapons, some don't...Sektor even shoots a little jet out of his palm.
This seems like the perfect way to go from now on to me. I never liked every single character having a weapon fighting style before anyway. Most of them always ended up feeling generic.

Looks good for the moment, will be nice to see more though.
If they work it like MK3 where you can combo into weapon specials that would be really good. Although as people have said it'd be nice if some characters were able to use their weapons more.
What about having some characters having 1 or 2 auto-combo's like MK3 that incorporate their weapon? Eg. Kitana/Mileena.
If they allow Kitana to have a fan uppercut and fan swipe that can be linked or combo'd into, i think i'd be very happy,
