Let's talk about it...

Favorites are....

Dead Woods
Destroyed City
Jinsei Chamber
The Kove
Kuatan (Botan?) Jungle 1
Lin Kuei Temple 2-3
Quan Chi Fortress
Refugee Kamp
Sky Temple

That's a lot considering the fact that I still feel like the music could be better. I think I know why.

Percussion is usually the same shit with some crazy tyko drums or something. Too much guitar is also a problem. When used in interesting ways (or with an actual fucking melody), I found it enjoyable.

I honestly think it comes down to doing too much with the music while not doing enough. Three pieces for three rounds is a great idea(even though Tekken 7's two proved enough), but in order for this to work, you have to change up the musical motifs. Every track can't try to evoke an ominous feel. Every track can't have a heavy metal guitar.

I point to Tekken again (I'm sorry) as a series with incredible music for most of their titles due to the sheer variety of musical styles on display (especially since Tekken 6). I'm not saying MKXI needs to add in drumstep (or maybe it does?) or any other crazy EDM stuff (though I'm a fan). I'm just asking for a bit of variety when it comes to approaching the sound in the next game. Don't be afraid to MK4 it up.

That game had weird keyboard drums and various screams crammed into the best tracks.

I may be incoherent for obvious reasons, but I feel deeply about this and I listen to random MK OSTs as I type this.

I think NRS lost the curauge to make the music like it used to be. And kinda plays it safe to sound more towards what fits the DC universe instead. The old OST's suited the backgrounds and design of the overall game a bit more. Oriental inspired music with drums and such gave it it's own sound. I agree that MKx has not lost it all but if it's there, it's too much on the background and the guitars and (DC like) ambient sounds overwhem it.

I don't think it has anything to do with courage as much as it is that not everyone can be Dan Forden.

Forden was recently on a podcast - Beyond Synth #133 - and he explained that in the classic MK games, he was 100% responsible for all of the music. This, despite the fact that he was a contractor and not a Midway employee at the time. Around the time of MKD, he was brought in an employee in a managerial-type position and was in charge of the musical direction. See, as the games got to be bigger and bigger, an entire team of musicians (a band, if you will) was needed. So he's been writing a lot of the tunes for games like MKD and MK9, but also oversaw other musicians' contributions.

Thanks for the link, ill check out the podcast. I didnt knew about Dan Fordans change in the team. Makes sense as the grow in the studio. Would be nice if Dan has more input in the music department for the future games.

Music in the Mortal Kombat games hasn't been memorable for me since MK4. MK 2011 had great remixes of the original themes, especially the courtyard and Shang's Throne Room. I also rather enjoyed the Garden. Otherwise, nothing about MK soundtracks has really stood out to me since the 1990s. I still love the MK1 and MK2 soundtrack over all, with maybe one or two tracks total from the entire 3d era and a few of the remixes from 2011.

I like MKX music, but the most memorable track for me its the subway from MK3. I love the remakes the song get in the later MKs.
