Just read about this, WTF...

http://arcadesushi.com/images-from-kanceled-mortal-kombat-kollection-hd-surface/

I know about the project, but didn't know:
1) It was going to be Trilogy, the best collection MK game ever, because somehow Ultimate didn't include Smoke, Baraka & Raiden.
2) They had already done motion capture for it
3) WB immediately after the purchase cancelled the project

Seriously, WB has totally fucked up MK for us...how awesome would that have been, a HD trilogy game!!! I wouldn't need a game for the rest of my life. Original brutalities and all :D

This info and these pics are pretty old. And this doesnt seem like a topic for the MKX section.

Anyway, yeah the game was pretty far into development when it was canned. Several sources said that it wasn't playing well and/or looked awkward. Regardless you gave a decent part of the overall reason for its cancellation. WB didnt want anything potientially competing with MK9, including both this game and the MKHD Fan Remake I was working on with the guys over at TRMK. We got shut down by WB and this game was turned into the MK Kollection for Xbox Live and PSN. The overlords at WB are indeed mighty.

Is there a source for Warner Bros cancelling it? I doubt that information would have been given out, but it's possible I guess. Sucks either way, would have loved to see the stages and characters in HD. Hopefully it gets revisited some day, MK:AK was such a huge letdown.

The reason why mk hd collection was cancelled is still a mystery.
Ed Boon said that one day he will reveal why. Perhaps he is on some non-disclosure agreement and is waiting for the end of the embargo.

Ed has wisely kept pretty quiet on the subject. Ive reached out to several of the people that worked on the project and while they were mindful on their NDA's, what I said before was the throughline of all the conversations.

Well, releasing an HD remake of Trilogy, essentially a second version of MK9, is a good enough reason to halt a project. The fans lost with the 3D era might have flocked to this 10$ version instead of trusting a new console version, making you lose a lot of revenue.

If NRS separates from WB they wouldn't be able to work on MK. WB owns the MK ip in its entirety and would only sell it if it was making them zero cash and someone made a HUGE offer. Even then, they still probably wouldn't. WB likes having ips in their stable, even if they're just keeping it on the shelf. WB isn't selling MK just like they aren't going to sell DC.

That said, and even tho I really don't care for all of WB's business practices, I'm glad MK's home is with WB. The games have never been better than they are now and NRS are free to pour as much time and resources into their games as they need to. It really is a great time to be both a MK fan and a fighting game fan.

I think the fans would have more than likely picked it up anyway, MK9 would have sold as well as it did regardless honestly.

I wish i could agree with you about MK never been better. I liked MK9 alot, but cant get in MKx. I don't like the reboot and story direction they took, especially in MKx. I dont care much about graphics.

Idk what deal NRS has made with WB, but you could be right.

Better is certainly a relative term, but in this case I'm referring to gameplay. MK has never been taken as seriously as Street Fighter, KoF, Marvel vs Capcom, Tekken, etc. in terms of gameplay, but thanks to WB's support NRS has changed that. MKX is a sophisticated, diverse and nuanced fighting game that is also surprisingly well balanced.

Sales have also been through the roof, not just for MKX but for the MKX mobile app as well, apparently. In terms of financial success MK has certainly never performed better. And now with NRS catching up to the rest of the fighting game community in terms of online play, MK can finally stand shoulder to shoulder with any other fighting game you want to compare it to.

MKX is certainly not perfect and obviously not everyone's cup of tea, but it's hard to argue that MK has ever been a better videoGAME than it is now.

Good. Aren't you guys tired of that same bull****? confused
We had Mk1, 2 an 3- the original games, we had MK Trilogy, we had the movies telling that story. We had The Journey Begins. We had the comics.

Then, when I thought we couldn't get any more, we had the Shaolin Monks retelling. Then the Legacy series retelling, Then the MK9 retelling.

For God's sake, make it stop!
Move on to the next level already. Give me some 3D era story and characters to main!

Well, it's a bit different when it's an actual remake of the original games in their entirety in HD as opposed to retelling the story. It would be awesome to have seen what they would have been like in HD, I personally would have been ecstatic over something like that. That's why I was so disappointed when the HD project over at TRMK got shut down, it had so much potential. Not to mention that Shaolin Monks, Legacy, and MK9 didn't do a very good job at telling the original stories at all IMO.

Hopefully they'll reconsider down the road if we let them know we're still interested in it.
