Two questions about MKXL

1) Is Shinnok automathically unlocked, or do you have to complete the story mode like in MKX to play as him?

2) Since MKX's already installed on my console (PS4), then can I still install MKXL, or do I have to uninstall MKX first?

Shinnok will already be unlocked & the install is separate.

Yeah, Shinnok is unlocked from the get-go.

"Congratulations! You beat Story Mode! You unlocked the guy who's already there! Yeah!"

So Shinnok is already selectable from the start? Wow, lol. In the normal MKX all you had to do was download the Samurai skin pack and he became playable because one of the skins was his.
