Do all moves and combos of a character have a use in general? How much do movelists get narrowed down in competitive play?

I've only played the demo yet, but Scorpion's combo that ends with the fire flip kick he had in the Deception era is useless, right?

Hmmmm. This actually not a bad point. A lot of fighters have combos that all hit high for example. So it would make sense to just learn the one which does most damage and/or one that ends with a launcher.

Kinda wish more characters had combos which mix high/low hits. This also seems to be where Kung Lao has such a big advantage.

You really need to be character specific when asking something like this since it breaks down to specific technical details. Priority, recovery, frame advantage, hit-detection, safety...all of these things contribute to making something "useless". I'm assuming you're talking about combo strings here.

That combo isn't his best option, but I wouldn't consider it totally useless.

What do you use it for? Seems slower than his other basic combos like the front punch, fp, rear punch, and you can't cancel into the spear like you can during that. If they block it, especially after the firekick, isn't it easily punished?

Actually I've seen players use that combo in tournament matches. They would use it after a spear to finish off a combo in which they can no longer do any pop up moves (because they already used them earlier in a combo, their use is limited).

Basically, after a spear they would do a cross-over jumping punch followed with that combo. I think they go for that one because it's his highest damaging preset combo.
