I've just been wondering, with mk9, the new series and the new movie, why the chance wasn't taken to establish a kontinuity for the series that is konsistent across all the different media. So far, the stories have been told differently in every form in which they appear, which can be confusing for some people when trying to sort out half a dozen or more different variations on the same overall story.

Wouldn't it be better to take the opportunity with the new media coming out to also bring forth a konsistent vision across all the different MK media - games, movies, web series, etc.? It just seems like MK overall would be more cohesive that way, rather than the jumbled mass of different interpretations we have now.

Although I think having different interpretations of the story are neat, having one continuity across MK media seems like a better choice when taking the newcomers into consideration.

This is a nice idea but there is no one in hell they can actually do that. Different mediums require different ways to tell a story. You can make a story in a video game as long as you want because the player can stop and go as he pleases. Not so with a movie. They have an hour 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours to tell a story. So when adapting something big they have to find ways to shorten the story which often involves cutting out characters or non essential plot threads. Which isn't exactly a good thing for a game that has 27+ characters.

Not to mention that there are different writers, directors, producers, and actors for the web series, the game and the movie. So getting all these people to agree on one uniform Kontinuity is unrealistic and would be a hell of a thing to regulate.

The Matrix figured out a way to do it.

The game wasn't very good, but the method made sense: Use one medium to tell one part of the story, use another medium to tell another portion of the story.

I'm fairly certain I've seen one or two other properties do the same thing too. I believe Transformers has worked it out such that their current cartoon is in the same universe as the War for Cybertron games, for example. And the '09 Star Trek has a comic that's overseen by the guys who wrote the film and are working on the sequel, so it all lines up as canon.

The only way it can work though is if the person in charge of the property is able to be in charge of every adaptation, so they can make it all fit the same singular vision. MK doesn't have a guy like that.

That's one of the reasons why it can't work. They could conceivably do cross-media continuity but the way they stand now it just isn't going to happen. Even the guy who made Legacy and is directing the new movie doesn't seem interested in keeping continuity with his own work, let alone that of the game.

And the reason why the Matrix and Star Trek were able to do it was because they started as movies that were then expanded upon. Movies, despite all the spectacle and epicness, are usually only small scale stories. They are stories that generally can be told in 2 hours or less and only follow one character's point of view. This leaves a lot of room for expansion with other mediums. With Star Trek they literally had 50 years of stories and concepts to work with, and the Matrix established that the war with machines was wide spread and that other people were fighting too, meaning they could easily make those guys fit in with the established canon.

See this new movie coming out is an adaptation. Meaning they are going to take the story and adapt and change it so it works within a movie's general structure. So it would essentially be impossible to make it canon with the new MK game because there is no way they could fit everything that was in the game's story into the new movie. Even if they just focused on the first tournament. They would have to change something which would throw off the continuity completely.

If they wanted continuity with the games they would have to set the storyline after MK 9 and either focus on Johnny and Sonya training or Shinok's invasion itself. But they aren't going to do that because that's not the story people who are the least bit familiar with Mortal Kombat would be expecting. And that's not the story the fans want told on the big screen, at least not yet.

It sounds good in theory, but I like having different adaptions of MK. I love MK Legacy, it is a great take on the MK universe.

But if there was only one continuity, Legacy probably wouldn't exist.
