and then there were 7 (ninjas)
Hey, I just thought I'd do a thread where you rank your favorite male Ninjas, based on a combination of story, abilities, relevance to the game, and some personal points. This is what I came up with:
01.Sub-Zero:
Other than Mortal Kombat:Special Forces, there has been a blue ninja with freezing power in every game. Sub-Zero's story is always among the most intriguing, as it's usually two or three fold. He's usually involved in storylines with two or more characters simultaneously. In addition to this, he's always been a strong fighter (I can't think up a formal MK game where he wasn't in the top tier.)
02.Scorpion:
Another one of the truly classic characters. Scorpion was one of the only two Ninjas in the first game, and is not only the ghost of Hanzo (what's his last name?) but also basically the remnant of a destroyed clan. His spear with the "Get Over Here" catch phrase might be the most well known in all video games. Scorpion wasn't always top tier, but he was usually a strong mid-tier character, and a great character for beginning players.
03.Reptile
Reptile is one of very throw away characters that broke away from that mold to become one of the most popular characters in MK history. Originally an after thought in Mortal Kombat 1, he developed as a character through out the games. Whether he was weak (MK2) or strong (UMK3) His move set was always unique.
04.Noob Saibot
The demon Noob Saibot is appropriately enough, ranked in the middle of the ninja category. originally just a jet black Scorpion,
Noob developed into the character that would introduce a whole new dimension to Mortal Kombat: The Netherealm. An extremely strong fighter in Mortal Kombat Trilogy (and apparently in the story, as the murderer of Goro,) Noob has great potential for the next MK game.
05. Ermac
Probably the most mythologized ninja of all, Ermac finally sprung up in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. although his move set is basically rehashed Ninja moves (a fire ball and a teleport) his telekinetic abilities show a lot of potential for MK6.
06.Rain
Rain is the one ninja I truly believe we'll never see again. Stuck in the UMK3 opening screen to start rumors, Rain was stuck in Mortal Kombat Trilogy, as one of the games only new characters. Rain had a decent story, and was very powerful. but he was an extremely unbalanced character. I'd also venture to say, being decked out in purple/pink didn't endear him to the mostly male MK crowd, and he seems to be the least popular MK Ninja.
07.Smoke
I love this character to death. I love his story, I love his look. I love the mystique about him. But when it comes down to it, he has always been a scorpion rip off in his human form. Hopefully in MKD, he will finally get his own moves.

Yea, and MK2.

And Mk4.
He was only Top Tier in Mk3.
Anyway, AWESOME thread. I dont like ninjas at all but I do like this thread.
I will say ERMAC is by far the best of all. I love his story, very original, I also like the way he was created.
From a "rumor" to reality!!!

More like, "...and there were 7 pallete swaps".

I disagree. Sub-Zero is one of the best characters in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. And one thing to note; with the exception of Mortal Kombat 1, he always was better than scorpion.

Hmm, my first would be tied between Ermac and Smoke for their deadliness in UMK3/MKT. I do enjoy playing as them a lot.
Scorpion is close behind Smoke for me because he is basically a slightly less powerful version of Smoke.
So that would leave Reptile to be fourth in my book because even in MK2 when he kinda sucked I enjoyed playing as him, I just had a lot of fun with him. The same goes for UMK3. His dash move plus the variable speed force balls just made him entertaining.
Sub Zero was always a problem for me because I never really enjoyed playing as him, so I'd rank him after Reptile.
Rain, was kinda cool but kinda weak at the same time. I thought he was a cheap add on that was a little too broken and always seemed rushed and unfinished.
Noob, I just plain dislike. Why bother balancing the other characters if you are just going to put one in thats prebroken for ease of use.

CorrezZ Wrote: Wrong, Scorp is better in both MK4 and MKDA (in which he is god-tier). Sub in MKDA just doesn't have the moves or strength needed to compete with Scorp, Bo or Sonya. |
Scorpion is rather meh in MK 4. He is a top tier in MKDA, but then again I also consider Sub-Zero to be strong in MKDA.
By the way guys, part of this list IS storyline. I would have ranked Noob Saibot number 1 if it was all about power.

Rain was not a new character in MKT, he was in the SNES and SegaG versions of UMK3, and he was a lot more powerful than the trilogy version I might add.
As for Sub-Zero, he was really good in MK1, MK3, and MKM (I can't think of a more powerful playable character in that game

Wrong. Sub-Zero is mid tier in MDKA; not close top being the best.
Low tier in Mk1 and Mk2.
In Mk3 he was the best, but only in that game.

In MK1 he was not low tier, though there was no huge difference between the characters.

The SNES and Genesis versions of UMK3 were launched Simultaneously with the home versions of MK Trilogy. I don't really consider that a previous appearance.

Sorry, I don't buy it.

1. Scorpion: Pretty much the icon of MK and the most popular character, Scorpion I believe would beat any ninja he came across with. Plus, being Boon's favorite character, that is what makes Scorpion the most powerful, like it or not.
2. Sub-Zero: Obviously. I don't know, there isn't anyting in any of the games that excites me about Sub-Zero. I think half of his popularity is because he is blue. I bet if Sub-Zero was white or any other color he wouldn't be so popular because blue is like the most popular color.
3. Reptile: I think the most exciting hand to hand fighting ninja is Reptile. Doesn't have many nice powers like Sub or Scorp(his acid spit is so slowww), but he's got those lizard reflexes that just make you keep wanting more. And as these MK games keep getting better gamepay, he is going to get more popular.
The rest of the ninjas can die for all I care.

Originally there were 12 different ninjas if you count the other Sub-Zero as a seperate fighter, and the CD MKT ninja Chameleon, and the three cyborgs. That's only if you want to get technical. But, here is how I'd rank them all, and why:
1. Unmasked Sub-Zero=I believe he is the most
powerful fighter in MK3-MKT. He was the very
first fighter I beat the games on, set on the
hardest difficulty.
2. Masked Sub-Zero=Same as the other Sub-Zero.
In UMK3/MKT after learning his 100% hit combo
which can be done even in UMK3 arcade, he was
the second fighter I beat the hardest level of
the game. 2HP(D + LP)(D + HP) time in a jump
in LP right before the opponent hits the ground
and immidiately go into the same combo. It is
hard to do on everyone, but possible. The
robot ninjas were the easiest to perform it on.
3. Tie of Human Smoke & Scorpion=Basically they
were the same with Smoke having better combos
in my opion, including a 100% hit combo.
LK(D + LP)(D + HP)walk in standing HP, Spear,
then repeat combo. Of course every once in a
while the CPU would break out of this combo.
4. Ermac=Since he had the same basic lure attack
that can be done to the CPU by jumping back
with a kick to have them throw a projectile,
then do a Fireport Punch as I call it, then run
in with a combo, like Scorpion, or Human Smoke,
I'd rank him next.
5. Rain=Even though in my opinion in Trilogy, Rain
is the strongest, I'd rank him 5th. His tricky
combo for 100% too can be done. Lightning Slam
(B + HK), Standing HP, (B + HK) well we get the
picture, but he still had one major flaw, that
darned orb. Great move, but cheap, and cheap
says to me he's weak.
6. Noob Saibot=Same with Rain, cheap means weak to
me. His Disabler is great for beginers to do.
His 100% combo is also pretty easy to pull off.
2HP, LP, HK then jump in with a timed LP then
redo combo, and repeat. Still, he's too cheap.
One major flaw even when the CPU uses him.
Jump back and have the CPU throw the Disabler
and hit you. Do it again, and he'll use it
again effecting himself. Sad isn't it?
7. Reptile=Don't get me wrong, I like Reptile. I
liked him more as a ninja than anything, but,
he was never strong enough to win on his own.
He was always the last fighter I beat the game
with. He is too complex to learn how to use.
But in UMK3 if you throw two Forceballs, the
CPU falls for it every time. Even as Jade.
8. Chameleon=Why list Chameleon? Well, he is a
ninja based on MKT for the CD Platforms. Yet
you have no control over any of his moves. It
randomlly happens, that is why I place him in
the bottom.
9. Robot Smoke=More powerful than Cyrax, or Sektor
Tricking the CPU into throwing a projectile
while I do a Teleport Punch, then a spear, and
a combo, the CPU was no match for me then. Yet
as a robot, like Cyrax, and Sektor, he could
be caught easily in any 100% Damage combo that
anyone could throw off.
10. Cyrax=Cyrax has that cool net, and that is why
I placed him before the known last one.
11. Sektor=Very weak of the three cyborgs. His
missiles are okay, but only effective in combo
Doing the Robot Smoke trick, will win a game
though, I'll give him that.
