It took a lot of bungling, but Raiden is finally back to his most interesting. The end of MKX’ story mode made the wait for MK11 that much more painful. Interested to see where his savagery leads us from here.

I wish this was the last match both of these characters are my most anticipated for MK11. Raiden is very overdue but I think Kitana is a good winner as well.

TOURNAMENT BATTLE - 2018 CHAMPIONSHIP:
Shang Tsung versus Kitana
#10 Supreme Ranking #6
18 wins 6 losses Record 23 wins 6 losses
Final Battle (2018) Best Result Final Battle (2018)

Much has changed since the last Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion tournament! The future balance of realms remains uncertain, even as the threat of Shinnok is firmly returned to the past, and freshly fallen warriors become one with legend. The legacy of recent history forecasts shifts in power as Outworld prepares for war, Earthrealm grows more aggressive, and Netherrealm adopts new rulers. The fates are as clouded as ever as we ask the eternal question - who reigns supreme?

Shang Tsung: A notorious presence since hosting the Shaolin Tournament as final boss of MK1. Even with time rewritten, the sorcerer's corruption was once again destined to fail to bring about victory for Outworld's conquering Emperor. He participated in invasion of Earthrealm, but was ultimately stripped of the power he acquires from consuming souls. He remained absent throughout MKX, leading many to accept the presumption that he'd perished in MK2011. A fate called into doubt as suggested outcomes tease his potential return, and future conflicts between Outworld and Earthrealm draw nearer. Many believe Shang Tsung will make his triumphant return - but is that enough to make him champion in this year of speculation? His path to the final saw the defeat of: Triborg (R1), Cassie Cage (R2), Tanya (R3), Scorpion (QF), and last year's champion Sub-Zero (SF).

Kitana: Introduced as the rightful heir to an Edenian throne lost when her adoptive father Shao Kahn merged the kingdom with Outworld! She served unwittingly as the Emperor's assassin, but upon learning the truth, joined the forces of Earthrealm in rebellion against Kahn's invasion. It was a decision that cost Kitana her life in the new timeline, leading her soul to be corrupted by Quan Chi, who made her a revenant slave of Shinnok. Her new masters failed in their invasion as well, leaving the spectral princess to take control of the vacant Netherrealm throne at the end of MKX! Her reign as Dark Empress of Hell promises to have a major influence over the future - but will expectations make her champion of this year of speculation? Her path to the final saw the defeat of: Jade (R1), Sareena (R2), Sindel (R3), Sonya Blade (QF), and the threatening thunder god Raiden (SF).

In a year of speculation, we anticipate a future of dark gods, fresh hell, and the potential return of the Outworld tournament! This is the final battle of the 2018 Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion tournament! One speaks to an uncertain future, the other a foreboding warning of what's to come! Legendary figures of the original trilogy with the power to control our fate! For the last time this year we ask the eternal question - who reigns supreme? Choose their destiny! FIGHT!

I'm a little disappointed that Raiden's out of the contest, but I'm also glad at the show of support he got.

This time, my vote goes to Shang.

I vote for Shang Tsung. This is the first time two evil characters make a final. I would maybe voted for Kitana in others times, when she was good, but as today, Shang Tsung is one of the best villains in the series.

Most iconic villain in the series, and one of the most iconic martial arts/video game villains of all time .

Up against...

One of the most iconic females no only in MK, but in the fighting genre to a lesser extent. A character whose evolution, for the first time, has taken her places she has never been before.

Shang.

Hands down.

No contest.

IT HAS BEGUN

Tough vote. Both have had their ups and downs over the years, but Kitana has never been stronger. Shang Tsung has me curious about his future, but Kitana is already delivering on becoming something new and interesting. Voted Kitana.

Kitana. Obviously. No question for me. She'll pretty much always get my vote in anything gaming-related.

But Shang Tsung is awesome too and very much deserves his imminent victory.

A pretty solid contest overall.

Kitana is the first female to reach a final, and even though Shang Stung is winning this one, I am so proud of our Princess. Kitana continues to demonstrate why she is the most iconic Mortal Kombat female, and I hope that her role in the next MK game is HUGE.

Shang Tsung has defeated Kitana to become the 2018 Supreme Champion!

Another interesting year for the annual Supreme Mortal Kombat Champion tournament! It was a year pregnant with heavy expectation for what might happen next in the video game series, but despite several years passing since Mortal Kombat X, this year's E3 yielded no new announcements!

There were historic results at the concurrent FIFA World Cup and Wimbledon events, but it was a compelling mixture of new, old, and topical characters voted into the Quarter Finals that had staff calling 2018 the best event yet! Shang Tsung was staff prediction to win as a left-of-centre klassic with growing comeback appeal, but there were surprise eliminations - and uncertain results - right to the finish!

Victims of Mortal Kombat X ranked outside the Top 16 were omitted from the bracket, resulting in major openings in the first round. The topical focus allowed forgotten characters from past eras to get a second shot, and five obscure kombatants to be introduced to the tournament for the first time! This was a forward thinking focus to contrast last year's 25th anniversary, and proved only mildly controversial.

Only 8 of a total 81 characters is ranked where they were before the 2018 tournament!

The biggest improver this year was Kung Jin, slingshotting +12 rankings with an overdue first round win! Difficult draws had kept the Shaolin archer underrated in previous years, but a good second round showing against Kung Lao began a correction. Cassie Cage and Kotal Kahn also made significant gains on their previous ranks, keeping the new generation strong. The Dragon King was up +9 after just his fourth appearance in the tournament, benefiting from speculation about the new timeline, and growing nostalgia for MK Deception.

It wasn't all good news for new additions to Mortal Kombat X: Triborg had the biggest fall this year, plunging -8 ranks after being thrashed in Round 1 by the eventual champion. Takeda was the next most harshly dealt with, falling -7. Ferra/Torr continue to diminish, adding another -6 to their poor showing in 2017.

A staggering fourteen characters achieved new best results in 2018: Shang Tsung, Kitana, Liu Kang, Kotal Kahn, Nightwolf, Rain, Sindel, Tanya, Dragon King, Nitara, Kung Jin, Jarek, Kobra, and Shujinko. Despite moving only +1 rank, Kobra is now six clear from the bottom rung he previously occupied! Debut additions also included: Delia, Kia, Jataaka, Wu Lae, and Ruutuu.

The key positions of the Top 16 saw significant movement this year. After the 2018 tournament, fourteen characters are no longer ranked where they previously were! That includes more than one kombatant to have fallen from the safety of the Top 16! Former champions had a notably rough run, with Fujin, Noob Saibot, Ermac, and Smoke all upset in the first two rounds!

The complete 2017 Supreme Rankings were unlocked at the end of the first round. This year's update will be made available at a similar time next year.

In 2018, many major characters outside the Top 16 were omitted from the bracket! Did one of your favourites miss out? Next year's draw is as uncertain as the future of Mortal Kombat itself! Now is the time to tell us who you want to see make it into next year's draw! Keep posting to make your best case for the dead rising, or share your predictions for next year!

MK Online thanks everyone who voted in daily user polls and spread the word on social media. Special credit goes to those who voiced their thoughts on the forum! The annual tournament is all about recording the opinions of fans as Mortal Kombat goes through its many seasons. We hope to see even more fans this time next year as we continue to plot a course towards the next phase of the series!

Super happy my man Shang Tsung took it this year. Long overdue. Kitana making it to the finals was also pretty hype.

Thank you guys for holding this every year. I think this year it was especially important, considering there was no announcements thus far. Having something to bring everyone together and discuss the fandom despite all the looming tensions about what's going on with MK11 was really a win for the community.

I am satisfied with Shang's victory.

As for next year as long as Mileena, Kotal and all the male ninjas keep making it in I'm good.

Glad that Shang Tsung won, because I'm sick of ninjas eating up the community popularity.

Kung Jin might gain so hope after all.

Feel bad for some of the main characters dropped out in favor for minors no one cares about. Also felt bad for Ferra/Torr. I actually like these two. And shame no one talks about them anymore.
