MK nothing but gore?

Hello everyone I recently came across a blog seen here

Yeah I know everything is better with links, but I'm still a noob.

But here is the short version of what he says.

"Mortal Kombat is nothing but a poor fighting game that relies only on gore to sell games. And that it should be forgotten along with other ridiculously violent games."

Now I will conceed that gore is what made MK popular but I always saw it as much more than that. I gave a long winded rant defending MK on the blog which I will not repeat but the whole thing got me wondering what you guys thought.

Do you guys just like MK for the gore or do you actually care about other aspects of the series.

I personally think that Mortal Kombat has an atmosphere that surrounds it that other fighting games lack and the most compelling story of any fighting game. I think that most casual gamers miss this and only see the game as gore.

That's certainly been true for most of the 3D games. Ok, all of the 3D games.

MK1 was pretty crappy. MKII was the best MK ever, but still pales in comparison to many other 2D fighters. UMK3 is largely considered the most technically sound MK game and even that is considered a joke by many competitive fighting gamers. MKDA-MKA are among the worst 3D fighting games ever made.
Is MK nothing but gore? Well, that would explain why MKvsDC was largely hated by the community.

Basically he is right.


Basically he hates MK for the gorefest but loves the cheap gore and body horror exploitation of RE. Go figure...


The guy might be right, but biased.

and this is for the best mk game ever. how bad would it be if this game looked crap?

bezou gets it right again, but i have to contend that mk1 is, imo, the best mk, and mk2 is a tad overrated. but thats just me, i know

I like the story and lore of the series. The violence is just the icing on the cake for me. I hate all other fighter games. Their stories and characters were so fucking boring. I do not get the appeal of street fighter AT ALL. There is no interest connection. And I only played Tekken once because it had a kangaroo I could play as.

I agree with this. I enjoy Tekken quite a bit, but still, it's not something I look forward to every time a new one is announced. There's a reason why I've been a fan of Mortal Kombat since I was 7 years old. And no, it wasn't the violence, it were the characters, the backstory. Heck, even the environments tell a story, so even when I didn't understand English at the time, I still enjoyed the 'story' of the game, without actually knowing the story.
It had ninjas, guys who looked like Bruce Lee, and Van Damme. That was what drew me in. Not the blood and gore. That's just something I enjoyed because it was more realistic at the time, than punching a guy, and have him flash a few times.
