Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (2d Sequel) idea...
04/23/2012 07:36 AM EST
basically all i'm suggesting here is a sequel to the awesome beat-em up mk: shoalin monks game, only this time around the gameplay should be brought to us on a 2d plane... which would bring in better graphics, more accurate attacking, platforming, no camera angle issues, and probably a helluva lot more fun!!

also, for 2 player coop (local)... the camera could work just like the
"super mario bros x" game does, by seamlessly going from a single screen to a split-screen dependent upon weather players are within close proximity to one another or far away from each other.. you can check out footage of it on youtube, it's pretty awesome!

A sequel for Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monk was in the works, entitled Mortal Kombat: Fire & Ice, hinting at the focus on Scorpion and Sub-Zero instead of the Shaolin duo and presumably the new threats of Mortal Kombat 3 and 4. It is obvious that the graphics would be staggering compared to the predecessor anyway, but as MK is about "flashiness" and gore to some extent, greater graphics couldn't hurt anyone (except the opponents).
While your idea could flesh out into a worthwhile download game, it doesn't make sense to water down and simplify the gameplay just for the graphics that are decent already and ought to become even greater with the new generation of systems. You don't fuck with Mario, you know!

well... after all that you've said, your basically telling me that what they did with the latest mortal kombat game installment was a f*** up by bringing the game franchise back onto a 2d fighting plane and that the better gameplay and graphics weren't worth the translation... [rolls eyes]...

but hey, your entitled to your own opinion... so if you'd rather have another sequel with not the best graphics, not as tight gameplay mechanics, and the same remaining camera angle issues from mk:sm... that having the game play in 2d would remedy... then by all means good for you!

also, i didn't f*** with mario... nintendo did, ever since the n64 came out, mario hasn't been the same since!

He didnt say anything about mk2011, he was about shaolin monks, an ADVENTURE game. I think 3d worked well for it, much better than a 2d plane would. But the idea is not bad. I would still like to see a 2d mk adventure game though, perhaps co tinuing the mkm series, and have one for each characters, such as mkm: scorpion and such. Bring the mk9 gameplay, but fleshed out into whole levels, in the vain of smb, but with alt less emphasis on platforming.

I know what he was referring too... i was just trying to make a comparison in that last example... you know?...

"mk: armageddon has "3d movement" side stepping and mk: 2011 has "2d movement" up, down, left, right with no side stepping?... it's a big difference!"

also from my point a view, bringing the main mk series back to the 2d fighting plane was probably the smartest thing they could of ever done! (kudos goes to the street fighter IV team for showing everyone in america that 2d fighters still have a place in the gaming market)... and if your just like my buddy who posted above us, and actually think mk: deadly alliance, mk: deception, or mk: armageddon were better games with their 3d movement over traditional 2d fighters (mk1,mk2,umk3,mkt,mk:2011)... then i feel sorry for both you!... as you guys probably weren't born in the 80's and in the arcades up through the early 90's (like myself)... because the folks that weren't around then, seem to all think that 2d gameplay makes a game inferior, while as far as beat-em ups, platformers, and fighters are concerned, real gamers truly know that 2d is the only way to go for those game types...

also, here is one last comparison i'd like to mention on an action beat-em up game that went from 2d to 3d...

teenage mutant ninja turtles - turtles in time (2d)
to
teenage mutant ninja turtles - turtles in time re-shelled (3d)

converting that game from 2d to 3d was the worst translation of a game i've ever seen!!... as it took out all of the graphical charm that the 2d sprites had provided and replaced them with lifeless, unmemorable 3d polygons with that godawful cumbersome 3d movement... which plagued most of the game series that went from the 2d to 3d crossover...

games that went from great to bad in the 2d-3d crossover...

- super mario bros
- castlevania
- ninja gaiden
- mortal kombat
- sonic the hedgehog

and every other game that started off as a great 2d game then went to a sh** 3d brainless button mashing game ala ninja gaiden especially!...

lastly, i'll never ever forgive game developers for jumping onto the 3d gameplay wagon and leaving their great 2d version game counterparts to die in the background!.. as it was the biggest mistake that real gamers all over the world had ever witnessed!

I dont think you get what i was saying. Saying i liked 3d adventures game, doesnt mean i liked the 3d mk games (which are not that total bad). They are two totally diff genres. To add, i evensaid it would be nice to have a 2d mk adventure game...geez...

Graphics have not been that much of an issue for a long time in gaming. I did not mention Mortal Kombat 9 (2011) at any point and I stated that I would rather keep the MK:SM mechanics "While your idea could flesh out into a worthwhile download game." The camera issues weren't much a catastrophe and NeRdS could certainly do something about them today.
As for Super Mario, bringing the three-dimensional graphics was inevitable with Mario anyway and Super Mario Galaxies have received excellent ratings. Despite all that, they are going back to the roots with the New Super Mario Bros. series. What's wrong with 3D Super Marios?

But comparing my second paragraph doesn't apply to Mortal Kombat 9 or the fighting games in the first place! And to clarify, I was with MK from the early beginning and while I was, there is no reason to bring the age card in this thread. That's unnecessary, that is age racism, racism is flaming and flaming is prohibited here resulting in a ban after repeated instances.
I had played numerous TMNT titles including Turtles in Time in NES and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Back from the Sewers in Game Boy in the 90 ́s and also tried the Re-Shelled trial version in Xbox 360, but you don't compare the mediocre Re-Shelled to Shaolin Monks. You are derailing your own thread from proposing a sequel idea to mocking young people and people with different, justified visions. That does not fly here.

hey, apologize for the "big rant" i previously posted yesterday ... wasn't having a good day and just ended up letting it all out in the wrong place (which is never good)... probably because of the nasty weather and not being able to get outside at all... anyway...

i really wish i could get directly in touch with game creators though...
because 2d games are very dear to some gamers and with today's technology they could be even more amazing and impressive...

i also do think it's awesome (Nouns), that you agree that it would be a good idea if they did create a 2d game (similar to mk:sm) as a psn / xbla dlc title... now that would rock!!

@ Zmoke
just to clarify and set things straight, don't forget that you took the 1st couple of shots at me... considering 2d gameplay to be "watered down" and "simplified"... those are both very much insults to a classic gamer in my eyes, and felt that it's only right to defend one's video game beliefs and fight back... only i took it a little further than necessary as i was obviously having a bad day... but all is good with me now and hopefully all is good with u as well

Oh yes, but that was *my opinion* and criticism can easily be seen offensive from the standpoint of a creator, even when it shouldn't.
I didn't mean to insult – by any means – however. I would most likely buy this Shaolin Monks sequel made by your specific gameplay mechanics, truly I would, but at this point I would rather stick to the current gameplay mechanics of Shaolin Monks that proved quite fantastic. The both would be good, but the predecessor's gameplay would be better than what you presented, in my eyes. Everyone has got a taste of their own.
We're cool, it's not a big issue, bro. It's always sunny after a storm. smile

i disagree, i really liked MK shaolin monks as a 3D game. also the graphics looked good enough for that time. i agree on a sequel on shaolin monks tho.
still i prefer the 3D arena, gives us more to do and explore. shaolin monks was a really great beat em up, a sequel in this time is a no doubt succes..

when it comes to a MK fighting game i prefer the 2D game-play. but thats basically because the game-play. not everything is better in 2D... imma big fan of 2D beat em ups as well, but sometimes 3D is also fun. like the spike out series for instance.

Same MKSM game play with a fixed 2d camera is a good idea imo. the camera didn't rotate that much anyway.
