Since the first movie came out, the games have canonised the relationship between Johnny and Sonya, or at least Johnny's interest in her.

But what if the movie either hadn't been made, or didn't have any romance between those two? Do you think NRS would have thought of hooking them up themselves, or would they have remained completely unconnected to one another (save as allies of course)?

Without their connection, and prior to MK9, the only change might have been Sonya's exclusion from Johnny's MK:DA ending. It would have had a more significant impact in MK9's story mode, but nothing quite drastic, and it would have only affected Johnny's chapter for the most part. No fight with Sonya, in likelihood. And perhaps there also wouldn't have been that pointless fight between Jax and Johnny in the former's chapter.

The same could be said of Liu Kang and Kitana. Hell, no relationship between those two certainly would have had a greater impact on the story than a lack of one between Johnny and Sonya.

The fact that they were the only heroes along with Raiden to have definitely survived might have nothing to do with their connection, but it wouldn't surprise me if NRS' goal was for their survival to end up bringing them closer to one another.

To conclude, I don't really feel Johnny and Sonya make that great a couple, though I might like it better if Sonya was the one chasing Johnny while the latter either wasn't interested, or was playing hard to get. I have a thing for beautiful or decent-looking women chasing guys.

Well I think they make the perfect couple to be honest. I like the dynamic these two have. Johnny constantly hits on her and she acts like she isn't interested in him, when she really is. It fits both of their characters.

I don't really think that the movie invented the romance between them. At least the way I look at it, in MK 2 Johnny agreed to go to Outworld because he wanted to rescue Sonya, this might just be because their friends but I saw it as something more.

And I remember a few months ago that someone posted some of Tobias' original concept ideas for MK 1, and it hinted at a romance between Liu Kang and Kitana. So I think the the movie just popularized relationships that were already there.

Wasn't the movie based off of the book?

No it couldn't. Tobias planned for Liu and Kitana to pair up since before he actually introduced Kitana. He revealed this in his concept art and notes from the development of MK1, on Twitter.

MK2 doesn't really mention anything about Sonya in Johnny's backstory. He follows Liu Kang to the Outworld tournament to fight for the greater good, and because he'd made a movie about the first tournament that was a hit so he needed material for a sequel script. The official comic elaborated a bit, showing him tagging along specifically because after Shang, Baraka, and co. had slaughtered the Shaolin Temple, they went to America to attack Johnny on set too and the other heroes showed up in time to rescue him.

I think Liu Kang/ Kitana are more of an important couple than Johnny/Sonya, because LK/K relationship actually advances the story. One could even argue that they are somewhat star-crossed lovers. Liu is the defender of Earthrealm and (at the time they meet) Kitana is the stepdaugther of Liu's mortal enemy. Their love actually never comes to fruition and ends sadly.

However, I think the relationship between JC/SB is more to expand on character and comic relief. The relationship is comical because Johnny is cocky and probably used to women swooning over him, but I don't think Sonya is impressed by his antics. It's only after she gets to know him personally that she begins to like him (at least, that was my take).

I don't see how Liu and Kitana's "relationship" is that important. Kahn never sees or gets a hint that Kitana is somewhat falling for an Earthrealm warrior otherwise, things would have gotten a bit more serious when it came to dealing Earthrealm.

Besides, it's not like their "relationship" went anywhere in this story. There was some light flirting, that was it. No, "I really like you Kitana, you're a wonderful, beautiful princess, would you like to be my girlfriend?" None of that occurred. How they portrayed the light flirting was really great... And that's what it really should be like.
