... well not like I used to be. I'll always be a fan of the classics (MK1 - MKT) and somewhat of the 3D era (MK4 - MKA). I feel like one of those fat Star Wars nerds who now only acknowledges the original trilogy. Well, I can't blame them! The 3D era is to me is how Star Wars fans view the prequel trilogy. So yeah, starting with MK9 we can call that the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

.

This is the only MK site I have an account with... this place is unfortunately a pathetic shadow of its former self, so probably only 3 people at best will view this over the next 8 years, none of whom would even be employees of NRS. It's sad, really, what happened to MKO... but I've got no willingness to create an account on some active website like reddit or some shit, so here's my rant.

.

Let’s break down why Mortal Kombat’s lore - especially since the 2011 reboot (MK9) - has gone completely off the rails, and why Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) feels like a bloated, lore-insulting multiverse mess.

.

The Core Problem: Time Travel Broke Everything. MK9 starts the rot. Time travel reset the board, but only to re-tell old stories in worse ways. This rewrites history, kicking off a rebooted timeline. Characters die, come back, die again, turn evil, come back again... rinse and repeat. The original timeline was messy, yes, but it had linear progression. There was a clear arc from MK1 to Armageddon. Characters grew, betrayed, died, and evolved in a (mostly) coherent way. The stakes mattered, and fans could follow the journey.

.

MKX & MK11: The Lore Gets Dumber. MKX introduces a "new generation" but doesn’t develop them well. MK11 Introduces Kronika, a time goddess, and fully jumps into multiverse/time-travel absurdity. Past versions of characters fight future versions and the story becomes a loop of contradictions, plot armor, and soft reboots.

.

MK1 was supposed to be a clean slate with Fire God Liu Kang crafting a "peaceful" new era. But instead, we get yet another rebooted timeline, but still crammed with legacy characters. The “new era” collapses under the weight of decades of messy lore and no true commitment to character development or fresh stakes. Why care about this Sub-Zero when there are 5 more across timelines?

.

As previously admitted, classic MK used to be messy, but at least it was charming. Now it’s a multiverse soup where nothing sticks and everything’s reversible. Characters exist to fight, die, reboot, and cameo.

.

Most people want to point the finger at MK1 and I don't blame them, especially with those hideous character outfits... but MK9 was the real sin. MK9 wasn’t a rebirth. It was a panic button. It was riddled with cheap nostalgia. It just remixed old events instead of writing new consequences. It had character regression, not progression. Everyone went back to square one emotionally and morally. Raiden’s “visions” were a lazy plot device to force changes with no logic.

.

So yeah, it wasn’t MK1 (2023) that broke the story. It was MK9 that broke its spine. MKX and MK11 were just dragging the limp body around while Kronika taped multiverse bandages over the mess.

And my god, I can see part of the reason people have abandoned this fucking place. I clearly put white space between my paragraphs and this piece of shit smudges everything together. What idiot coded this?

I'm with you BS. The klassics are the flame in my heart and so I dedicated my website to them. I'm not going to condemn this site though. It is a shell of its' former glory but has left a tremendous legacy, often sparking my passion for the series. The friction of the community once here gave me drive. Nothing lasts forever, but the flame will always kontinue to burn.

Yep. Coming out of a LONG message board retirement to agree with this. I literally accidentally clicked on my bookmark for MK5.org on my 20+ year old laptop that I found in my attic (that somehow still works...they don't make 'em like this anymore). I grew up with and loved the OT. Hated the 3d era but stuck by it since it was MK. LOVED MK9 but hated the direction they started going in after that, and then "MK1"...ugh. This trash not only turned me off to Mortal Kombat forever, but to gaming in general as well. My old ass is 42 so gaming really isn't much of a priority or care for me anyway. But I always, ALWAYS got excited for MK.
Story being garbage aside, the fact that MK1 was an unfinished trash pile with bare bones content and a Fortnite microtransaction approach and we were just supposed to accept it for what it was...no thanks. Sadly this series is dead to me now. You aren't alone in your feelings on this.

Shit, I was just bitching about the story (which I watched on YouTube). They have micro transactions now? FUCK. Definitely glad I passed on MK1. And I thought unlocking skins in MK11 was dreadful... now this shit?

I totally agree. I stuck around because MK still excited me, even though the games were mediocre and life/school took priority. I still had my art (MK fakes) though.

I'm so fortunate to have grown up in the 90s... I literally feel like I went through the golden era of gaming. What kids have these days is a over saturation of shitty games.

At least the classics will always be there, even if modern MK has gone in a direction that we don't like.

Nothing is going to get fixed as long as the IP is handcuffed to WB though.

It really is painful to see what has become of this franchise. (Ironically) after saving the series from limbo, WB have now most likely sent it back there due to their meddling, greed and incompetence. Of course, Boon and co. have done their fair share of damage themselves, as it is clearly evident that Ed himself has little involvement with actual development these days and is merely hanging around like a disinterested lost soul in his role as simply being the face/hype man of Mortal Kombat.

.

Mortal Kombat has, quite simply, lost its identity. A large part of it, I believe, to be its reluctance to futher embrace the things that inspired its creation in the first place - namely the love of 60's, 70's, 80's martial arts flicks. A reason, I believe, is due to today's "politically correct" atmosphere. Without this, MK is now embracing more "Hollywood" trends (which, of course started when WB bought the franchise and gradually moved the team and company from Chicago to California.) Because of this, MK has since had an identity crises. It has become a mishmash clusterfuck that doesn't know what it wants to be.

.

Story-wise? Hoo boy, I could go on this tangent for hours so I'll (try) to keep this brief: I hate it. I loathe it. I despise it with every being of my soul. 11 was ground zero for the shitshow we have now. Even though the concept has been around for a long time, the exploding "popularity" of multiverse garbage over the last few years has been a cancer on all media. Of course, you can thank the wave of talentless Californian writers - when they're shoehorning their political views in not-so-subtle ways - they are hankering to get a taste of that multiverse pie simply because it's a current trend with complete disregard on how it'll affect the quality of the story.

.

Now, despite all this, I'm not going so far as to say I'm done with MK. It will forever hold a special place in my heart and all the memories - from my first Fatality to being extremely hyped watching the first movie in theatres as a kid - will never go away. My collection of games and merch will never go away. My love for its characters and lore will never go away. I still have faith that Mortal Kombat can be fixed. If (hopefully when) a lot of its problems are sorted, you can be sure I'll be there waiting, excited to experience the next chapter.
