The Netherealm is a dead realm...its only purpose is to draw in and confine unwanted and/or evil souls. It was a desolate wasteland of fire and brimstone inhabited by grotesque demons. When Shinnok rose to power, he decided to create a physical world, trying his best to emulate the realm he wanted so badly...Earth.
We know that Quan Chi is from the Netherealm and we also know that he is a powerful free roaming sorceror (he can travel to various realms undetected by there Gods).
How is it that Quan could escaped the netherealm in MKM:SZ, and contracted Sub to get the amulet, but needed Tanya's help in MK4 to get free?

I'm not 100% sure on that one, but I think Quan Chi himself could get out of the Netherrealm. Tanya's help was needed to get Shinnok out of that realm, as he did not have Quan Chi's free roaming abilities.
Right, Tanya only helped Shinnok and his army. Quan Chi was able to come and go as he pleased.
Which brings up one of the biggest plot holes in the MK mythos. Quan Chi's status as a "free roaming sorcerer" is well documented. Yet after MK4 he is sent to Netherrealm and according to the MKDA story is unable to leave until he uses the amulet. Did he just forget how to teleport form realm to realm? Very sloppy writing by Vogel.

It was also said that he and Scorpion went to the 5th plane of the Netherrealm together, and that there, Quan Chi's power waned while Scorpion's increased. He probably had lost the ability to cross realms by the time he tried.

Very Good!! I hadn't even thought of that. Quan and Scorp get teleported in to the middle of no where (within the Netherealm) and quan can't get to a portal or doesn't have the time to concentrate to travese the realms and escape because of scorp. after a period of time quan loses the ability to escape the realm along with a host of other magikal abilities.
Thanks for the imput, it helped out a lot.
