I know she's important to MK3 but how does Kitana freeing her from mind control allow Liu to finish him? He already has the souls of billions of people so it's not like he needed Sindel anymore for his plan. Or did Kung Lao's supposed death allow Liu to have a Super Saiyan moment.

Eh, Shao Kahn doesn't use souls as power. That would be Shang Tsung, right? The thing is Shao Kahn needed Sindel as she was the link to allow him enter the Earthrealm. Also, I bet he was more lonely than the dictator in Team America. But I don't think Sindel free could help anything.

He does actually. He was the one that taught Shang Tsung everything he knows. In MK3 he stole everyone's souls and was at his most powerful because of the billions of souls he absorbed.

Oh yeah, I remember! He also stole Shang Tsung's soul to give it to Sindel. But in MK11 it's explained that he also taught Skarlet Blood Magic, so it seems like he knows many dark arts and doesn't depend only of souls. Anyway, I don't have an answer, maybe the realm merging made him weaker.
