I have seen a lot of confusion and misunderstanding regarding the wake-up game in MK. This is a great vid by Tom explaining some of the finer points. Everybody will learn something new watching this.

That hurt my brain. Can Someone explain it in less than 5,000 sentences?

Which part confused you, the general concept or the sub zero vs Cyrax example? Fuck it, I'll explain both:

1. Wake up attacks in general, like we all know, are character specific special attack inputs that you use after a knockdown to beat out your opponents attacks. Wake ups were believed to be invincible but now apparently it's revealed that it depends on when you input the wake up attack during the "get up" animation. The later the input the less frames of invulnerability you have. That's were the "30 frame example" came into play.

2. To freeze or not to freeze? Given what was established by the first part, Cyrax was frozen on wake up because Tom forced the Cyrax AI to input its wake up attack AFTER the hypothetical 20 frame sweet spot of a perfect invulnerable wake up. Tom did this by switching sides while Cyrax is grounded which forces the AI to have to waste frames "auto facing". Those wasted frames in the "get up " animation guarantees that Cyrax's wake up input is entered after the 20 frame " sweet spot " and = frames without invulnerability. Thus, frozen robo-ninja on wake up.

Any questions? EDIT: Yeah, definitely meant frames and not seconds. Fix'd. I shudder to think what Kung Lao could do with a 20 second wake up attack window.

LOL, Mojo a lot of rounds barely last 20 seconds. That is a hell of a long time to input a wakeup.

It's cool, I understood you wink

(To people that did not: He meant frames, not seconds. 60 frames = 1 second)

So, the lesson of the day is if you don't want your opponent to have a invincible wake up attack, switch sides while he/she is down?

That is one of the things to take away from this yes. Well it increases your chances of them not having one. And you only took 1 sentence. smile

Well the general point that Wake Ups aren't going to be consistently invulnerable for you is pretty significant. As is the fact that the actual "get up" animation can very based upon HOW you were knocked down (Sub Zeros slide, Raiden's throw, and others I'm sure). This means that the timing on a "perfect wake up" can vary based upon how you were knocked down.
