I just downloaded MK1 for MAME, and I've been playing against a dummy 2 player opponent to try to get a match against Reptile, but it hasn't been working. Can I get to Reptile from a 2 player game, or do I just lack the shadows.

Also, how can I tell when I have pit shadows, and how often do they appear on the Arcade (I'm playing version 5.0, if that's of any help)

No, you can't get to Reptile in a 2-player game, to make the shadows appear you need fight 40 matches or somewhere near that number.

Reptile wont appear in a two player game but in order to fight him your machine/mame must have logged in at least 30 minutes of play time.

Version 3.0 and 4.0 Y Unit is what you need to be playing, and enable "throttle" and hit F10 to speed through, and of course set up a button to enable infinite life for P1 and drain all energy for P2 when you get to the pit with shadows to help you out. It's about 7 or 8 stage rotations, so on the 7th or 8th time you see the Pit, that should be it.
