For this thread, I'm gonna look at the characters in MKD, and try and judge how likely they are to make the jump to MK7.

Sub Zero
He's getting a lot of build up the last two games. If Sub Zero doesn't become MK's main hero soon, he will at least go on to big things. Subby will make MK7, and every other MK after for that matter.

Scorpion
I'm not keen on him, but too many fans (and Ed Boon) love him for him not to appear.

Raiden
Another MK icon, and the new "Dark Raiden" storyline is now taking off. This is too interesting, and involves many characters, he'll stick around.

Noob Smoke
Revealed as the older Sub Zero, Noob's become too important to be dropped for now. Smoke could go either way really, but he does have fan support in his favour.

Mileena
She's finally developed as a character on her own terms, evolving beyond the Kitana fued. Plus, if her ending's true, she's now deceiving everyone pretending to be Kitana.

Baraka
I think Millena's ending looks more likely, so Baraka may sit out next game. But even if he does, we've not seen the last of the dentists nightmare.

Li Mei
She defied the odds (and her MKDA ending) and came back to MKD. I beleive the MK team like her enough for her to return, and develop further.

Ermac
Arguably MK's most improved classic. He seems to do most of the work in rescuing the heroes, so I see him making the cut next game alongside the good guys.

Nightwolf
His storyline didn't really involve anyone else. I think he's OK, but I think he'll be sitting out, possibly as an easy MK casualty, sadly.

Jade
Either helping out Kitana or Sindel, Jade seems likely to make the jump to MK7. The fact she became MK's representing poster girl for that cheesy "sexiest game girl" thing helps too.

Sindel
She was important to MKD, but I think a returning Kitana is more likely to take over from her next time round. Could be wrong here though.

Kabal
His comeback was considered weak, but the Black Dragon have become a big deal again in the MK world. Depends whether fans will give him another chance, I would personally.

Bo Rai Cho
I don't want him, but he came back from MKDA despite many fans against it. If he has to return, please lose the unfunny farting and puking crap.

Liu Kang
Another one I don't really like. But I think enough people, both fans and staff will push for a ressurected Liu to return once more. I'm hoping he doesn't but have a feeling he will.

Kenshi
MKDA's most popular newbie. Didn't really set the world alight this time, so he could well miss a game or two. He'll be back someday though.

Tanya
Her most important role this game was basically as Jade's whipping girl. I see her missing next game, and hopefully every other.

Ashrah
I think she's dull, but Ashrah's arguably MKD's most popular newcomer. Like Kenshi before, I think this guarantees her a place next game.

Hotaru
Killed off in two characters endings, his chances do not look good. But, if the positive fan response is there, Hotaru could cheat death and return.

Havik
Another popular newcomer, and I think he's very likely to return. There are too many possibilities for a Chaotic character to not stick around for a while at least.

Dairou
I really can't make up my mind on this one. To be on the safe side, I'll say 50/50 for Mr Klingon forehead and his silly looking moves.

Kira
The Black Dragon are big again, and she's had pretty good fan response so far. With or without Kabal, I think Kira will be here for the time being, provided she gets original moves.

Darrius
Hard to say, as he's not really involved with the main plotline. And his ending doesn't really open up new possibilities. I like this guy, but it'd be hard for him to return next time at least.

Shujinko
I don't want him, and he basically looks like an MKD only focus point, built around the Kamidogu/Onaga story. But Boon said he was intended to be the next Liu Kang.

Kobra
No way. He was this game's Hsu Hao, an expendable, easy casualty.

Onaga
Bosses do not have a particularly good chancev of returning to the next game. And this guy's no Shao Kahn, that's for sure.

These are just my opinions, going by storyline, endings and in some cases fan's reaction to the character. Feel free to disagree, especially if you think there's something I missed.
For the love of god, I hope Shujinko doesn't take Liu Kang's place. I think Liu Kang should reclaim his main hero status next game due to the now evil Raiden.

Hope Shujinko takes liu kangs place, but for heavens sake, make him better! he has the shitload of potential with a mimic style, but needs separate moves as well. Also, I would rather see him a a strickt, not so kind harted warrior with a good sense for juding right from wrong.

A little Pai Mei but only on looks. His innards (no pun intended) should be more grey as stone. He would rally some of the fighters again raiden after a good fight with him. imagine if there were two teams for the good guys who had to wage war against each other.

HOTARU -improev specials, Ba Shan Fan rocks, best looking male since MK3, what else do you want?

I hope Kobra returns instead of Kira to go against what everyone expects. plus, Kobra has more original moves. if he does return, I hope he gets a different look. more grunge, less Ken

High Probability of Returning:

Scorpion: Too popular to leave out of a game... also, Boon has said he will not create another game without Scorpion as playable.

Sub-Zero: Same as above.

Liu Kang: Sorry, but this game seemed like a rebirth for Liu Kang, and I wouldn't doubt his ending being true. It does not contradict any other endings and follows closely with Ermac's.

Ermac: Arguably the best redesigned classic character who returned. Will most likely play an important role very soon.

Raiden: New direction in his storyline. It's quite obvious they will build upon this in the next game.

-----

High-Mid

Havik: Represents an entire realm... don't see them leaving him out.

Hotaru: Same as Havik. Then again, they left Nitara out of MK:D so we cannot be sure they won't do the same with these two.

Noob Saibot: Too many angles for Noob now... boundless possibilities for interaction with a large number of characters connected to Noob and the Older Sub-Zero.

Kenshi: Well liked character, nothing bad happens to him in any endings.

Jade: Seems like the most likely return character in the Edenian plot.

Ashrah: Fresh new character. Should be used again.

-----

Mid

Bo Rai Cho: Could he possibly make three games in a row? I believe it's possible.

Li Mei: Though not as well liked as Kenshi, she has still developed from her MK:DA days.

Nightwolf: Sadly, he current story doesn't connect him to anyway. His status for the next game is questionable, though I think he has gained many fans.

Sindel: Honestly, she's a queen. I can understand rescuing Kitana, as a mother, but unless Kitana is in danger there's no real reason for her to risk her well being again.

Darrius: Yeah, say what you will, but I still think he can be developed much further with a bit of time and effort.

Dairou: Disappointing, but still good enough. Has an open storyline.

Kabal: I think Kabal's change lessened his overall popularity... then again, either he or Kano will be in MK7 to represent the Black Dragon.

Baraka: I stand beside his ending happening, but that can't promise him a slot in the next game.

Smoke: Not sure about this character. Could be at risk of being forgotten again.

-----

Low

Kira: Nothing more than a filler character, in my eyes.

Kobra: Same as above, though I prefer him more.

Mileena: Something tells me Baraka's ending will happen...

Shujinko: Despite the MK team claiming he is the new hero, I see Raiden's ending happening.

Tanya: Storyline isn't changing at all. Unless the MK7 villian is looking for some way to secretly take Edenia as Shinnok and Onaga did, Tanya won't be back again. Jade's ending should happen for sure.

Onaga: Don't see him coming back at all. Build up for his character was great, but he fell flat on his face like a clumsy goof when it counted the most.

GCN edition characters

Shao Kahn: Very likely to return, I think. Will likely be some form of boss in MK7

Goro: Mid-High. I don't like his whole plot now, but if Kahn does return, it would be a bit stupid if Goro wasn't around with him.

Asrah - minor story line, but has potential of becoming the next God that guides the heroes. Chances of her showing up? 50-75%

Baraka - seems to be expensive decadence of MK Fighters. I'd like to see him back.

Bo Rai Cho - seems to be the new Raiden in terms of being the one offereing guidance to the fighters. Farts and all, he'll be back. I'll bring the clothespins for all of us.

Dariou - do not know enough about him

Darrius - same with Dariou

Ermac - the concensus says he'll (or should it be they'll) be back

Havik - do not know enough about him, but given his looks, he could be one of the upper demons in MK7

Hotaru - a member of the Sub-Zero fan club? Maybe not will be of much use after the Dragon King gets defeated, or the next soul the Dragon King uses

Jade - Yes! A fan favorite.

Kabal - MKD is rotating the return characters from MK2/MK3. I don't see him back for MK7 (Stryker may take this position instead). Plus Kira probably would have killed him.

Kenshi - Yes, he will return. Will Kenshi and Ermac end up rivals since their moves are similar?

Kira - Very ruthless, will get the best of Kabal, I see her going after Kano in MK7.

Kobra - 50/50

Li Mei - the new evil girl in town. I'd say yes.

Mileena - Personal bias says Yes! And please bring Kitana back!

Nightwolf - too much of a loner to be back in MK7, which is sad because he offers a different angle to the game.

Noob Siabot/Smoke - 50/50. This compilation was made only for MKD. Since Cyrax was in MKDA and Smoke in MKD, chances are good that Sektor will be seen in MK7.

Raiden - Yes. Without question he'll be back.

Scorpion - The STAR of Mortal Kombat. There is no MK without Scorpion (although MK got away with it in MK3)

Sindel - I could see her in MK7. Could Sindel become an Elder God(ess)?

Sub-Zero - The other STAR of Mortal Kombat. There is no MK without Sub-Zero (at least a version of)

Tanya - 50/50

Shujinko - don't know enough, haven't beat Konquest yet. (I did get past lesson 2 in the Earthrealm)
