Negative Edge

I'm not sure if I'm late to the party in realizing that MK has negative edge. I was just messing around in practice, and sure enough, it does.

For those who are not familiar with this, below is how it works:

When you press a button, say X (or A for Xbox), the command is recognized immediately. So you can perform Sub-Zero's Ice Ball by inputting Down, Forward, X. Negative edge is when a command is recognized upon releasing the button after it has been held down for a certain period of time. So, with negative edge, you could perform Sub-Zero's Ice Ball by first holding down X, after a few second, press Down, Forward, and then release X--the Ice Ball should come out.

It can be used at times to simplify complex combos, but depending on the character's move set, you may or may not be able to use it. The reason it may not work involves moves with the same directional input as the move you are charging and when you intend on releasing the charge. To test this, you can use Jax as an example:

Jax has the:

Dash Punch - Down, Forward, Triangle (Y for Xbox)
and
Gotcha Grab - Down, Forward, X (A for Xbox)

Both of these moves have the same directional input. So, let's say we want to use negative edge to activate the Dash Punch. We would do this by holding in Triangle--and later pressing Down, Forward, and then releasing Triangle. Now, do either his Ground Pound Close (Down, Back, X) or JP-Pop-Up, Dash forward and press Triangle, Square, and then Dash Punch. It should connect just fine. Now, try the same combo, but using negative edge to trigger the Dash Punch--so Ground Pound, dash, press and hold Triangle, then press Square while still holding Triangle, followed by Down, Forward, and release Triangle. Instead of doing the negative edge Dash Punch, he performed the Gotcha Grab. This is because the final button pressed before negative edge also has a special move with the same directional input. So you will have to test each character and move to see if it can be used in combos.

Wow, I'm looking up at this wall of text....sorry for the long post, I just started typing and didn't notice how long this became--anyway, yeah MK has negative edge, which you may have already known and may not be surprised by it grin

Actually, they might remove it lol. I heard Tom Brady say they're considering it and most likely will because of all the people that hate it.

Interesting. I can imagine people not using it or finding it helpful, but I cannot think of any reason to dislike it. Well, then again, there are people who "hate" Kratos being in the game, even though he's not in story mode and you never have to pick him, so, I guess people can hate things that never have any affect on them.

It makes the timing for certain character's combos a little more difficult. For example: Sonya has a dial a combo that's b2,1,f2 if you input it too fast then you'll get b2,energy ring which is b2,f2. So in order to do it you'll have to delay the f2 but still input it before the window is over. She also has a combo where she has to cancel out of her 2 into her leg grab which is b,f4. It will also carry on after you've just used a normal and try to use a special. Some characters are affected by it a lot more than others though. It's manageable, because you can work around it, but it pisses a lot of people off and some claim they've lost tournaments because of it.

It's truly a useless feature, much like the "flip stance" button. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this game, but man, the button layout is terrible for a stick player like myself and the negative edge does more harm than good.

I hope they remove it.

Actually, certain characters combos are affected by stance--there are situations where a combo is only possible in closed stance, but not in open stance, so the stance switch does have a purpose.

On the Sonya combo example: I wasn't aware that negative edge was causing the move cancels--thanks for sharing, I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

I hear you about the button layout. This game gives your pinkie quite the workout.
If you use the term "spam" I have no time for your argument.

I currently have my buttons set up as much like the old layout during UMK3 days as possible. I have a hori wireless stick and have the following layout. Hopefully this shows up correctly....

1 FL 2 TAG
3 BL 4 THROW (I don't even use this anyway, I just use 1+3 to throw)
