UGOs Top 11 Mortal Kombat Characters
The popular Video Game Website UGO has posted a list of their Top 11 Favorite MK Characters. They make some interesting and fun points/analysis regarding their choices and the reasons they chose these 11 MK Legends:
UGO's Top 11 Mortal Kombat Characters
I'm not sure exactly when they posted this, but, judging by the selection of MKvsDC pictures it might be recent (maybe, like I said, I'm not sure). Still, some Mk related stuff is good.
Nice stuff.

I disagree with Sektor, Goro, and Johnny Cage. I'm not a fan of them, but I don't know how you make a top 10 MK character list and not include Liu Kang, Kitana, and Shang Tsung.

About Me
The future seemed so bright.
But this thing turned out so evil,
I don’t know why I’m still surprised.
Even angels have their wicked schemes,
And you take that to new extremes.
But you’ll always be my hero,
Even though you lost your mind...

Sektor? LOL
I also thought its odd to have Mileena but no Kitana.

From the comments on the site, the earliest one is from January 2009, so at least almost a year ago. Still, regardless of the time they posted it, it was interesting to read. Thanks for posting it!

People aren't sick of Scorpion yet? All because he says, "Get over here"?
Scorpion has got to be the most uninteresting character in the entire series.

Yeah he's so uninteresting that he's the most popular and recognizable character in the franchise! Fancy that!
Anyway this list is pretty absurd... No Liu Kang, no Kung Lao? Why Sektor and Noob Saibot? Very strange.

This list makes no sense whatsoever. Who the hell does a top 11? I could see 5, 10, maybe 12. But 11? And no Liu Kang?

No problem.
I just don't understand how we missed this bit of news. It's pretty cool despite it being in Janurary. When was it that MKvsDC was released? It's got some MKvsDC pics/renders.

I don't get why so many are surprised with Sektor. He did very well with his inclusion in the little MK:TE and even better with the way they developed him (so amazngly) in MKA.
As for Mileena, MKD was really the moment she got her shining crown and MKA did her justice with her cool story moment and bio.

More and more, these type of lists are going up to eleven.

Meh, he was in it, for about 30 seconds.
Getting back to the Sektor debate, ever since we heard that he was starting up his own army of robot murderers, we haven't heard a damn thing about him. Not one. They haven't advanced his story at all, and it wasn't interesting when he first appeared in MK3, either. It was effectively just "Another palette-swap robot that wants to kill Sub-Zero. Yawn."
Noob Saibot I can understand making the list after they dropped the bombshell that he was the Sub-Zero from MK1. They've somewhat improved his story and made him a more interesting character overall, at least much better than the cheapshit MKT version of him.

Mileena's on the list. ha in your face Kitana!
of course Scorpion's on top: he's like MK's iconic character same as Sub-zero, Raiden and Liu Kang. but Liu should be on the list instead of Sektor because
1. Liu's pretty much the main character and hero and
2. GOBBLE GOBBLE GOBBLE

Pretty mediorce list. Some choices are questionable and their reasons for picking who they did are just fucking dumb.
Sektor's one of my favorite characters, but he is not one of the top eleven characters ever. And Johnny fucking Cage...but no Kitana, Shang Tsung, or Kung Lao? Lame.
I do agree with leaving off Liu "white bread deus ex machina" Kang, though.

Anyway, I think Shang Tsung (for sure!!), Liu Kang, or Kung Lao would had been better choices than Noob Saibot imo. I understand him becoming a much more evolved and interesting character, but, not sufficiently enough to top those other 2 legends imo.
Nooby is still cool. The whole MK1 Sub-Zero thing was definitely an interesting move.
Cage and Mileena are great on the list and deserve it.

Poor Kung Lao, he never gets the recognition he deserves. His design is sooo recognizable, and that alone (as well as amazing playabilty, specials and fatalities) should have put him on the list.

As important as Liu Kang has been to the series, isn't it reasonable to think that he's such a cliched and redundant figure, he isn't really worthy of a Top 11 list? It's not like Liu Kang really does anything to fundamentally set him apart, aside from winning the first handful of tournaments. I guess dying and coming back was interesting, albeit, a justified in-fiction variation of a problem that the series has -- an inability to let go of their vanilla lead protagonist.
A lot of the characters on the list do well to represent things that are fundamental to the identity of the series. They're interesting characters in their own right, but they also have qualities about them that scream Mortal Kombat. Goro and Shao Kahn kinda go without saying, Sonya has that landmark role as a leading lady, Mileena has more of the MK twist on the idea than Kitana. There's a pretty large grounding to those choices, as well as what they bring as characters themselves.
I would reason that Sektor represents the sci-fi side of Mortal Kombat that's really had a lot of time to sink into the mainstream consciousness that was there for the various versions of MK3, and probably didn't come back after. Not only that, but for those who are aware of the later versions of the character, there's a very fun post-Matrix idea of technology run amok, which is a pretty fun larger concept. It's easily one of the most interesting broad hooks any MK character has, these days.
It's always interesting to get an outside perspective on MK.
It's a pretty interesting list, I'm sure we'd all agree! Not what you'd expect if you were to have MKO users compile it.

Very good points.
While I agree with your statement regarding Liu Kang's absence in the list, you've got to admit that it is still quite weird not to see him in it considering that his character screams 'Mortal Kombat' just as much as Goro and Shao Kahn. While Shao Kahn is obviously more rich as a character, I feel that Goro and Liu Kang are somewhat parallels in the "idea" of "who they are" and "what they've done" in the games. I guess I'm trying to say that Liu Kang could had replaced Goro in the list, but Goro has his (very) iconic design going for him. Still, I agree that Liu Kang's absence isn't really that surprising at all.
I also agree with your views on Mileena and Sonya. They've got tons going on for both of them in the Mk universe.
As for Sektor, I feel you explained it better than anyone else. It is not surprising at all to see his inclusion considering how much he was improved in the last games and how his character transformed to be such a powerful lead threat to the good guys. While Cyrax was the first one to be greatly developed with new twists and ideas, Sektor has a lot more presence because he is a "main character" in his own side of the world. Cyrax, on the other hand, shared a spot with Jax, Kenshi (MKDA), and the OIA plot lead by Sonya.
If Cyrax is to continue in future games, I wonder if they will consider to explore the potential ideas of having him involved with Nitara and the vampires in some way.

No Kitana and Jade? BS. At least Mileena and Sonya are in it.
