Alright guys here's how it goes. It's pure fantasy, but I think that the next MK game should be a Shaolin Monks style game (Actually Shaolin Monks 2) focusing again on two characters: The Great Kung Lao and...wait for it...Shang Tsung! Hear me out and be patient as this is a long read.

Story:

The game would tell the story of how Kung Lao and Shang Tsung trained and grew up together under the tutelage of the Shaolin preparing for the Mortal Kombat Tournament and how they became best friends (imagine a Liu Kang/Kung Lao dynamic in their relationship), with Kung Lao always being the patient virtuous student and Shang Tsung always questioning his masters and their ways, and always feeling that he is being held back.

In the meantime a young God, Raiden, is appointed as the protector of Earth by the Elder Gods and has to choose who will represent Earthrealm in the Tournament. After Raiden gets impressed by Kung Lao and Shang Tsung's skills, he chooses the two young monks and the three of them begin their quest to save the Realm of Earth from the forces of outworld by participating in the Tournament held in Shao Kahn's island. Kung Lao and Shang Tsung have to overcome the temptations and threats looming in the huge island and prove to the Gods and themselves that Raiden made the right choice.

While on the island, one of Shao Kahn's warriors, Quan Chi, approaches Shang Tsung and fills his soul with envy and jealousy, as he tells him that the Thunder God favours Kung Lao to win the tournament and that Raiden brought him to the Tournament just to "fill the spot". Shang Tsung refuses to believe any of it, but Quan Chi shows him Raiden giving advice and training Kung Lao while on the island, and asks: "Why would your God choose to train and give advice to only one of his warriors? Why was Kung Lao always favoured over you, even back at the Temple? Maybe they see your true power and they don't want you to reach your full potential...Maybe...They know you will become too powerful for them to control, join us, and reach your true potential"! Then Quan Chi leaves and Shang Tsung, infuriated goes to find Kung Lao and Raiden. He finds Kung Lao and after some strong words, the two almost come to blows before Raiden intervenes and stops the nonsense. He rebukes them both and asks what happened. No one gives an answer, and Raiden says that they have to stick together as they are the only hope that Earthrealm has, and the two warriors make peace at least for the moment.

The Tournament progresses and Shang Tsung has to face Quan Chi. The battle is immense, but during the fight Quan Chi, continues to infuse Shang Tsung's heart, soul and mind with poisonous lies. Shang Tsung wins, but chooses to show Mercy on Quan Chi and doesn't Finish Him. He leaves the arena, without celebration, shoving Kung Lao with his shoulder on his way out.

Raiden goes to have words with Shang Tsung but he is nowhere to be found. He searches the island with Kung Lao, and they find him in a secret cave talking with someone. As they get closer the only thing that they hear is Shang Tsung saying "My soul is yours" before a blinding green light comes out of the cave. They barge in but there is no one there, except Gorbak, the King of the Shokan who acts as a bodyguard to Shao Kahn. Raiden asks Gorbak what was happening here but the Shokan instead of answering advices Raiden to "take the meat sack and leave my lair", resulting in a fierce fight between Gorbak and Kung Lao and Raiden. The Shaolin and Raiden prove to be too much for the Shokan as he falls to their might. He tells them that Shang Tsung has sold his soul to Shao Kahn and that he now fights for Outworld. Before leaving the lair Gorbak looks at Kung Lao and says: "Even if you win this tournament, which you won't, don't rejoice, but live in fear as my son, Goro is already training for the next tournament, and he will rip you apart"!

The next day Shao Kahn gathers the remaining warriors to make an announcement: "Outworld now has a new warrior among their ranks, a warrior who is sure to bring many victories...A warrior born and trained on Earthealm, but made in Outworld...Enter, mighty Sorcerer...Shang Tsung!" Raiden and Kung Lao gaze at Shang Tsung, speachless, as he is presented by the Emperor in his new clothes, bearing the symbols of Shao Kahn and Outworld.

The Tournament progresses and Kung Lao continues to pick up victories for Earthrealm while Shang Tsung claims souls for Outworld. The two of them inevitably face each other in the finals of the Mortal Kombat Tournament with the fate of the world hanging between the former brothers.

So that's it guys, I hope you liked the story.

Gameplay

The game could be played either solo, or co-op. When playing solo you can choose what path you want to take and it would have different endings depending on what character you choose. When playing Co-op you play as both heroes. Depending on the story. For example in the early stages you play as both Shang Tsung and Kung Lao, but later on the story when they part ways, Kung Lao would have Raiden with him, and Shang Tsung would have Quan Chi with him. In the final fight, both players can face off against each other.

The early stages would be in the temple while the latter stages, would be on the Island. The Island would be sandbox-like, you can go to certain areas to advance the story etc, have side quests, find hidden treasures and paths but when you finish the game it would become open-world with you being able to choose any of the four Characters: Kung Lao,Shang Tsung, Raiden and Quan Chi and explore the island, which would be filled with different enemy types (Shao Khan's guards, Tarkatans, Edenian Knights etc).

So that's it guys, that's my idea for the Next MK game. I hope you liked it and I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

For Rain (or a random arena) an ocean in northern Edenia with many waterspouts, near and far in the backdrop.
